Been busy here too...have started working on another line though. Looking for info on Noah Bernhardt (Barnhardt/Barnhart?) and his wife Leah Loretta Stirewalt Bernhardt....my gggrandparents. They may have been orginally from Cabarrus County..were in Rowan when their children were young because my ggrandmother went to Rowan County schools. They were probably born circa 1870 or before. I'm here, just busy, but I can say that I'm a descendant of Col. Jonathan HUNT and have BOONE, BRAZELTON, BRYAN and MERRILL cousins. Has anyone seen ANY reference at all to a William METCALF in Rowan County between 1760 and 1780??? Dave ddstrain@aol.com listowner STRAIN-L STARKEY-L BRAZELTON-L
Certainly pray nothing is wrong in Rowan County or with the people who have been putting all our queries together. When the "Roll is Called Over There", wish to have my WHITAKER family continued to be on the list. Will send a query when I can get everything in order. Rowan, we miss you. Hi Richard, Tony and Everyone, This list has been extremely quiet lately, I agree. Think probably it's just that time of year? Anyway, maybe the Listowner should call for a Roll Call?<g> Marsha McWilliams Illinois -----Original Message----- From: Anthony Mayberry [mailto:tonymayb@bellsouth.net] Sent: Thursday, October 28, 1999 8:22 PM To: ROWANROOTS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: What's happening? A couple years ago I was where you are now. Chin up, it gets a little easier every time you do a search someplace. Aside from older family members' memory and possibly a family bible, I'd suggest you go to the Rowan County courthouse and the genealogical library in Salisbury and run searches on births, deaths, cemeteries, tax lists, and census lists (began in 1790). If you know your family's religious affiliation, many churches maintain old records of members. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a web page that has a fantastic collection of genealogy information. There are a jillion sites on the internet to search and surname lists are quite prevalent. You just have to pull up a chair and dig in. You might even find someone who has already done a lot of research on your family name and just waiting for someone out there to contact them with the same interest. It has happened! Check web pages that might show your names, leading you to new sources. This Rowan Roots page is very good, especially if your ancestors came from there. I've been keeping in touch with it, although my main interests have been in Davidson County, right next door. But Davidson was formed out of old Rowan [as well as many other counties], so in order to find out if you might need to go to some of these other counties, why not check in with the NC genealogical page and search all counties at one time for the surname(s) you're interested in? If you know how the people got to NC (example: many came to the Yadkin River valley in Rowan County down the Old Wagon Trail that began up in the Lancaster County area of PA), you might want to work back to the known source area and the states they went through. Some dropped off along the way and some of these came on down later. Happy hunting, Bert Simerson

Greetings to the list. My name is Ray C. Robley Jr. and I was born in Tunica, MS in 1924, the son of Ray C. Robley (born in Tunica County, MS in 1890 and died in Annapolis, MD in 1965). He was the son of William Q. Robley (born in Hardeman County, TN in 1843 and died in Tunica, MS in 1900). William Q. Robley was the son of Thomas Abner Robley (born Rowan County, N.C. in 1800 and died in Hardeman County, TN in 1885). Thomas was the son of John Robley (date and place of birth and parentage unknown and died in Rowan County, N.C. in 1823) John Robley married Elizabeth Ennis of Rowan County in January 1791. John Robley was a deputy sherriff of Rowan County under Sherriff John Brevard in 1780 - 1790. He owned a considerable amount of land where Third Creek joined the South Yadkin River. He and Elizabeth had 7 children - 2 boys and 5 girls. I have located a copy of his will and the report of the committee appointed by the court which restored his wife's dower rights which John had ignored in his bequests. I have been unable to find any record of his birth, any military service, any church affiliation, any record of local parentage or relatives or of his migration into the area or any other information predating 1785. I have made several trips to the State Archives and one to Salisbury's fine library and viewed parts of the McCubbin Collection. I continue to find occasional scraps of information post 1785 dealing with his activities. I have the same problem in finding and following the family of Elizabeth Ennis. As you can see I have reached a dead end on my Robley research. To those of you who have had the patience to follow this far, can you suggest some line of inquiry or some source which I might find some clues to get me started again. I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions any of you might make on learning more about John Robley and his ancestors and descendants. Hopefully, Ray I
