To follow up on the posting by- JC Halbrooks <jcdha@attglobal.net> Let me put first what the 1973 US Census Compendium gives for early censuses and tax lists: (1) 1753-1888,1890-1892,1894-95 Tax lists NCDAH (2) 1758 Tax List JNCG 10:1383 (3) 1759, 1761, 1768, 1784, 1787, 1802-04, 1807, 1874-92 Tax list LDS FHL (4) 1759 Tax list JNCG 13:1883-90 (5) 1772 Petitioners CRONC 9:91-2 (6) 1773? Jackson given as the author listing early residents of North Carolina 1715-1831 arranged by counties. I expect at least a part of this in FamilyTreeMakers CD 310; Census Index : Colonial America 1607-1789. Neither of the these two books is available on film from the LDS Family History Library. If not just for the tax lists, this is good "library search list" to take to the library with you. Another book, "Rowan co. NC Tax lists, 1757-1894", implies there is also a 1757 tax list!!. Ratcliff #44-3403 - 228 pages, hardcover, 1999 (1984) - $20.00 This work lists the names of the taxpayers resident in about half of the North Carolina counties formed before 1786. The names of the taxpayers are listed alphabetically with the county of residence and date, and in some cases additional data is supplied. There are about 28,000 names. North Carolina Taxpayers, 1679-1790, Volume 2 - Clarence E. Ratcliff #44-3404 - 230 pages, hardcover, 1996 - $25.00 This book continues the work begun in North Carolina Taxpayers, 1701-1786 (see the previous book). With the exception of a few lists which were identified as redundant, it includes all the remaining North Carolina tax lists prior to the first federal census of 1790. The two volumes can therefore be used in place of an earlier census to identify individuals in relation to a specific time and place. --------------268139701C24--

But the Wilkes Co., NC tax list that was listed was really for Wilkes Co. GA. It took valuable time away from research looking in the wrong state! Don't know how this type of mistake was made, but it was out there on sites for everyone to see. Sherry
