Berma... I'm sorry that I misread the intent of your remarks. On another list I was once reprimanded rather sharply by another lister who thought I was wasting his time with irrelevant remarks and I guess I'm just gun-shy. I thought that was what you meant. Since I addressed my snippy remarks to you over the entire list I will address my apologies to you over the entire list. I do apologize and I want to express my appreciation to you for calling to my attention what you thought was MY mistake. BTW, I believe my brother's mother-in-law (with roots in NC) was a Stillwell. Is your Stillwell rooted in NC? Again, my apologies. I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida
Is anyone researching Lorentz Schnepp (Lawrence Snapp) of Rowan Co., NC and his descendents? Lorentz and his brother Johannes (and his family) arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Samuel in 1733. By 1736 they were in the Opequon settlement in VA. Johannes remained in VA while Lorentz migrated to NC prior to 1750. He died in 1771 in Rowan Co., NC. He had these children: Johannes (John) b.1738 at Opequon. Not mentioned in his father's will, nothing else known. Lorentz (Lawrence) b. 1739/40 at Opequon. Mentioned in will. Elisabetha never married. Died 1778. Christianna m. Michael Holzhauser Catharina (Catharine) m. 24 June 1762 John George Reel (Riehl) Barbara m. Matthias Barringer Ann Margaret b. 1749 Rowan Co. m. 24 October 1762 Johannes (John) Samuel Rintleman Lorentz's neice (d/o Johannes and Barbara Dutt Schnepp), b. 15 May 1737 at Opequon, also migrated to NC. She married John Lewis Beard (Barth). He was witness to Lorentz Schnepp's will. Also he served as one of the executors to the will of Elisabetha Schnepp (d/o Lorentz). For some reason, in the History of St. John's Lutheran Church, she is identified as the sister of Lorentz of Rowan Co. While she did have a brother named Lorentz he remained in VA. I would like to hear from anyone who may have further information they could share on these family lines. Thanks, Charmaine
Dr. Philip Laugenour wrote a "book" about 1909 entitled Lovelace Genealogy. I have been told it also has data on other Rowan Co. names which were associated with the Lovelaces. Does anyone know where I can obtain a copy? The public libraries in Rowan and Iredell Cos. do not have copies of this publication. If anyone has a copy, I'd be happy to pay copy costs so I could get a copy of the publication. Thanks, Necia Kelly
James Franklin Gaither (b. Dec.12, 1816,NC; d. Dec. 7, 1893, Cannon Co.,TN) married about 1821 Amelia "Melly" Lovelace (b. Dec. 6, 1823, NC; d. Mar. 28, 1864, Cannon Co., TN). I believe they married in NC. Family tradition says Amelia was the daughter of Amos and Tabitha Elizabeth (Tomlinson) Lovelace. Can anyone help with proof of Amelia's parents? She did have a brother Elam and she named a daughter Tabitha Elizabeth. Thanks, Necia Kelly
you sent this to RowanRoots List?? You don't mention that county at all...were they in Rowan Co.NC at some point? Berna Stillwell abner@napanet.net Napa Valley, CA I thought these sites were created to help people with their genealogy. Isn't it possible, considering the migration patterns, that the Irons family dallied at Rowan on their way west? If I knew all the answers I wouldn't have subscribed in the first place. Most of the time I love this genealogy. Cookie, in Florida
I'm trying to find ANYTHING on the Irons family of southeast Missouri. My gr-grandmother was Mary Alice Irons, daughter of John Irons and Eliza Hale. John's father was William Irons and they were in Carruthersville, MO in 1850. Is anyone working on this line or know anything about it? ANYTHING? I love this genealogy! Cookie, in Florida

Brent Holcomb did a book of Rowan Co. marriages in 1981 which gives bondsmen and witnesses. Perhaps that is what you are looking for?

Following up on my previous message: An Abraham HALL married Elizabeth HUMPHREYS in Rowan County in 1816. An Abraham HALL wrote his will in 1835, naming wife Elizabeth, children Sarah Hall, Hannah Standly, Deborah Humphreys, Elizabeth Adams. Grandsons (heirs of Abah Hall): George and Abraham Hall. Same Abraham, in which case Elizabeth Humphreys must be a second wife, since his children were marrying by 1815-1825, or is Elizabeth Humphreys the wife of his son Abah or Abraham? Jim Suit asked: >Looking for information on William Adams who married Elizabeth Hall >on Sept 2, 1819 in Rowan County, NC. > I think he is probably the William Adams from the 1820 Rowan Co. census, Forks of the Yadkin area: 1820 Rowan County census, Forks of the Yadkin 000100 00100 In Davie County in 1850 there are two men named William Adams, both aged 47, in household 190: William F. Adams 47, farmer, b. Davie Co. [i.e. Rowan, since Davie didn't exist until 1837] Mary Adams 24 b. Orange Co. Isaac Adams 1 b. Davie William Adams 47 shoemaker b. Davie William Fry 8, mixed race b. Davie Is one of these your William? Two houses away, in #192, is Elizabeth Adams age 50, b. Davie, living by herself. Is this Elizabeth Hall Adams? Elizabeth appears to have been the daughter of Abraham HALL whose will is dated 1835, probated 1839 Davie Co. Elizabeth Harris state coordinator, NCGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/
WHAT IS A VET? Some veterans bear visible signs of their service: a missing limb, a jagged scar, a certain look in the eye. Others may carry the evidence inside them: a pin holding a bone together, a piece of shrapnel in the leg - or perhaps another sort of inner steel: the soul's ally forged in the refinery of adversity. Except in parades, however, the men and women who have kept America safe wear no badge or emblem. You can't tell a vet just by looking. What is a vet? He is the cop on the beat who spent six months in Saudi Arabia sweating two gallons a day making sure the armored personnel carriers didn't run out of fuel. He is the barroom loudmouth, dumber than five wooden planks, whose overgrown frat-boy behavior is outweighed a hundred times in the cosmic scales by four hours of exquisite bravery near the 38th parallel. She - or he - is the nurse who fought against futility and went to sleep sobbing every night for two solid years in Da Nang. He is the POW who went away one person and came back another - or didn't come back AT ALL. He is the Paris Island, San Diego, or Quantico drill instructor who has never seen combat - but has saved countless lives by turning slouchy, no-account rednecks and gang members into Marines, and teaching them to watch each other's backs. He is the parade - riding Legionnaire who pins on his ribbons and medals with a prosthetic hand. He is the career quartermaster who watches the ribbons and medals pass him by. He is the three anonymous heroes in The Tomb Of The Unknowns, whose presence at the Arlington National Cemetery must forever preserve the memory of all the anonymous heroes whose valor dies unrecognized with them on the battlefield or in the ocean's sunless deep. He is the old guy bagging groceries at the supermarket - palsied now and aggravatingly slow - who helped liberate a Nazi death camp and who wishes all day long that his wife were still alive to hold him when the nightmares come. He is an ordinary and yet an extraordinary human being - a person who offered some of his life's most vital years in the service of his country, and who sacrificed his ambitions so others would not have to sacrifice theirs. He is a soldier and a savior and a sword against the darkness, and he is nothing more than the finest, greatest testimony on behalf of the finest, greatest nation ever known. So remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say Thank You. That's all most people need, and in most cases it will mean more than any medals they could have been awarded or were awarded. Two little words that mean a lot, "THANK YOU". Remember November 11th is Veterans Day
