    1. Re: City directory
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Dear Bobbie, The middle name of Wakefield appears about 8 times in my various family lines, most notably in that of my grandfather, Charles Wakefield Pace, Sr., born 1878 in Salisbury, NC. His father was JOHN FLETCHER PACE (b.1844-1901 in Salisbury), and I have never been able to find an explanation for this middle name of Wakefield. I have deduced that there was no family tie to a Wakefield family but perhaps that the Wakefields were influential in Salisbury in the late 1800s. Or else a Civil War friendship since John Fletcher Pace served in the 57th NC Regiment from Salisbury during the Civil War, but I found no Wakefields in that regiment either. He was held captive at Pt. Lookout MD for a period of time and perhaps he knew a Wakefield there that was his friend. My grandfather was his only child and as eldest son the middle name of Wakefield takes on extra significance in his life. The "Pedigree Resource File" contains the personal family history records submitted through the "Preserve" function of the popular FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service. The important difference between this information and previous compilations is that the information includes the submitter's name and research notes, and no attempt is made to combine submissions from different people. Now I am sending out messages to an individual and it ends up on the list for everyone to read. Oh dear. I apologize again. Nell

    3. Mathias Carpenter was born about 1750-1755 prob in PA. He married Elizabeth Miller in Rowan Cty NC and is found in the Surry Cty 1786 census. They later moved on to Ashe County and lived out their lives. Their daughter, Frances, was b. 1771 and married William Davis. Margaret was b. 1784 and married Jonathan Miller and Jacob was born about 1779. My husband descends from Jacob. I would like to know when Mathis married and who Elizabeth's parents were. I really have only a few dates as years and no actual places for most of these people. Can anyone help? Audrey

Heinrich or Henry FREY, son of Johann Valentin FREY and Anna Barbara BINKLEY, was probably born about 1751-1752 in Lancaster Co. PA, and probably came to NC around 1765 with his parents, grandfather Hans Peter Frey, and other family members. According to my notes, he died in 1802. His wives were 1) Sarah KLEIN (d. 1776) and 2) Elizabeth MORRIS. So far as I know, he did not have a son named James. He did have a son Henry, who was born in 1792. A Henry Fry married Polly Smith 13 Jun 1804. I can't identify this Henry. He's too old to be the son of Henry/Heinrich above. A Henry Frey appears in the 1784, 1796 and 1798 Rowan County tax lists in the area that later became Davidson County. He is the only Henry Frey or Fry listed in Jo White Linn's compilation of the Rowan County tax records, and there is no James Fry or Frey listed at all. These lists go through 1800, so if James wasn't married yet, he might also not be a landowner subject to tax. >James Fry married Margaret Northern on March 2, 1802, in Rowan Co. 3. Dear Anna Marie, There is some information on a Nicholaus Miller family in Dr. John Schlenker's article "Henn Mer Der Wendel Muller G'Funne" (Have We Found Wendel Miller?) in the August 1992 issue of the "Rowan County Register". While the dates do not agree with what you have, it may be of interest. Johan Nicholaus Muller was born Feb 6, 1729 in Dorrenbach, Nassau-Saarbrucken, Germany, the son of Johann Michael Muller, born Mar 6, 1696. This Nicholaus was the brother of the Wendel Muller in Rowan County. Nicholaus married Maria Catharine Waldburn in Berks County, PA Apr 9, 1751. Children born there (Lutheran Church Records) weree Michael (1752), Christina (1753), Catherina Elisabetha (1755), Maria Margaretha (1757) and Christian (1759). Nicholaus is last mentioned in Church records there in 1764. A Nicholaus Miller first appears in Rowan County on 1778 tax list together with Wendel Miller, Michael Miller, and other families having roots in Berks County, PA. No evidence is given, though, associating the NC Nicholas Miller with the one in Berks County, PA. It is interesting, though, that Nicholaus Miller purchased land in Rowan County from Wendel Miller on May 4, 1788.
