    2. I am hoping someone on this list can help me with information on the REDMAN and WILLIAMS families of Rowan and Iredell Counties, NC. 3. Just an update on Brother's Keeper. For any given person in your data base, it will draw a timeline chart showing that person and the ancestors of that person. It can also fill in other events which you would put into a file for that purpose. And, as an experienced user of Brother's Keeper, I can assure you that it is both versatile and user-friendly. don Don Erickson Colorado Springs, CO don_erickson@pcisys.net http://www.pcisys.net/~don_erickson -----Original Message----- From: Bert Simerson <BertSimerson@compuserve.com> To: ROWANROOTS-L@rootsweb.com <ROWANROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Thursday, November 25, 1999 3:52 PM Subject: Time Line Family History---UPDATE < snip> >Hence,I have checked into each reference I was given and can sum everything >up for those who asked for further info: the quick bottom line is that ya' >gotta go to Family Tree Maker, to Genelines [Progeny Software] or to >Brother's Keeper. 1. Time Line Family History---UPDATE
    2. Bert Simerson
    3. First of all, thanks to each of you who responded to my earlier request for info on this subject. I received a couple of notes asking to share the info because they were interested, too, in generating a report that concurrently displayed what was happening in the world at the time a family member was added to the database.......and through their lifetime. Hence,I have checked into each reference I was given and can sum everything up for those who asked for further info: the quick bottom line is that ya' gotta go to Family Tree Maker, to Genelines [Progeny Software] or to Brother's Keeper. They seem to me to become increasingly less versatile and user-friendly from first to last. If you're interested in more details, read on. Family Tree Maker's genealogy program, version 7, has the facility to do what I was asking about. A check with their Tech Service says this facility was present also in versions 5 and 6. For a description, go to their home page <familytreemaker.com/> and you will find a little hyperlink square with the notation, "Buy 7.0; buy upgrade". Clicking on this takes you to the URL <familytreemaker.com/ftmvers.html>. By scrolling down below the table of CD's, etc, there is a "Features Description", which describes what kind of timeline reports can be generated. Scrolling further down will bring you to the heading "Plot Your Family History on US & World Maps", and a further description of what it can do. Also available is a product called "Genelines" described at URL <www.progenysoftware.com>. One person told me their phone number is 1-800-565-0018. They displayed examples of what their program could do. My personal opinion of the examples given was that they are skimpy and somewhat contrived. If interested, you'll have to check for yourself. It was interesting that on the Family Tree Maker homepage, there was a bar with the title: "CD & Software Specials" and, under that, a hyperllink to "Genelines. Try Timelines Software". Clicking on this, brought me back to the same page as immediately above under Progeny Software. I happen to have Family Origins as my genealogy program and it does not have the Time Line facility. I called Tech Service at Family Treemaker and asked if their Time Line, etc., could be purchased separately and used with Family Origins. The answer was "no". Then, since they have a demo version of Family Tree Maker, I asked could I download the demo, transfer my database by GED from Family Origins to Family Tree Maker, use the Time Line stuff to make the report I want, and someway then copy it back to the FO program. Again, the answer was "no". One simply has to have FTM to use and make the report.. Their cheapest version that contains this software is about $30 and, say, $5 for S&H. So, for about $35 one can utilize the desired utility to create a particularly desired sort of report. Naturally, you must print it out while in FTM. I have sent an e-mail to Tech Support at Parsons Technology to find out if they know a way to use the FTM technology, but have no answer yet. Because of the tone of certainty of the FTM technician I talked with, I believe the answer is predictable. But, if different, I'll report back to you all. One writer advised that Brother's Keeper woud do what I asked, but one had to fill in the events and dates themselves. I did not personally check this out because of this deterrent. Once again, thanks again for all the input. Happy hunting, BertSimerson@compuserve.com

    3. Hello again Donna; What a great bunch of names. Will have to go through them probably tomorrow, as am going to my daughters for Thanksgiving. Hope you have a Happy one. Have been getting some ready for you, but not sure what to send. Will enclose the following, to let you know what I am working on at this time. Descendants of Robert Johnston 1 Robert Johnston 1715 - 1757 .. +Lillias Corbett - 1815 ......... 2 John Johnston 1740 - ......... 2 Thomas Johnston 1740 - ......... 2 Martha Johnston 1743 - ......... 2 Sarah Johnston 1743 - ......... 2 Mary Johnston 1743 - ......... 2 Robert Johnston 1745 - 1815 ............. +Mary Stone ......... 2 Phoebe Johnston 1745 - ......... 2 William Johnston 1745 - ......... 2 Ashley Johnston 1748 - ......... 2 Adam Johnston 1748 - This one I am following closely, as I read, in "Carolina Cradle" Robert had settled in the same area of Rowan Co. that Thomas and his family are stated to have been; in Salisbury, NC. Also a Billy Kennedy wrote a book concerning Scotch-Irish in Pennsylvania and Kentucky, and had said This Robert was the father of our Thomas but another researcher said that Kennedys informant of the facts had admitted "he had misinformed Mr. Kennedy.(See letter below) I am quite confused as to our Thomas's actual birth, as some say he was b. 1740-42 and some say 1750. Also, no one is sure of who he married other than it was a Sarah ? b.1755. Some say Greenfield. I have found 2 other marriages of a Thomas married to: 1 an Ann Varner, and 1 married to a Sarah Stapleton, and because they are names Varner and Stapleton which are in our line, they have me wondering. Began to research Michael Johnson, the son of Edward Johnson of Kent. He was hard to find any facts on, just recently found his line, and am studying it. I avidly researched Ashley Johnston's family, as he had a son Thomas b. 1750, but discovered he married someone else. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ >From jjackson@comteck.com Thu Jun 10 19:25:32 1999 To: <echo2@bright.net> Subject: Bill Kenedy's book From: "Jim Jackson" <jjackson@comteck.com> Date: Thu, 10 Jun 1999 18:25:32 -0500 Hi Ellen, Just wanted to add my two cents worth about the enclosed portion of the last email that you sent out. I'm afraid that the information that Mr Kennedy recieved about this group of the Johnsons and there tie with the Pike Co Ky Johnsons is in error. I talked with the individual who gave Mr Kennedy this info and he feels terrible about it now. He admitted to me that he jumped the gun but the book was already in print. Please pass this along to the rest of your group and let them know that it was just an honest mistake by an avid Johnson researcher. Jimmie - ----------------------------------------------------------- Still looking at Robert , as I have found so much in "Annals of Tennessee", and "Carolina Cradle" that sounds possible. But again, I may be wrong. Won't be the first time. Happy Thanksgiving. Ellen Carper, echo2@bright.net
