In some cases the names on the census microfilms had been alphabetized - probably by the census taker. An example of this is page 580 of the 1800 Mecklenburg Co. Census. The following 18 names are listed in this order: Robert COCHRAN, Ephraim COX, Nathaniel DUNBAR, Frederick EZEL, James M. GIBBONS, Francis GIBBONS, John HOUSTON, James HOUSTON, James HENINGER, Thomas LEWIS, Mark LIMMONS, David MOORE, Thomas M. KIBBINS, John MCROSIE, William MCLOY, James McCAUSLIN, Robert PARKS, and John PASTORI. Richard A. Bain dickbain@primeline.com
The alphabetical reports were indexes. These are *not* as reliable as getting your data directly from the microfilm. Hi Thanks to everyone who helped with the answer regarding the location of Abbotts Creek. What a great bunch! I have made a new Barrier discovery in my family and I wondered if anyone might have access to info regarding Wills for Rowan Co? From the below I would presume that Catherine Barrier left a Will. I have found the following: "This indenture made the seventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifteen between Daniel Leatherman Esq and Executor to the last will and testament of Catherine Barrier deceased, relick and widow of Rheadus Barrier deceased of the county of Rowan and state of North Carolina of one part and Henry Grimes of the same county and state aforesaid of the other part. (It goes on but primarily describes the land as being situated on Reedy Creek) Any help would be much appreciated. Stephanie
At the following you will find a map of the Wachovia and adjoining the Broadbay area is Abbots Creek. http://www.sunsetridge.com/leinbach/archives/wachovia.htm Hope this helps. Catherine Leinbach
I am looking for information on Israel Cox/Cocks (b. 1736, d. June 3, 1778 in Rowan Co.) who was married to Mary Quick. They lived in the Cabin Creek area. Any information on parents, children, dates for Mary Quick and burial sites would be appreciated. I have information on one son's line, a Moses Cox. Thank you.

Would the children be considered orphans if the mother was alive but unable to care for them? Nancy Marlin, wife of James, died in 1803, named her granddaughter Eleanor in her will. >> I'm wondering if this connects to my line. If so may help me with dead end. I have a James Marlin who died in early 1800s who had daughter Ann b. 3/27/1787. Ann Marlin married Joshua Repult. Is this same James? If it is, do you have any info on his parents?
Copies of pertinent deeds may be ordered from the Register of Deeds, County Office Building, 402 N. Main Street, Salisbury, N.C. 28144. The fee in 1994 was .50 per page plus large SASE. As to your Miller in Deed Book 4, p. 891. I looked in Jo White Linn's "Abstracts of the Deeds of Rowan County, North Carolina 1753-1785". This book covers the Deed Books 1 through 10. In Deed Book 4 she does not show a page 891. Bk. 4, p. 890 is this: 2 Feb. 1759. McCulloh to George Miller for £25 sterl, 332 3/4 A on E side Abbotts Crk. Robert Jones, Jr., John Frohock, John Hamton, Andrew Hunt. Prvd July court 1762. She shows p. 886,888,890,892, 894 etc. I don't know why some pages are (missing?) or were just not there but that is how she lists them. >From Jo White Linn's "Abstracts Of Wills and Estates Records of Rowan County, North Carolina 1753-1805 and Tax Lists of 1759 and 1778": Will Book C:34. Dallas, All of the 1790 censuses have been alphabetized (and typed). This is what is available on microfilm and in books at most genealogical libraries. I believe the original 1790 censuses are available at the National Archives. Alphabetizing of the 1800 and 1810 Rowan Co. censuses was done at the local level. Adjacent names in most cases have no significance in determining neighbors. Richard A. Bain dickbain@primeline.com
Abbotts Creek rises in the NE corner of Davidson Co. just to the W of High Point and flows SSW skirting the eastern portion of Lexington and then S into the Yadkin River at High Rock Lake at the Davidson-Rowan Co. border. Richard A. Bain dickbain@primeline.com
Beverly, I can help you clarify some of these locations if you are interested. They are in present-day Rowan, Iredell, Yadkin, Surry, Forsyth and poss. Stokes- all in old Rowan. AL Hudson, the Yadkin Co. Map Man
Stephanie, Yes, both Abbotts & Reedy Creek are in Davidson County, NC. However, they are not relatively close. Abbotts Creek (community) is in the Northeastern part of the county (near Forsyth/Guilford area). Reedy Creek is in the Western part of the county west of Lexington. Yes, Abbotts Creek is located in Davidson Co., NC. I can't give you specifics, but looking at the map I have, it begins in the upper right section of Davidson Co. where Davidson joins Forsyth Co., NC, winds its way down toward the middle of the county going by the outskirts of the city of Lexington, and proceeding straight down to the Yadkin River. Reedy Creek of Davidson Co. is in the upper left section. The map also gives a reference to Reedy Creek of Davie Co. & Reedy Creek of Rowan Co. Belinda Rodgers
Charles, Thanks for the information on Vacant Land entries. I had found Mr. Enoch's book and the land entry I was looking for but your added information about the Tax lists is enlightening. I had been looking for a Thomas Blackshare's first land entry for a long time and finally found it. I now wonder how long he had been there before this entry because he first shows up on the 1778 Tax list. . . "Rowan Co., NC Vacant Land Entries 1778-1789 by Richard A. Enochs Jun 19, 1778 - # 915 - Thomas Blackshare enters 350 ac. in Rowan Co. in forks of Yadkin River . . . border on N & W of Wilcoxson's deeded land, S. by William Patterson & Elias Lovelace's claim, on N. by Hunting Creek & Elias Lovelace's Spring Br. being part of Wilcoxson's survey. Now previous entry for 24 Mar 1778 shows #631 William Patterson 640 A on both sides of Hunting Cr, & bounded by Thomas Blacksher, Henry Johnston, John Brandon, Samuel McCollum, James Cal[d]well, James Andrew. So, Thomas Blackshare was already on the land previous to his own entry. Then, 27 May 1779 #2220 - Bazil Gather - 150 A. on Hunting Creek waters & road from main road to Thos. Blackshear. 29 Jan 1780 - #2418 - Thomas Blackshare - 150 A. on waters of Hunting Creek on S. & W. sides of an entry made by Elias Lovelace. By 1784, Thomas Blackshare moved on to Georgia and James Ratledge Sr., newly arrived in the fall of 1785 from Kent Co., DE settled on his land. There is no deed that I've found between these two. Then in 1787, Deed BK 11, James Ratledge rec'd grant #1471 from State of NC, purchasing 340 acres adj. James Taylor, Wm. Patterson and "his own deeded land" on the W.side of Hunting creek. In Oct. of 1786, Deed BK 11 shows that Wm. Patterson, purchased 478 A on both sides of Hunting Cr, adj. James Rutledge (formerly Thos. Blackshares, James Taylor, James Patterson, William Johnston, Henry Johnston, Samuel McCullum, James Caldwell, James Andrews and James Wallace. This Thomas Blackshear remains a mystery to the Blackshear researchers also. I would just like to know why my James Ratledge Sr. sold land in Kent Co., DE in 1784 to Thomas Blackshear jr. who had no known children and then ends up in Rowan Co., NC in 1785 on land that belonged to another Thomas Blackshear. I continue to search for the answers. Happy Holidays All! Pamela Geisler Smith Gresham, OR

Hi Nina Boy I am not laughing a bit. What I've been told is that we have English Grimes and German Grimes all settling in Rowan County. I am researching the German Grimes which seem to have settled on Abbotts Creek but can also be found down around the Old Pilgrim Church. I have hopefully been able to separate them I think mostly on noting the English first names. Most of mine start Johan Charles Grimes (Greim) etc. Good luck Stephanie HISTMOM@aol.com wrote: > > I hope the Graham's are rolling over in their graves ...... if they could > have only known the confusion they caused by using the same names over and > over and over. > Pronounced GRIMES, they are said to have come down from PA between 1747 and > 1800.
