Mr Sears I agree it is a wonderful idea to check and read the virus hoax info. But I know of 3 separate instances where a person has recieved a virus through a virus reported to be a hoax. The listing of hoaxes also explains that the "virus planters" also use these known hoaxes to their advantage due to people relaxing their guard on these. Some of these viruses are also slipping through the virus scans. One woman did scan hers and was told by McAfee that it was ok and now she must use the computer at her office as her home computer is infected. I myself had 2 attempts last night. While these might be judged as hoaxes, they need to tell me why I am receiving mail from a list I am not subscribed to and also why I am receiving mail from myself to myself. I just advocate total and complete awareness of the address and addressee prior to opening anything especially with attachments. Debbie Carter
Virus and Virus hoax issues: I keep seeing virus alerts, information and mis-information being passed around via e-mail. To get RELIABLE virus and virus hoax information visit the sites below. It takes a few minutes to review the information, but it is well worth the time, if it prevents you from losing files or being involved in distributing an e-mail virus. These sites provide CURRENT and RELIABLE information. http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html http://www.mcafee.com/centers/anti-virus/ http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp (McAfee and Symantec produce top quality AntiVirus software) Happy Holidays and Y2K to all of you. Rather than printing out all your data as a backup, why not print it to a file. If you need to later, you can then copy that file to the printer. More importantly, why not save the data to a Gedcom (the generic genealogy file format) file. Once you have empirically (after 1/1/2000) determined that your software is/isn't Y2K compliant and are continuing with it or have replaced it. You can retrieve/import the Gedcom file into most any Genealogy program as necessary. If a software publisher won't respond on the phone to a question, they can hardly be expected to respond via e-mail or FAX since both of those methods lend themselves well to use in a court action. Thanks SO much to those who emailed me about these files. I was born and lived in Kentucky, but now live in California, but I have an LDS history center within walking distance, so I'll be up there as soon as I can. Just another case of not finding answers because I didn't yet know the right question to ask! Thanks again! Joy
I've lurked around this list for months, just because you have shared such good good info . . . now I have a new clue on something I can ask! :-) My ancestors Alexander and Mary McIntosh went from North Carolina to western Kentucky in 1828. I have lots of descendant info, but have NOTHING on Alexander and/or Mary's parents. I've had hints that something could be found in Salisbury. Finally, someone with a tad bit more, tho not much, info: "In NC the McCovings or McCovens or McBbns (??) files in Salisbury has Alexander's family record" and "his father was possiblity a 'Simon', but not sure". Anybody have some further hints on what these files in Salisbury could refer to? If "Simon" is a possible name for Alexander's father, it doesn't seem to fit, because it is never carried on to his descendants. Would love to find help from anybody who is a lot closer to Salisbury than I am--about 3,000 miles . . . Thanks...Joy
Would like to know how I can obtain a copy of an article in the Rowan County Register Vol II; No. 1; The article is entitled JERSEY SETTLEMENT ORIGINS FIRST FAMILY OF JERSEY SETTLEMENT; Ethel Stroupe; pp. 2413-2434; Thank you very much. Darwina Avon NY

Hi I am new on this web site, and i would like to tell you who i am researching. Nancy Greenway was 70 yrs old on the Caldwell Co census for 1850. That would mean her date of birth would be abt 1780. She was listed as from Va. At the time she was living with her daughter Elizabeth Tomlin and her husband Perry, and children. I think "Greenway"was her married name. I would have to locate a marriage record of Perry and Elizabeth to prove it. Elizabeth was born in Burke Co nc abt 1814. Perry was born in Wilkes Co NC. There is a record of a NancyGreenway who married a John Abbott in Botetourt Co Va in 1805, but again i would need her daughters marriage records to confirm it. Does anyone have any ideas on this. Thanks Jim

One of my grandfathers of the late 1700's, early 1800's was a constable in Newberry SC. This job ruined him financially. We don't know how, but during research in court documents of the period for other areas, I have often seen entries concerning posting of security for individuals by different constables. No amount was under 500 dollars and many over 1,000. What was the benefit to the constable to put his money at risk? Was it his money? Very curious. If anyone knows, please explain to us or direct us to a source for answers to these questions. I would like to thank Betty for this information! I didn't know about it. It not only gives you scads of sources, but I have found some hints on where to look for ancestors! The book or microfilm descriptions have information on who and where the people covered by the source are. If you haven't checked it out, you should! Thanks Betty! Hi, Does anyone know the minimum age of a person who could be appointed Constable in 1768 and 1769 in the Rowan Co. of that time period? Also what requirements did they have to meet, such as did they have to own land? Beverly
If you check out the Latter Day Saints Family History Library(LDS FHL) online at : http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchcatalog.asp you will find tons of sources. >Hi >Thanks to everyone who helped with the answer regarding the location of >Abbotts Creek. If I may add also ... the 1790 Caroline Co, MD is also alphabetized. After a few years (and emails) of trying to find the "original" so I could locate neighbors of my ancestors, I was told that for some reason, the census takers originally had done it.
