I'm looking for the parents of Catherine King DeVaughn who was born abt. 1805 in NC, possibly New Hanover County, not sure about that though. She later married J. N. Brown in 1820 and died in 1874 in Butler County, AL. I've been told that there were DeVaughns in Rowan county. I would appreciate any clues that might be offered. Thanks. Carol

I have a book which shows the boundaries for every county at each census year. I checked each map of Tennessee in the book but did not find a Mocasin County in any of them. I also checked The Handy Book for Genealogists. It does not list a Mocasin County for Tennessee either. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
Dear Penny, Have you seen the two most recent issues of the Journal of the Rowan Gen. Society? There are articles/listings of Smith/Schmidt information (too long to type up) and I seem to recall mention of a James Smith, but I don't remember the dates. Perhaps there are lots of Smiths with the first name James in that early period. It seems to me I have read that you can purchase copies of these journals for about $7; check the Society's web site. I always send my replies to the List unless the individual requests personal email replies...and if you want your name off the RowanRoots List, perhaps you should request it in the proper manner, I personally did not and do not have your email address. >PLEASE WRITE TO ROOTS WEB AND TAKE MY EMAIL OFF OF YOUR LIST.

Could this have been a misreading of either Macon or Madison County? Karen, there is a mention of a John Hunter"removed to North Carolina from Little Britain township, Lancaster County"[PA] in the book,"Carolina Cradle".The reference said this was taken from Rowan County Will Books, Clerk's Office,Rowan County Courthouse, Salisbury, NC. Book D,(page or item #?)176.No mention of any Braxton D. Hunter. If you search the will mebbe it would give you a clue.. I also looked your names up in the NC Taxpayers Book 1679-1790,Vol 2.Which is too early for Braxton, no mention of a Charles but it had four Johns: 1) in Orange co, 1779 list; 2) in Gates co, 1789 list; 3) John Jr in Orange co, 1779 list; and 4) John Sr in Orange co. 1779 list.. these are just listings from the tax roll of that county in that year, so I have no idea if the Johns are different individuals or duplicate listings for the same years. I'm not sure whether Orange co.was a part of"ole Rowan" or not.. Hope this helps some.. >Hi I have a descendent born in Mocasin County NC in 1810. >He is the grandson of Charles Hunter Jr. of Rowan County NC >His father was John Hunter of Rowan County and his wife ? I grew up at Abbotts Creek and attended church and we still have our family reunions there. I live about 20 minutes away from it . Abbotts Creek is located in Davidson County, North Carolina The best way to describe its location is between Kernersville, High Point, and Winston Salem. Most of the postal Zip Codes goes to Kernersville. There is a church called Abbotts Creek Baptist Church with a cemetery and a Abbotts Creek Primitive Baptist Church with a cemetery at the present I have transcribed a portion of these cemeteries and hope to have them finished over the holiday season. There use to be a town called Browntown which is now just called Abbotts Creek area. If there is more that you would like to know, feel free to e-mail me. Juanita

Some time ago there was a discussion on this list I think about James Brittain. Shirley Brittain Cawyer published an excellent book about his descendants. I received in the mail today a flyer about her book at a reduced rate. Anyone interested, please Email me. Lots of good stuff about other families of western North Carolina, too.
