One more item regarding Pamela Geisler Smith's post regarding John SMITH: Note: Lydia [Holman]'s children by #1 marriage to Thomas Henry Ratledge: .......2 Emily Ratledge - b. 1829 d. 1878 m. Noah Gaither Emily and Noah's marriage bond is dated 1 Sep 1846, Davie County. I believe Emily didn't die until about 1890. From Jo White Linn's abstracts of Davie County wills, Davie Co. will book II:108, Emily Gaither, 17 Dec. 1889, prb. 3 June 1890. The will names the following children: Thomas H. Gaither, whereabouts unknown Martha Elizabeth, wife of Alvin Dyson Zachariah Taylor Gaither Francis Marion Gaither Mary, wife of Wesley Richardson Sarah Lydia, wife of Milton Ellis. Emily Gaither is head of household in 1860 and 1870, listed in 1860 as a "farmerist" and in 1870 as "farmer/housekeeper". But Sarah Lydia wasn't born until after the 1860 census was taken, maybe not until as late as 1863 since she is listed as age 7 in 1870. She is listed as age 27 at her marriage to Milton Ellis on January 3, 1888. There is an even younger child in Emily's 1870 household, Susey C. Gaither, age 3. Noah does not appear in either of these listings. Where was he? And if he was deceased, who is the father of these children? My apologies to Pamela Geisler Smith. When I wrote my earlier message this morning about John Smith "of Ijames", I had not remembered her followup to Karen Hunter's message. Pamela identifies John Smith and Jane Ijames as the parents of Sarah Smith who married St. Leger Beck. Another link falls into place in my database, and I can therefore supply dates for Sarah: Name: Sarah A. SMITH Birth Date: 6 Jul 1837 Death Date: 2 Nov 1884 Burial Place: Zion Chapel (Hickory Grove) United Methodist, Davie Co. NC Spouse: St. Leger BECK Birth Date: 6 Jul 1835 Death Date: 30 Nov 1910 Marriage Date: 15 Dec 1858 Marriage Place: Davie Co. Karen Hunter asked on ROWANROOTS about Smiths in Rowan County. I've started working through her message and found that it enabled me to link quite a few previously unconnected people in my database. Thank you, Karen! In going through this file, however, I ran into a question that someone may be able to answer: >..... 2 Eliza Smith b: May 06, 1814 d: September 25, 1905 in Center >United Methodist Church Davie County >......... +Simeon Seaford b: October 26, 1814 d: >February 09, 1895 Father: >Mother: m: November 20, 1841 I believe Simeon Seaford's parents were Abraham SEAFORD (originally SEIFERT) and Margaret LENTZ. Abraham Seaford's will was dated 25 Oct 1841, and probated Feb 1842 according to Jo White Linn's book of abstracts. However,an Abraham Seaford age 77, with Margaret age 75, is living in Davie County in 1850 with Solomon Seaford age 38. Was the probate date transcribed incorrectly? Does anyone know exactly when he died? If he did die in 1841 or 1842, then who is the Abraham Seaford in the 1850 census? The abstract of the will includes disposition of the following slaves: His wife Margaret gets Mary son Paul gets Caroline son Solomon gets Bob son Simeon gets Mary and Andy daughter Sophia Peeler gets Rachel Article 965 in Davie County Heritage, by William M. Seaford, identifies Abraham's wife as Margaret Lentz, and says that the name was originally the German SEIFERT. This is consistent with Abraham's reference in his will to a large German Bible. William Seaford says that the first of this family in NC were George Ludwig Seifert and wife Elizabeth, who came to NC in the 1760s from Pennsylvania. The article focuses on Abraham's son Simeon, and does not give Elizabeth Harris state coordinator, NCGenWeb http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncgenweb/
Good morning, Yes, Simeon Seaford (and it was Siefert originally in the German, not Sei..) was the son of Abraham Seaford and Margaret Lentz. Simeon married Eliza Smith as his second wife. Abraham, his father, is the man to whom you refer on the 1850 Davie Co. NC census. He did indeed move with his son Solomon in 1852. They tarried for a bit in Kentucky where Abraham appears on the tax records in Marshall Co. in 1853. It is believed that Abraham died there however no record of his or Margaret's death has yet been found by me. Solomon himself moved on to Scott Co., Mo. And no, the probate date was not incorrectly transcribed. In the words of my mother, Margaret D. Lutes who was the first to research the Siefert families, "In 1841, Abraham Seaford did an astonishing thing. He made his will and registered it while still alive -- an illegal procedure in the State of North Carolina." The Sieferts were indeed from Pa. and prior to that from Odenwald, Germany. Cathy Gowdy
The following website will allow you to sign up for daily genealogy tips like the following: www.tipworld.com go to the Lifestyles & Interests section HATCHED, MATCHED, AND DISPATCHED Here's something to keep in mind when you're doing research on burial records. Although your ancestors might not have been religious, they may have attended church at least three times in their life: to be hatched, matched, and dispatched! If, when looking for a burial site, you can't find the correct cemetery, or if you believe the tombstone has been destroyed or removed, search the records of the nearest church. Although you might think that people didn't travel far in the middle 1800's, they often traveled as much as five to eight hours by buggy to attend the nearest church of their chosen denomination. Ignore the county lines and draw a 30-mile circle around the area in which your ancestors lived. Check local directories for that time period, locate the churches within the area, and then locate their records. You might be surprised at what you find! FINDING OLD, ABANDONED CEMETERIES When dealing with cemetery records, people often ask, "How can I find old, abandoned cemeteries if no one takes care of them and they're out in the woods somewhere or forgotten?" You might think those cemeteries are forgotten, but they're not. Property laws required landowners to disclose whether there were burials or burial grounds on property when the property was sold. Usually, those burial grounds are recorded on plat maps. If they're not, check older plat maps, such as those from the 1880's. These maps might pinpoint cemeteries that have somehow disappeared from the more current plat maps. Be certain to check them. You can usually find plat maps in public libraries. They are provided by : Diana J. Muir, Professional Genealogist Former Host of the World GenWeb Teacher of 8 free online genealogy classes at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~genclass/ I have saved the ones from the past couple of months in a Word document if anyone is interested. Does anyone recognize Sara Sophia Kimball or John Elam McEwen as one of theirs. John Elam McEwen's mother Rachel Proxelena Morrison's mom was Polly Stevenson, one of mine's siblings. I would appreciate more information on this line. Mary
Many county webpages have a hyperlink to local cemeteries. Might be worth a check for Rowan/Davidson.
These families appear to have migrated from PA/or Shenandoah Valley, VA into Rowan/Davie/Iredell Cos, NC ca 1750s with some going on to Gaston Co by 1800. Seeking all sightings (deeds, marriages, wills, stones) for these families before 1820 in Rowan/Davie/Iredell Cos. Thanks, Hal McCawley in CA
