For those Rowan Co. (and other places) researchers who are near LDS family history centers, an excellent resource for your research are the films held by the Family History Library at Salt Lake City. These films can generally be borrowed through the LDS FHC for a small fee. The listed books cannot be borrowed, but occasionally an author will permit his publication to be filmed. Perhaps the book can be borrowed through your public library on interlibrary loan. Not always, as genealogical books seldom circulate, with some exceptions. Back to the FHC and FHL holdings. Use the website www.familysearch.org. Look for a tab which says Custom Search. This brings up a list of items, but look for Family History Library Catalog. Click on Place when the opportunity comes up on your screen. Type in Rowan and then North Carolina. A blue lined link will eventually come up. Click on that. Now you are on your own. Marriages are not listed under marriage but under Vital Records. The library has 300 reels of Rowan Co. deeds alone. Save your eyesight. Good luck in finding an LDS FHC near you. Telephone for hours and days when it is open. They are run by volunteers--not paid staff. Many are NOT genealogists so don't expect great revelations. Do LOTS of homework. Hi, Have any of you Dedmon/Deadman researchers ran across a connection to the Malicoat(Mallicoat) family of VA and Tn. My ggg grandfather was Dedmon(Deadman) Malicoat born around 1778 in VA. He moved to TN before 1809. His mother is only know by her first name Ellender. Could she be a Dedmon? I had talked to a Malicoat researchers several years ago that thought that the Dedmon was Indian not French. I apologize if I miss any discussions pertaining to the Dedmon name. Jo Ann and Interested Dedmon/Deadman Researchers One point to remember when researching the name "Polly". Polly is usually a nickname for Mary. In my data I have Polly Lincoln Dedmon and her husband, Thomas Dedman (Deadman) IV, moving from Burke County (now Mitchell County) North Carolina to Walker County, Georgia in 1846. William and Margaret Dedmond went with them. Mark Dedmon was the bondsman at the wedding of Thomas Dedmon and Polly Linkhorn. Polly Linkhorn's given name was Mary. In the beginning, the name was spelled "Deadman". It changed a lot from Census takers getting it wrong and some Deadmans changed the spelling so that their mail wouldn't get confused with all the other Deadmans. So many of them had the same first, traditional names. My Deadmans finally became Deadmonds when they migrated to Illinois. I and several others, are trying to find anything about the following family members. William Roberts Sr. b. 1714 in Anne Arundel county Maryland m. Elinor Mayhan/Mahon in Baltimore in 1735. They moved to what was then Rowan county NC. abt. 1741? took up residence, and raised a large family, eleven children? My GGGGrandfather Shadrack Roberts b. 1753, Rowan County, I believe, was one of these children. Is there someone Who has knowledge of this family ? Who could help me establish the family members of William and Elinor and definitely establish the link to Shadrack. Or at least direct me to on line records that will help me. Sincerely, Roy "Buck"Roberts
Looking for information on the marriage of John BUTLER to Jessie KNOX in Rowan Co about 1783. Are there any books or indexes on this time period ? Thank you for any help offered. - Maryanne Butler Walsh
There is something on the Deadmon/Dedmon family in the "Heritage Book of Rowan Co." It was published by the Genealogy Society of Rowan Co., NC. It came out sometime in the early 1990's I think. I no longer have it and got a look by ordering it through inter-library loan at my local library. I am sorry that I have no further information, but I do remember what caught my interest--one of the Deadmon ancestors was an Indian lady. Hello list, I forgot to ask if anyone has access to bastardy bonds as I need to find out if there was one on Jacob Wolf in Rowan or Rutherford County? Thank you, Melanie Malone
Lois, Polly Dedmon my 4xgreatgrandmother would be very proud that people are trying to solve the mystery of who the father of her son Jacob Wolf was. I do appreciate so much and I know there is an answer somewhere. I have Jacob Wolf as being born 11-1-1798 from cemetery of Beulah Methodist Church in Cleveland, which is different from pension app filed by Polly Dedmon's mother. Whatever age she was when she gave birth she couldn't have been more than 12 or 13. Does anyone know if there was any history of Indian attack on this family in Rowan County? The most sensible answer that is being debated, is a Jacob Wolf born the same year as she was in 1786 and that would be quite possible of two young kids getting intimate at age 12 or so. Thank you everyone, Melanie Malone
Sandra, I don't recall the name Pickelsimer but I have only been researching since Nov when we purchased the computer, but Rev. Leroy Dedmon who is an expert in Dedmon Genealogy may be able to help you. His Email address is minister@mindspring.com. I can't think of his web pages URL at present, a brain block I guess!! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with. Take Care, Melanie Malone

I need to change my address and at the same time change from the regular list to the digest form. Am I correct that I just unsubscribe from the regular list I belong to now and then request subscribe to the digest form at my new address? Do I simply replace the "L" with a "D"? Thanks, Bedrt Simerson
Billy, Thanks for the information. I am not the one who requested the information, but I am a Deadmond descendent. My information gives the birthdate of Hannah Dedmon's grandson, Jacob Wolf, as Dec. 26, 1794. Your information gave the date as 1791. Whenever Jacob Wolf was born, his mother, Polly, would have been extremely young, in fact, she would have been a child. 9 years old, or younger. We know that by the time Polly was 21, that she was married to a man name Procter. We think that Polly was probably not married to Jacob Wolf's father, whose name appears only as "Mr. Wolf". Maybe, because she was so very young, that the circumstances surrounding the birth of this child were rather unfortunate. In those days, children born out of wed lock would take the name of the father if he was know. Even today, that occurs. We would love to know more about Jacob Wolf's father. It does appear that Jacob eventually married a Nancy McEntire. We also know that his birth place was Rutherford County, North Carolina. Polly Dedmon and her family originated in Rowan County. Any information about "Mr Wolf" would be appreciated. I am trying to locate my g-g-grandfather Francis Marion Cunningham who married my g-g-grandmother Margaret Gaither 6/17/1855 in Davie County, NC. Margaret Gaither lived in Rowan County, the daughter of Isam Gaither. I know Francis went by his middle name Marion because he is referred to some family records by his middle name. Francis Asberry Cheshire posted the wedding bond. C. Harbin was their witness. My g-grandmother Mary Jane Cunningham was born in 1859 in Rowan County. In 1861, her sister Clementine was born, listing Franklin Thomas Cunningham as the father. I can only assume Francis Marion was killed or died sometime between 1859 and 1861. Margaret's little sister Nancy married a Rubin Cunningham 12/20/1863. I have been unable to trace these Cunningham branches so far. . I am assuming they must be related some how. If anyone could send me in the right direction I would appreciate it greatly. Thank You Carina Gilson Slack

That's real close, but there are ocassional exceptions. For instance, the estate of an incompetent is probated during his or her lifetime. A probate case is a gold mine for a genealogist. You will find orders authorizing sales of land, affidavits of heirship, etc. Each one is different and can disclose all sorts of things about a family.
