PHILLIP SECHRIST born about 1790 in Rowan county NC and died about 1863 in Morgan county IN., married MARY"POLLY" SULLIVAN 6-10-1815 in Rowan county NC.Mary Sullivan was born 1797 and died before 1874. The couple migrated to Morgan county IN about 1840 and they had the following children: 1.CALVIN born 2-21-1822 died 1-28-1881, Calvin married NANCY KATHRYN VARNER 8-14-1842 in Davidson county NC 2. DAVID born 1824 3. WILLIAM ALEXANDER born about 1830 married FRANKY WARTHEN 8-26-1850 in Morgan county IN 4.LINDSAY born about 1832 5. ELENDER born about 1835 6. I would like to have any info regarding this line, any help would be most appreciated. Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net

In Brent Holcomb's "Marriages of Rowan County, North Carolina 1753-1868", p. 87 he has a marriage: "Coughenhoven, John & Mary Freese, 8 July 1794; William Smether, bondsman; J. Troy, D.C., wit." Does anyone know about this couple? Is the name Coughenhoven or Coughneour or Coughenhour? I would appreciate it if anyone knows anything about them if they would let me know. Does anyone know if they are on the 1800 Rowan County, NC census? Thank you so VERY much. I appreciate your time and effort...Jo
Would greatly appreciate any information about John Hunter (b. abt 1735 in VA??), who married Rachel Coleman (abt 1760). I've found a will, dated 29 Jan 1803, but that's about it. Was wondering if he is the same John Hunter from Albemarle Co., VA, who purchased property in Rowan Co. from Robert Jones, Jr., in 1758. Or perhaps is related to the Augusta, VA, Hunters (doubtful)? Any details on him, particularly birth information, parents, and siblings, would really help. Thanks all, Joel Hunter Lexington, KY

Just added a couple of surnames to my list of names I am researching in Old Rowan county. Henry Stevens and his wife Nancy Foster (Forster). Nancy's first husband was named James Barnes, by whom she had several children. Henry was a Revolutionary war veteran. The settled on a farm 6 miles south of Asheville, Buncombe co., on the site now occupied by the Six Associates Architect building. Anybody doing these lines? Let me know. Thanks Bob Evans
Greetings list, I am back on the list after a long absence and am hoping you guys will be "my lifeline" and provide some clues to aid me in the so far fruitless search for my Hughes line. John HUGHES listed below is said to be born in Rowan County, NC. - Rev. War Pension Abstracts; John Hughes, s1536, North Carolina Line. Also served in St. Clair's defeat. Applied 9-05-1832, McMinn County, Tennessee, age 80. He lived in Burke County, North Carolina at enlistment and later moved to Blount County, Tennessee, then to McMinn County, Tennessee. Rachel BLEVINS was a witness. I thought he might be connected to my James Hughes as both he and John are shown on the 1830 McMinn Co. Census. My James Hughes has a son Caleb Starr Hughes who I thought was possibly named for Caleb STARR, a man of note among the Cherokee. Also his son Meredith Childers/Childress Hughes had a large contingent of Indians come to visit him in Clay County, Kentucky after he moved there. Notice that the first few children were born in South Carolina and James' wife was born in Georgia. Later, his son says in a census record that his father (James) was born in N.C. and there have been hints that it was Rowan County. Anyone have any ideas on this? After 20 years of research, I am at a dead-end. I am so tired of being kept awake at night trying to figure this out. Please help if you can. My line: James and Margaret HUGHES. Believe he or Margaret are Cherokee connected. They left McMinn County, Tennessee in 1835 for Kentucky (they are shown on the 1830 McMinn Census). 1. Would any one know where one might find a copy of the above book by William Lee Grissom? Have tried several genealogical lending libraries and also a couple of rare and out of pring book stores. Jerry
In April 2000 the University of North Carolina Press will publish a book entitled "The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: Western North Carolina in the Civil War," by John C. Inscoe and Gordon B. McKinney (both professors of history). Advance notice says that the book is 480 pages, and costs $39.95 (cloth). ISBN:0-8078-2544-1. "From the valleys of the French Broad and Catawba Rivers to the peaks of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the people of Western North Carolina responded to the war in dramatically different ways. Men and women, masters and slaves, planters and yeomen, soldiers and civilians, Confederates and Unionists, bushwhackers and home guardsmen, Democrats and Whigs--all their stories are told here," says the flier from the UNC Press. I have not seen the book yet myself, but it might be some of you would like to read or have your local library order it. I am not in any way connected to UNC. I do not know whether it will be also issued in paperback form. Betty Pace ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Subject: Fw: William Roberts/ Eleanor Mayhan/Mayhon: I and several others, are trying to find anything about the following family members. William Roberts Sr. b. 1714 in Anne Arundel county Maryland m. Elinor Mayhan/Mahon in Baltimore in 1735. They moved to what was then Rowan county NC. abt. 1741? took up residence, and raised a large family, eleven children? My GGGGrandfather Shadrack Roberts b. 1753, Rowan County, I believe, was one of these children. Is there someone Who has knowledge of this family ? Who could help me establish the family members of William and Elinor and DEFINITELY establish the link to Shadrack. Or at least direct me to on line records that will help me. Sincerely, Roy "Buck"Roberts BRANSONBEST@JUNO.COM
The earliest available tax lists were for 1759,1761 and 1768. Were there any prior to this and they just never survived and is there a regular interval that these were done? I notice 2 years between the first two above and then 7 years on the next two. Thanks Debra Carter tara37@comsys.net
