Enochs is my primary line in this area. Rock I, too, am looking into a John Davis family. I was in the Salisbury library yesterday, reading the 31 May 1841 will of John Davis. His wife is Sarah, but I think she must be a second marriage for him. Sons listed are Hubbard, Wade, and William. Daughters are Magy, Rainy, Jenny, Polly, Patsy, and Lucy. Also, a Wilson Cooper is mentioned--and he was the bondsman for Hubbard's marriage to Sarah Sawyer and also Lucy's marriage. Executor was Michael Redwine and witnesses were Kincheon Stokes and Eli Correl. This family was in Rowan county until their section became Davidson Co. The land was the Shipton Tract on the Yadkin River. I am thinking I need to document all the John Davis families there in an effort to straighten out the connections. Maybe we should get together! Becoming very bored with current projects...which I still have to finish...I found a new, to me, reel of film at the Nat'l Archives today. The series number is M1062 roll 1 of 1 entitled, Correspondence of the War Department Relating to Indian Affairs, Military Pensions, and Fortifications, 1791-1797. Great stuff on the background politics of the Southern Indian Wars between 1791-1800 between various governors, the Secretary of War, Indian chiefs / headmen, and intelligence reports. I found, but could not copy due to the poor quality of the original, a list of approximately 120 people killed by Indians in Tennessee between January 1791 and sometime in 1792. The districts covered were Mero? and Washington. Since I will have to transcribe from film, this will take a few hours but I am so ecstatic about the find I wanted to tell everyone. Since all the lists I subscribe to had had people which ended up in TN, I thought it appropriate to "broadcast" the find. Some geographic names mentioned that I am totally unfamiliar with (and hoping someone can bail me out!) are: Bledsoe's Lick, Smith's Fork, Red River mouth, "new trace", Craft's Mills, Duck, Greenfield ( I think both are in Maury county) & Sumner Court House. Most of the streams seem to have been tributaries of the Cumberland River as that is mentioned often. If someone who knows how the old districts in TN were laid out while it was still a part of NC would email me that information, I would be grateful. Anyway, I should have it all transcribed tomorrow and on-line Sunday morning. I will let all know when it is completed. Best of wishes, Billy P.S. Some surnames so far: Pennington, Milligan, Berkley, Cockran, Viths, Wilson, Hickerson, Thompson, Gibson, [Heykenol?], Fletcher, Harry, Jones, White, Dickson, French, Grantham, Rice, Custis [Curtis?], [Sevier? 3 of them], Boyd, McMurray.
Myrna, None of your Morrow names are familiar to me, and I was glad to learn from Rock that all the similarly-named Davis's I run into are likely the same Davis line. Rock, I would like to talk with you about the Enochs sometime, and make sure I have them placed correctly in my database, as so many married or associated with Bryans. The Ortons seemed to have only one major line in Rowan Co., and they were also connected to the Bryans - marrying the dau of a son of Old Morgan Bryan... William Butler is familiar also, one WB was fairly prominent & political in early times, I think. If you go to the Longhunters-L archives on Rootsweb, and key in William Butler, there is a lot of info posted about him and something might ring a bell with you. Assuming it is the same William Butler; I do not know for sure. In my copy of Ms. Linn's "Rowan Co. Tax Lists" the Morrows show up in districts now in the Iredell Co area. On the 1787 Co Tax list of Aeneas Campbell, a John Morrow shows with 2 wm 21-60; 5 wm -21 or +60; 4 wf. A John Morrow's land does show up on the South fork of the Yadkin, see farthest left bottom of Andrew Lagle's Davie County Land Grants Map. Orton is next door east. Kathryn
This probably won't help much, but I am tracing a Davis family that was in Rowan Co area in the mid 1700's. The name James Davis appeared frequently in this family, and I think it was the only Davis surname family in Rowan area at that time. One of the many James Davis could have been James Davis senior in your will. Could be a link, but this family has been very difficult to search. They name all of their children John, James, or Evan. Let me know if you want to pursue this lead any further. "National Gen Soc Quarterly" XIX of Mar 1931, p 4-10 has a partial listing of the records of the Old Heidleberg Ch 1760-1860 of present day Davie Co, NC. P-6 has the following HANCOCK listing under heading of "Bk Records" : "Elizabeth & Johann HANCOCK b 8 Jul 1791, bapt 4 May 1794, parents & Spon = Wm HANCOCK & wf Margareta." This must be Margaret DETTRO CLEMMER HANCOCK, widow of Valentine "Felty" CLEMMER who d 1785 PA. This is data that I had not seen before. Our dateline for her now looks like: 1] 6 Feb 1787 Rowan Co, NC DB 12/51 has deed from James Andrews to Margaret CLEMARE for 35 pounds for 100 A on Bear Cr that was wit by [bro] Balzer DUTTRO, 2] 1787 Tax List of Rowan Co, NC listing Margrit GEMER next to Bolser TOBBROW, 3] 1 Mar 1792 Rowan Co, NC m for "William M. [This could be: a) his ch by unk prev wf who were bapt aft his 1792 m to Margaret; b) ch by Wm & Margaret b bef their 1792 m; or, ??? Keep in mind that some of us CLEMMER & DETTRO researchers have already credited Wm & Margaret with 2 or more ch, inc - Eliz b 1794 who m Jacob CLONINGER in 1810 Lincoln Co, NC, & an unmarried Molly b ca 1796. Could this be the same Eliz?? And who would be their mother?? And who is the Johann and what happened to him??]. 6] 29 Sep 1811 confirmation at Old Heidleberg Ch for David & Elizabeth DOTHERO. Can anyone correct, expand or add support for the above? Best, Hal McCawley
John MORROW wrote a will dated 14 Sep 1815 recorded Rowan County Book G, p. 398 names: wife Elizabeth eldest sons William and John Morrow daughter Margaret, wife of Hazel DICKEY daughter Jane, wife of James DAVIS Sr. son Allen Morrow son Thomas Morrow son Arthur Morrow daughter Elizabeth, wife of James DAVIS Jr. daughter Nancy (who may have been "not right") son Joseph Morrow daughter Rebecca Morrow mentions land on "the River extending along parallel with James ORTON and William BUTLER". Exec. Allen and Arthur Morrow Wit. Samuel LITTLE, Thomas Morrow Does anyone have further information about ANY of the people named in this will? Particularly, spouses and/or marriage records for the children. Will witnesses and neighboring landowners, also. I'm interested in determining who was the "Elizabeth" who was John Morrow's wife and who were the parents of John Morrow. I believe the oldest son, William Morrow, was born about 1734 and died in 1807, Orange County, North Carolina. Thanks! Myrna Madigan

There is now a version 11 of Family Treemaker (update) - which does allow you to see two files at the same time and go back and forth between them...and also to backup your files onto CD rather than floppy discs - which is great - I just got mine yesterday. Anyone have access to these rec reportedly republished by Jo White Linn in "Rowan Co Reg" 4 Aug 1989, Pages 861-872? I am interested in entries for DOTTRO/DETTERO, YOUNG, CLEMMER and HANCOCK. From my experience, as long as there is a different file name, you can open it without merging into your file. Unless you have the Version 11, you can't look at both of them at the same time. Jonathan died in Lincoln County TN according to what I have found. I, too, am a descendant. A very nice page for anyone researching this line is listed on Cyndi's List as Pat's Pages under North Carolina. I have an old URL, so that's where I go. You could probably google it up. Reams of accurate information including wills, marriages, etc. Goes way back. Good hunting. Lolene
I have found in 1860 census, Guilford Co, Greensboro P.O, South division, page 69, Jno ROSS age 14, b NC, living in house with G.Y. BRIDGES age 30, b NC, and Mary C BRIDGES age 30, b NC. J.F. ROSS age 25, store clerk, is listed On page 602 of the 1870 NC, Rowan Co, Salisbury, he seems to be one of many living in what appears to be a hotel. The start of that household, has listed as his occupation, Keeps "Mansion House". Your John F.M. may have been named John Francis Marion. There are a lot of William Kimballs, various spellings on 1880 census on familysearch.org, as there are a lot of John ROSSes. Good luck.
