    1. [RowanRoots] : James Gheen, a settler in Rowan Co. NC
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. Here are the children of the original James Gheen, a settler in Rowan Co. NC, who probably came down from Chester, PA. He was a cabinetmaker. The Gheen forum at genforum seems to feel that the name was originally Goheen, but I think that is just one possibility. I know the Geohagen name comes from Dublin and Galway. Some researchers think the father of James Gheen (1735-1796) was a Thomas Gheen of West Bradford Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania James Gheen (c.1735-1796) m. Elizabeth? (1739?-1832) 1) Thomas (1760-1828) m. Mary McBride (1767-1842) in 1788 2) James Jr. m. Mary Pinxton in 1788 3) Joseph m. 2 wives 4) Mary m. Silas Dunn in 1788 5) Sarah m. 3. I don't know if they made an error or what, but I just went to www.ancestry.com and clicked on search records at the top of the page. It took me to a place where I could click on ancestry map room. When I got there, I had a whole menu of maps to choose from. I tried two and they came up free. I am not a member of ancestry.com and I don't know why that web site let me browse through their map collection. Maybe it will only be good for a while or maybe I just got lucky. I could have chosen historical maps from all over the world. It is too good to miss. Betty Pace

    1. [RowanRoots] NC Dept. of Archives Probate Search Tip
    2. I just discovered a tip that may help people. To search for all Wills in a particular county, click at the top under the Quick Navagition box, Advanced Search, then SELECT (click the box beside it) the Probate Records section. In your first search criteria, enter the County name. Be sure to change the maximum number of hits to 50!! Best of wishes

    2. I am always amazed when the State gets something right! Today I was visiting the NC Dept. of Archives web site looking for something I had seen previously. Well, I did not find what I was looking for but did discover that the state has put images of many of the original wills filed in the state on-line as well as images from the documents of many of the state's governors. They also have cataloged their collections and you can browse and search through the catalog. The main search page is below (warning, it is a two line or better URL). http://www.ncarchives.dcr.state.nc.us/logicrouter/servlet/LogicRouter?OUTPUTXS L=childbrowse.xsl&hier=h1&tree=c&api_1=PUB_DISP_COLL&hier=builder&tree=c&api_2 =GET_SEARCH_PARM&hier=h1&tree=o&api_3=PUB_DISP_COLL&hier=builder&tree=o&api_4= GET_SEARCH_PARM An easier way to get there is to go the the Dept. of Archives main page, and on the left bottom of the screen, click on the "MARS! Online Catalog..." hyperlink. http://www.ah.dcr.state.nc.us/sections/archives/arch/default.htm Once you get into MARS, the subject headings all have a description with a + sign to the left of the heading. The old wills are listed as: Records of Probate: Wills [View Documents] . On any of the headings, click on the + to show what is below the heading. To see the catolog entry for the individual listing, click on DESCRIPTION. For the Wills, the hierarchy is as follows: Records of Probate: Wills [View Documents] Black-Bright ------Black, Isaac, New Hanover County View Description [ Object ] ------Black, Michael, Craven County View Description [ Object ] ------Blackall, Abraham, Chowan County View Description [ Object ] ------Blackall, Sarah, Chowan County View Description [ Object ] ------Blackledge, Richard, Craven County View Description [ Object ] etc. To see the individual's will, click on VIEW DESCRIPTION which will bring up a page like this: Bright, Simon, Dobbs County Title: Bright, Simon, Dobbs County Years: 1777 MARS Id: 12.96.1.275 (Folder) Index Terms: Geographic Names: Dobbs County Personal Names: Bright, Simon Other Copies: S.108.196 (MFR) On the right you will see an Icon to click to view the image. If you don't see it, click the NEXT to go to the next page (that will be more prevalent in the Govenor's papers). On the viewer, to go from page to page, to me it is quicker to use the drop down box on the menu bar but you can double-click on the next page on the left hand frame. Hint: when viewing at 100% the entire document does not fit into the viewing area. Enlarge that viewing area by dragging the left panel smaller. Gotta go, Patsy Cline's, "I Got Your Picture, She's Got You" just came on i'net radio. <grin> Best of wishes, Billy

    3. Forwarded -- followup to posting containing eldad reed From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: Sun, 11 Jan 2004 17:25:37 EST Subject: [REED] Amaziah and Zebulon Reed There were a number of Reeds in North Yarmouth, Maine. Amaziah Read is said to have been baptized 14 August 1752 probably in North Yarmouth, the son of Bartholomew and Mary (Harris) Read, and was descended from the the Read family of Salem, Massachusetts. I am compiling a book on the first five generations of that family that will be published by Newbury Street Press of the New England Historic Genealogical Society next year some time. The records of Weld Maine say he was born in 1764 and his widow claimed he was born in 1766 in her pension application, but those dates would probably make him too young for his service in the Revolution. He did marry twice, Rhoda Delano in 1785 and Jedidah Bumpus in 1809. He died in Weld, Maine, in 1833. Zebulon Read was born 27 March 1765, probably in North Yarmouth, the son of William and Mary (Tuttle) Read (see NEHGR 98 (1944):207 and the 1861 History of the Reed Family. Some have concluded that William was also of the family of Thomas Read of Salem, but I have concluded that is not likely. This Zebulon married Anna Merrill at North Yarmouth in 1790. She died there in 1811 and Zebulon married second Thankful Winch in 1811. Zebulon died at North Sharon, Maine, 7 May 1844. I have record of anyone in either family moving south, but have not attempted to trace beyond the fifth generation. Such movement was very rare since New Englanders felt that the South was not healthy. Richard H. Benson

    3. FORWARDED FROM REED-L MAILING LIST From: "David Cagle" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Date: Sun, 11 Jan 2004 12:55:10 -0600 Subject: Re: [REED] Zebulon Reed, 1774 MA-1850's TN Janice, I have had one other response that provided virtually the same information that you gave--I have copied same below. All this looks very promising. Ron Stricklin, who is tied to several of my lines, is descended from another set of Reeds here in Hardin Co. who may be related to my Zebulon Reed? Recently I have corresponded to yet another Reed researcher, Sheila Schweitzer, who also had a Zebulon Reed born 1776 in Massachusetts, then moved to NY ca 1815, was there for the 1820 census then died or disappeared. Her information is on Ancestry.com. She and I concluded that this was probably not my Zebulon. (Correspondence form Ron) I have been away on vacation for the last couple of weeks but after our last correspondence was working on the Reeds just before I left. I think I have found Zebulon Reed born 30 May 1774 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA to Ezekiel Reed and Mary Rogers. Ezekiel was born 14 Nov 1722 to John Reed, which might explain Hardin County Zebulon naming a son John Rogers Reed. I also found a Zebulon Reed in 1790 North Yarmouth, Cumberland Co., ME, about a hundred miles north of Bridgewater, curious mostly because on 1 July 1785 in North Yarmouth an Amaziah Reed was married to Rhoda Delano. This Amaziah Reed was born in North Yarmouth in 1766 to David H. Reed and Lydia Bartlett, and Hardin County Amaziah Reed named his first daughter Lydia in 1829. The 1820 Cumberland Co., ME census page 477 lists Zebulon Reed still in North Yarmouth. Another site has an Amaziah Reed born 2 May 1764 in Weld, ME, married Jedidah Bumpass and had children Amaziah Jr. (birthdate unknown), Rhoda (27 Sep 1803), Stephen (19 Jul 1805) and Huldah (12 Jul 1807), all born in Maine. Curious that Hardin County Amaziah Reed, born 6 Sep 1801, fits the birth pattern for this Amaziah, Jr., but he was supposedly born in North Carolina, not Maine. Still another site concludes that there was only one Amaziah Reed who first married Rhoda Delano and produced several children including David and Bartholomew and then married Jedediah Bumpass and generated a second familly. This site mentions descent from "the Salem Reeds". Wayne Co., TN John Reed, born 19 Jun 1774 and married 1801/5 Rowan Co., NC to Lydia Hollis, is said to be a son of Eldad Reed and Jane Whitaker. Eldad Reed, born 1737 in New Jersey and died 1806 in Fairview, Buncombe Co., NC is said to be a son of John Reed, born 1710-1715 in New Jersey Settlement, and Hannah Davis, who moved to North Carolina about 1755. On the 1759 Rowan Co., NC tax list is Samuel Reed, Jr., William Reed, Eldad Reed and John Whitaker. Finally, on 21 Jan 1885 in Mecklenburg Co., NC "Amzi G. Reid, Esq., aged 57 years, 8 months and 21 days, died at his home near Matthew's Station". And in 1891 & 1892 Amzi Reed was listed in a city directory for Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC. Mecklenburg County borders Rowan County to the South. No conclusions on all this yet, just seems like more than coincidence and that the Hardin and Wayne County Reeds may have come from New England by way of Rowan and Mecklenburg Co., NC Ron Stricklin [email protected] Ezekiel Reed 14 Nov 1722 - 1763 buried at sea, s/o John Reed and Mary Wheeler/Whitmarsh Hannah Beal[e] 31 May 1725 - married 25 Sep 1742 1 Ezekiel Reed 3 Mar 1744 Abington, Plymouth, MA - 12 Apr 1830 N.
