    1. PORTER/PARKS
    2. Donna Payo
    3. Hello List: I'm hoping someone can help solve this puzzle for me. I'm looking for the woman that posted the following message about the Porters. I've tried emailing her and it just bounces back to me. I am interested in the same family. Her name is Carole Anderson. Thanks I have just begun researching the Porter family in Rowan Co, and have found what seem to be several "heads" of families, whom I would like to tie together or leave separate, in hopes of finding my own Porters. The family groups I've come up with seem to be: 1. Lawrence Porter ( who m. Betsy Park in 1817). There seems to be a Lawrence father/son here, not sure which is which. They lived on Dutch Second Creek. 2. James Porter who lived on Fourth Creek as early as 1786, may have sons, brothers named William, James, Thomas. 3. Thomas Porter who bought land on Walnut Creek in 1765. 4. James Porter who m. Jenny Thomas in 1809 and had a son James also, m. to Anna Luvinia Pool. 5. William Porter whose will was probated in 1761 and had only one son Robert. 6. Robert Porter who m. Elizabeth McBroom in 1767. 7. John Porter who m. Elizabeth Wasner, a widow, and John Porter who m. Elizabeth d/o John Beaver. I have more information on these men/families from court records, but would like to know if they are connected and anything on any of them, but mostly on 1)Lawrence and 4) James as these are definitely in my line. Thanks. Carole

    1. John Moses Fries of Rowan County, NC
    2. I am trying to locate the parents of John Moses Fries, who was born about 1841 and died in 1899, and was buried in Salisbury, Rowan County. He married Sarah Rebecca Honeycutt on 26 November 1866 in Cabarrus County, NC. Census records and will abstracts have been less than conclusive in research. There is a Moses listed in the 1850 household of Caleb Freeze. That son was born in 1842 or 1843. Is this the same man? I have yet to investigate the parents of Sarah Rebecca Honeycutt, who may well have been living in Cabarrus County when she married in 1866. I live in Cabarrus and can hunt her down when time allows, but does anyone have any helpful information on her? I descend from their son William Arthur Fries of Rowan County. Katherine Dick Benbow

    3. Here you can search your surname for whatever records are on the internet. Some take you to Ancestry.com, which means you might get a census name, but no information other that state and county. Still useful. www.genealogybuff.com has over 300 places to lookup your surnames and a lot of other information This seems to be for Canada and the U.S. and is worth exploring. Betty Pace

    1. George WILSON and Mary ADAMS, m. 1787
    2. Harold Clupper
    3. George WILSON married Mary ADAMS in Surry County, NC 10 JAN 1787. Although these folks married in Surry County, I suspect that they were from an adjoining area. Do you find any evidence of these folks in your county? I'm trying to determine if they are the same family that moved to Indiana before 1808 from an unknown location and entered land in 1811. At that time this family consisted of George WILSON (1762-1844), spouse Mary (?-1856), sons John WILSON (b. 1788, VA) and William WILSON (b. 1792, NC), and daughter Rachel WILSON (b. 1809, IN). Other children, birthplace and date unknown, are Joseph, Margaret and Elizabeth. I would appreciate any information that might tend to prove (or disprove) the connection between these two families. Thank you for any info, Harold Clupper [email protected]

    1. IOOF
    2. I am pretty certain that IOOF stands for Independant Order of Odd Fellows. I do not know muich about the organization, but I believe that it was one of many fraternal organizations. I found their website at www.ioof.org It contains the following information To Improve and Elevate the Character of Man In 17th century England, it was odd to find people organized for the purpose of giving aid to those in need and of pursuing projects for the benefit of all mankind. Those who belonged to such an organization were called "Odd Fellows". Odd Fellows are also known as "The Three Link Fraternity" which stands for Friendship, Love and Truth. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows was founded on the North American Continent in Baltimore, Maryland, on April 26, 1819 when Thomas Wildey and four members of the Order from England instituted Washington Lodge No. 1. This lodge received its charter from Manchester Unity of Odd Fellows in England. Odd Fellowship became the 1st national fraternity to include both men and women when it adopted the beautiful Rebekah Degree on September 20, 1851. This degree is based on the teachings found in the Holy Bible, and was written by the Honorable Schuyler Colfax who was Vice President of the United States during the period 1868-1873. Odd Fellows and Rebekahs were also the first fraternal organization to establish homes for our senior members and for orphaned children.

    3. Yes, it's one of the best annotated articles I've ever seen. Lots of references to follow up on, if you're interested. I knew there was a "land difficulty" from other reading, but this web page gives details and explains why when Gov. Tryon's tax men got greedy, our ancestor's got mad. Great background. Also has names of the people who came to Jersey Settlement, NC. All in all a rare piece of work. Lolene

    3. For those with ties to the Jersey Settlement, including Merrell, Mershon, Clark, etal, try googling Jersy Settlement NC. There is a web page with some really good history on the subject which comes up near the top. I won't attempt to list the URL since it's very long. If I missed something, it would be useless. If you use only Jersey Settlement, you will get a page in PA, which proved good fortune for me, but you might not be interested. Lolene
