It is on-line at HeritageQuest. I just searched Rowan County (they have lots more, too). If you are lucky your local library may have a subscription which you can access with your library card number. I got it by subscribing to the Godfrey Memorial Library, www.godfrey.org . There are other subscription libraries and historical or genealogical societies that offer it. Yes, I know it well. I have the CD... It contains .pdf files of both the translation AND the scans of the original book... Please don't cover me up with lookup requests, though! I believe you're talking about A History of Rowan County, North Carolina, ("containing sketches of Prominent Families and Distinguished Men, with an Appendix"), by Rev. Jethro Rumple. It was originally published in 1881 by J. J. Bruner of Salisbury - who was an ancestor of my husband. It has been republished since by Heritage Books, Inc., of Bowie, MD. Betty, Thank you so much for all your input to this list. You have helped me many times. I shouldn't be giving advice since I have not been to the NC Archives, but it is not because I have not wanted to go. Several folks that have been there many times have told me recently that there is much to be found that is no longer in the counties, or that has never been in the county. I plan a trip there soon myself if health allows. I have been to Salisbury and the Rowan County Library there is fantastic due to the many records and resources and private files. They are one of, if not the best. Searching at the courthouse and the register of deeds there leaves a lot to be desired from my point of view. I have roots in Rowan and recently was able to get beyond one of my dead-ends there by ordering every will and all estate papers for all the folks with the surname of RICE. And then someone from the Rowan list told me about a book on the history of Unity Presbyterian Church in Rowan which has so much genealogy information and helped me a lot. If you live in NC, I'm sure you know how simple it is to order on-line from the archives. Most documents are only $2.00 which includes searching and copying. If there are a lot of pages to copy, the fee is a little more. Turn around time is about 3 weeks total. Peggy Crane Caldwell County NC -----Original Message----- From: Betty A. I just discovered that Betty Camden's Bastardy Bonds book is shown in most (if not all) North Carolina counties on the below Linkpendium web site. First get to the county you are searching and find Bastardy Bonds on the menu. Sometimes the year dates aren't in order. For instance, Rowan Co. jumped from 1809 into the 1870s and I had to scroll down to find the 1811 entries. Betty Pace > http://www.linkpendium.com/

I have tried to research JOHN POOL (d.1832--wife Elizabeth), but there were two John Pools in Rowan Co. in this time frame. One was descended from the Dutch Van Pools and apparently the other was an English Pool/Poole. There was a family story that we were Dutch and originally Van Pools, but this might just be a story. One Van Pool researcher told me that the property of my John Pool was not located in the same area as the other Van Pools, but I don't know if this is accurate or relevant. In addition, that Van Pool researcher said that my John Pool was too wealthy (owned slaves--I have a document on this) and therefore could not be a Van Pool. John Pool turned up in Rowan Co., NC about 1810. He bought valuable property, so he was not from a poor family. Where did the money come from? I suspect he moved from another NC county before coming to Rowan Co. NC. Blow aare his descendants. DAVID L(awton?). POOL(B.1810-13) was a silversmith in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC after the death of his father JOHN POOL(wife ELIZABETH, d.1839) in 1832. David was the executor of his father's will. Later David L. Pool sold his share of the Rowan Co. plantation/property to his brother Joseph. Other children of John and Elizabeth Pool (besides David L.) named in the will were: 1)ELIZABETH POOL (b.6/1807-d.1834) m.PETER M. BROWN (m.1828) John Lewis Brown m. Nannie Jane Kerr Margaret C. POOL is the father of my ggrandfather CLAYTON W. POOLE (1848-1908) of Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC. Clayton's mother was ANGELINE BULLEN/BOLIN/BULLARD of Rowan Co., NC; in the 1850 Rowan Census she was living with a BULLAND family and the census taker gave both ANGELINE and CLAYTON the surname of the host family (CATHERINE BULLAND), but this may be her mother CATY BULLEN. I originally couldn't find David L. Pool in the 1850 Rowan census. The Vincent papers gave this reference for David L. Pool on the 1850 Rowan census, on p. 138, 420.430, and a kind lady did a lookup for me. I don't know what the addition by the Asst.Marshall means.. Mary J. Occassionally I mention this to a list - in case the NEWBIES dont know about it . Random Acts of Geneaological Kindness - RAOGK - > This is a great site if you need an out of town lookup . These are all VOLUNTEERS who will do various kinds of free lookups - { in some instances a reimbursement is necessary } . I do lookups for 3 different states from my personal resources & some from the Library in Missouri . RAOGK can always use more VOLUNTEERS . Even if you only have ONE resource -- maybe a cemetery book or a census book for a particular year for a particular county -- any help would be welcome & much appreciated by those who dont have the same . I have been helped by many of the volunteers in other states - so I am just saying -- if someone from RAOGK blesses you with some kind of " help " why not pass it on and share a RESOURCE that you may have . Everyone does not have the time to go to the Library even every other weekend but a resource ' in home ' can be invaluable to someone who is looking for a clue ' to break through a brick wall ' & wont take tht much time to do a look for someone . I am currently INDEXING 3 old , big books tht I have acquired -- to make it faster to do a " look " . Let me tell you -- now tht is work . This will take me months ! I am acquiring a great appreciation for the people who are uploading so much info on the internet & indexing it . Anyway , thought I would put tht bug in youre ear :) in case the Newbies dont know about RAOGK . RAOGK.org -- pass it on sheri writting my family history & leaving a legacy for my children & grandchildren . KING - TOMPKINS - PETTY - TODD - MOORMAN - LAUDETT - CHESHIRE

Hello, I am new to the list and am searching for connections to several Millers from NC who later appear in mid-1800's Barbour Co., AL: William 1773 NC Lewis 1803 NC (gravestone indicates 1st Seminole War service, GA Militia) Asa 1805 NC Martin 1812 NC Andrew J 1816 NC We have Lewis, Asa, Martin, and Andrew Jackson Miller in Barbour 1850 and 1860 census, all born NC, and many with same naming patterns in their children. Lewis is in Barbour in the 1880 census, and he gives origins NC NC NC. My G'sGrandmother, Mrs. Archibald D. (Elizabeth) Cooper, 1804 NC-1862 AL, is thought to be a Miller and is possibly a sister to the above younger Millers. Thinking this is possibly a family unit, I have looked for William Millers in 1810 NC census, searching for a listing with at least two boys and one girl, and parents of appropriate age. I did find such in 1810 Rowan, NC, and I also noticed in 1820 census an Asa and Martin Miller appearing there. Families usually tended to repeat names. I understand from stories of a Miller descendant in AL that the Miller line came from northern Ireland to North Carolina. Any thoughts, information, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I don't have much to go on. I am happy to share. Sincerely, Cathy
