    1. Head of Household Out of Town
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. If the head of the household was out of town on census day, was his/her name included in the census at the home county location? In order words, how did a census taker handle a family member who was traveling or away from home temporarily? I have also wondered who in the household would be in a position to give census information to the census taker, assuming that the farmer was in the field at that time or the shopkeeper at his shop during business hours. Guesswork by a family member would certainly account for inaccurate information on ages, places of birth, etc. I know in the U.K. census reports, when a family member was away from home, he/she was not shown in the home location but would be picked up at the address of temporary residence and shown as a traveler/visitor. "The images can be downloaded free for personal use. Use of the images for publication or in film, television or the Internet can be arranged through the library's Permissions Department." 1. W. MORGAN WILSON--Civil War Confederate Soldier
    2. Betty A. Pace
    3. My William M.(Morgan?) WILSON died before May 1864, as that is when his estate was settled in Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC. There is a W. MORGAN WILSON shown in Co. C, 8th NC Regiment from Rowan Co. NC; he was said to have died in Salisbury while home on furlough, possibly of wounds/disease--no date given (Jethro Rumple Roll of Honor in his History of Rowan Co. NC). I do not know if this is the same person as my William M. WILSON as Rumples' ages don't match the 1850 census exactly. However, it seems like a great coincidence. Does anyone know anything about this man or this Civil War Confederate Unit? Betty Pace

    1. WELKER, FLETCHER
    2. Rose Green
    3. Just posting again, since it's been awhile. I'm looking for information on WELKERS and FLETCHERS in Rowan county. Adam WELKER lived there, married about 1802 to Sarah FLETCHER. Their children were as follows: James Robert, b. 1803 Sarah Ann, b. 1805 Adam, b. 1806 Sarah, b. 1808 William, b. 1811 or 1812 Previous to Sarah, Adam, sr. was married to Nancy Fletcher, married 1793 in Surry county. The IGI has some connections to Germany for Adam, but the connection seems rather patchwork to me, and James Hook's book on Ellers (Georg Michael Eller and Descendants of His in America) doesn't seem to support the theories in the IGI. As far as I can tell, Adam and Sarah just crawled out from under some rocks in NC one day, and there they were. Any info or suggestions are welcome. Rose Green

    1. National Archives Image Resources
    2. The National Archives is perhaps an overlooked on-line resource for images of pictures or documents for most researchers. However, I have found some nice stuff there relating to projects I have been working on which has saved postage and copying fees. This morning, I found that there are many, many photos of homes in Western NC, SE VA, and Eastern TN which were impacted by floods or the TVA. In addition, there are many photos of coal mining, textile, furniture workers, CCC and TVA construction sites. For Afro-American researchers, they have the images of the Death & Interment Records for USC troops who died at Nelson General Hospital at Camp Nelson, KY during the Civil War. Here is a step-by-step guide to access this resource. 1) Go to NARA's Archival Research Catalog: _http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/_ (http://www.archives.gov/research_room/arc/) 2) In the top left corner, you will see a yellow "Search" button, click this. This will take you to the Basic Search page. 3) At the Basic search page, ENSURE that under "FILTER YOUR SEARCH," you check the box beside "DESCRIPTIONS of ARCHIVAL MATERIALS LINKED TO DIGITAL COPIES." 4) Enter your search term. 5) Set the "Limit Results to" box to 2000. I have not had much success with the "Advanced Search" so I don't use it often. You may have to play around with keywords to get in the neighborhood of what you are looking for. Notes: 1) If you find something relevant, or simply interesting, you can click on the first link beneath the image which will give a fuller description of the image as well as the record archive from which it comes. Clicking the link, "Larger Image" brings up a larger image but they do not have any captions. 2) If you want to reference an image without saving it to your PC, ALWAYS note the ARC Identifier !!! That is important as search queries and results locations are not saved. The ARC ID is a permanent identifier for the image. 3) The Search Results time-out fairly quickly if no activity is detected (I think about 10 minutes), so if that happens, you pretty well have to start over. Let me know if you have any further questions and I will attempt to answer them. Rather than clogging up the list, just send the question to me privately and if I think it warrants a wider audience, I will compile the questions and answers. Feel free to forward this to any who you feel may benefit. It has been so long since I have looked at my genealogy addresses, I have sort of forgotten who is who with which list, which may explain why some of you get multiple copies :> And before anyone asks what I have been doing, I am working on the PFH, aka, the Project from Hades. That is the project in which I am endeavoring to identify every US soldier, by name, who died on the western frontier (defined by me as west of the Mississippi and east of Alcatraz Island) from all causes: disease, accident, suicide, murder and combat between the years 1849 and 1895. I hope to include some genealogical data in the finished form which seems (and is) light-years away. With hope that everyone finds something at NARA that they did not know existed, Billy
