Would anyone on the list be able to advise me as to the approximate location of the "plantation" of Samuel Bryan(the noted Loyalist leader from Rowan during the RW)? I have only a vague note that it was along the Yadkin River. If anyone has a good idea, I have a follow-on question to add: how close was Samuel Bryan's plantation to Potts Creek?? Thanks, Larry
I would be interested in the list, too. If anyone has that, would you mind posting it for us? Thanks, Jayme
Very interesting, and thanks; however, this leads to my next question......anyone have ready access to that 1783 Minute Docket???? If someone has access to a copy of Rumple's History of Rowan Co., I have a favor to ask: I found a citation which referenced pp. 168-170 of that book(1881)in which the author says that 182 residents of Rowan Co. were summoned to appear before the Rowan Co. Inferior Court in 1783 "to show cause why they should not have their estates confiscated." Does Rumple's work actually list the 182 persons(ex-loyalists, I would presume)? And if so, is that list available via an on-line source? Thanks, Larry D.H. Coats
Obituaries Aug. 2, 1944 - Greensboro Daily News, Greensboro, NC MRS. H. F. STARR [formerly Clara Bell Wilson Pace of Salisbury, NC] Funeral for Mrs. H. F. Starr, 85, who died at her home in Pleasant Garden yesterday morning after an illness of two years [heart trouble--bap], will be held today at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Garden Methodist Church with Rev. T. F. Higgins, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in Alamance Presbyterian Church cemetery. The body will remain at Hanes Funeral home until an hour before the funeral and will then be carried to the church. [Clara Bell Wilson Pace was the widow of John Fletcher Pace Police Chief of Salisbury, who died in 1901, and the mother of my grandfather Charles W. Pace. In 1904 she remarried to Henry Franklin Starr, and in 1910 they were living in Salisbury. When he recame a minister, they left Salisbury for other parts of NC. In 1920 he was a minister in Stanley Co., NC, Ridenhour township. In 1930 they were in Fentress twnship, Guilford Co., NC] A native of Salisbury, Mrs. Starr has lived in Pleasant Garden for the past 18 years. She was a member of the Pleasant Garden Methodist church. Surviving are her husband, Rev. H. F. Starr, retired Methodist minister of the western North Carolina conference; one son, Charles W. Pace, Bluefield, W. Va.; one step-son, Dr. H. F. Starr, Sedgefield, and three step-daughters, Mrs. A. H. Masters, and Mrs. J. R. Burch, Greensboro, and Mrs. Victor McAdams, Denver Colo. [Clara Bell Wilson was born in 1857-58 in Salisbury NC; she was the daughter of William M. Wilson and Caroline Earnhardt --tied to Schmidt line. Caroline Earnhardt later married a Burgess upon the death of W. M. Wilson in 1864.} Feb. 24, 1946 Greensboro Daily News, Greensboro, NC (with photo--elderly) DEATH CLAIMS REV. H. F. STARR Retired Minister To be Buried Today Rev. Henry Franklin Starr, 89, retired Methodist minister of the Pleasant Garden community, died at 4 p.m. yesterday at Wesley Long hospital after a long illness [heart trouble & pneumonia--bap] Prior to his retirement in 1926, Rev. Mr. Starr held many charges in the Western North Carolina Methodist conference, including those at Ruffin, Albemarle, Coleridge, and other churches in the Western North Carolina Methodist conference. Following his retirement, it was his custom to occupy the pulpit at Pleasant Garden Methodist church, of which he was a member, on each birthday, through his 89th last April. His first wife, Mrs. Annie Young Starr, died in 1901, and he later married Mrs. Clara Pace, who died in 1944. [She had been the widow of John Fletcher Pace of Salisbury, whose father was Abner Pace originally from Guilford Co., NC.] Surviving are three daughters Mrs. A. H. Masters, and Mrs. J. R. Burch, Greensboro, and Mrs. Victor McAdams, Denver Colo.; one son Dr. Frank Starr, Greensboro [MD who signed death certificate], nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral will be conducted at Pleasant Garden Methodist Church at 3 p.m. today by Rev. R. A. Hunter, pastor, and Rev. T. F. Higgins, pastor of Muir's Chapel Methodist Church, and Dr. W. A. Lambeth, Greensboro district superintendent of the Methodist church, conducted the service. . Burial will be in Alamance Presbyterian Church cemetery. The body will remain at Hanes Funeral home until one hour prior to the service. I was surprised that he became a minister so late in life (after 1910) and retired in 1926. Maybe he was a part-time minister early in his ministry Rev. H. F. Starr was the son of Daniel Starr (Born: Abt 1820 in Guilford Co, NC ) and Sarah M. "Sally" Low (Born about 1830 in Guilford Co, NC) The father of Daniel Starr was Abner Starr. Betty Pace - [email protected]
I deleted an email by mistake and cannot recover it. Would the lady that responded to an email about old rowan county KINGS, please email me. I would like to know the if Richard King lived in present day Rowan County or areas closed to the TN border. Also are any of the KINGS listed in 1759 tax, children of this Richard. In other words, of all the Kings in the 1759, which ones belong to this family. Doyle
I know that the archives of the Salisbury Post burned in 1912. Another source for an 1832 obit might be the Carolina Watchman. Was it in existence in 1832 and would the Rowan history room have access to 1832 obits? I am looking for an obit of my JOHN POOL (will probated Nov. 1832, but I don't have the exact date of his death) Betty Pace
Hi I have a copy of Carolina Cradle... Here is a short blurb about a KING family pg. 128 of Carolina Cradle Settlement of the Northwest Carolina Frontier 1747-1762 Author Robert W. Ramsey "The King and Lawrence families originated in New Jersey. Richard King, a clotheir, was born in Ireland, near Dublin. He migrated ot America in 1728, settling first in Phildelphia. In 1735, following the death of his first wife, King married Margaret Barclay in Middlesex or Summerset County, New Jersey. Described as a 'short , thick man, quick in manner and temper.' King removed to Carolina in 1755 or 1756 and settled with his sons James and Robert on the waters of Wilthrow's Creek. Sources: Family data (King) in vol 14 of James King Hall Collection, Southern Historical Collection, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C. N.C. Land Grants, VI, 170-71; Rowan Deeds, II, 288, !V, 534: Family data (King) in vol. 14 of James King Hall Collection, Robert King, probably a brother of Richard, was collector of taxes in Little Britain township, Lancaster County, in 1742, Commissioners's Minute Book, 1729-70, Office of County Commissioner, Lancaster, Pa., p. 58. THere is more on James King, Richard King, Robert (son of Richard) and Robert (brother of Richard) If you would like to have it let me know. Hope this helps in a small way. Julia K. To be taxed in 1759, he was at least 16 years old. Rick Saunders http://genealogypro.com/fsaunders.html
Edward King born about 1745 and listed in early Wilkes County, NC state census. I think the Edward King listed in 1759 Rowan County NC tax list is he. One account states that Edward King was not a taxable, but was a chain surveyor which would mean he was a young teenager. Therefore; one of the men listed in the 1759 taxables was most likely his father. Those of you who have researched the KINGS in Old Rowan , can you help me eliminate some of the KINGS as a possibility. Doyle King [email protected]
I was hoping that someone had access to the book, A History of Rowan County, NC by BY REV. JETHRO RUMPLE and could do a lookup for me. The index lists the names Pearson and Person. I was hoping that someone could tell me what the book says about these names. Thanks, Leslie Ann
Diane, In the book "Rowan County North Carolina Index of Loose Estate Papers 1750-1927" by June Clodfelter Watson, there are the following BURKE'S (the dates are death dates): Abner 1841 Henry C. 1841 (See Estates: Mary Burke 1842) Elizabeth W. 1856 Hiel 1841 (See Estates: Mary Burke 1842) Mary 1842 John P. 1852 Margaret 1847 Thomas A. 1891 William 1843 Burkee, Benjamin P. 1866 What I did with my RICE surname was to order all of the papers for that name to find what I wanted. Copies of the estate papers can be ordered from the NC Archives in Raleigh. I believe copies may be in the Rowan County Library in Salisbury. Dear Ann, I appreciate your help. I don't know much about Rev. Henry Frank Starr. I did find the family in the 1910 Salisbury census, but as I read the report he is shown as a merchant--of course it could read minister (not entirely clear). He was married to Clara Bell Wilson Pace as a reverend. In the 1820 Stanly Co. census (Ridenhour town) he is shown as a minister, but no denomination given. The Pace family were Lutherans, and Clara Bell had been raised a Lutheran because her mother was an Earnhardt--linked to the Schmidt line--all Lutherans. This of course doesn't meant that Rev. Henry F. Starr was a Lutheran. Rev. Henry and Clara are buried in Guilford Co., NC. Maybe that was his last ministry or maybe that is where family lived. I believe I found a tombstone in Guilford of a Dorothy Starr that I think was his first wife. I know he had a son named Frank because he is with them in 1910 Salisbury, Rowan Co., NC. When they are in Stanley Co. in 1920, the son may be in Wake Co., NC, but I can't be certain it is him. Clara was b. in 1857, and the Rev. was a few years older that she. Thanks for any help.
