The students, accompanied on the Montana trip by William Seivers, Dalles high school band director, gained their recognition from placings they received in the various musical events staged under the direction of widely known and celebrated conductors. In the orchestra, under the direction of James R. Robertson, conductor of the Wichita Symphony, Neil Roth was principal celloist among 20 other competitors; Jerry Harris was principal viola over 14 or 15 other players; Nick Wheeler gained the second chair position among 12 other basses; Lois Delano, bassoonist, was awarded first chair second bassoon and Clair Hunt was placed in the second cornet section. Joe Irby, second trombonist in The Dalles high school band, was advanced to the third chair, first trombone in the 190 piece all Northwest band directed by Clarence E. Sawhill, director of the University of Southern California band. The choir, under the baton of Maynard Klein, conductor of the University of Michigan choir, saw Bob Boyles sing first bass in the boysÂ’ chorus and choir and Beverly Goodwin sing second soprano in the girlsÂ’ glee and 380 voice chorus. In comparison to the other schools attending the meet from the five Northwestern states represented, The Dalles had more students playing prominent parts than any other entry. Credit for the performance of the local students goes to Glenn Betschart, string ensemble director at Dalles high school, and Band Director William Seivers.
