Posted on: Roth Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/rot/Roth/160 Surname: Roth ------------------------- I do not have any Quentius Roth in my data base for the Village in Russia. Most of our village members immigrated into the US in the early 1900's. Your Roth family would have been in the US long before that time. I suspect your Roths were of Germanic origin. The ones I am seeking left Germany in the 1700's for Russia and lived there until the 1900's when they emigrated in large numbers to avoid starvation, war, communism and being sent to Siberia. This group of people kept their german language and customs in Russia where they settled along the Volga. They were pioneers in the Russian Steppe, developing the land into productive farm land. They were so successful and prosperous, that they became enemies of the State when communism became the law of the land. Sorry I could not help you.

Quentius was believed to have left his family for the gold fields of California in the 1850's. He was never heard from again. In case anyone is interested, AncientFaces ( http://www.ancientfaces.com ) has just added a "mystery photos" section. You can submit those pictures of kin that have remained unidentified in your family for years-and maybe someone will recognize them and email you! Pretty cool. I'm adding several! Pam Marks
I've just joined the list. I've found my great grandfather was John L. Roth, a Mennonite farmer who lived in Wesseley, Waterloo Ontario. He was born in 1859 in Waterloo County and died in 1946 in Michigan. He moved his family of 10 children to the "thumb" area of Michigan in 1892. John L.'s wife was Catherine Ropp who was born in 1861 in Perth County Ontario. His sons were Joseph (my grandfather), Jonathan, Clayton and Christian. His daughters were Elizabeth, Catherine, Amelia (Mollie), Mary Ann, Adeline (Addie), and Gladys. Please let me know if you have any information on this group of people. Thanks. My Roths were in New York in the 1920s, first on the Lower East Side and then in Brooklyn. They were from Chodorow, which was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and then, after WWI, in Poland. Hi, I was given some very old pages from a Bible many years ago, and have held on to them hoping to find the family they belong to...I hope that someone one on this mailing list will recognize some of the names/dates, and claim them. The writing is cursive, hard to make out, and I believe in German..so please forgive me if I make a mistake in translating the info :o) Here are some of the clearer entries: Johnni ROLF August 30, 1887 Columbus Ohio Ralfovina August 1, 1889 Columbus Ohio Morice Ralfasina ROLF Sept. 3, 1891 Columbus Ohio Margeretha Fligabelt ROTH August 21 1894 Columbus, Ohio Johann ROTH (or RATH) June (or July) 27, 1861 Magaretha Jan 17, 1866 heiligen (married?) Nov 25, 1886 (Looks like "Kinche" Columbus, Ohio) another page (as if it is from another Bible) has: Johann 8-30-1889 Maria Katharina 8-1-1889 Maria Magaretha 3-6-1891 and yet another page has Irving ROELF 4-11-1830 If any of these remotely ring a bell, please let me know...keep in mind that I may have some of the letters in the name wrong due to the hard to read, writing (ie., I think the "Morice Ralfasina" is most likely "Maria Katharina"...but just in case, I have typed it the way it appears on the page) I do not have any ROTH family, but in searching my own history, I know how valuable Bible pages can be--so I really hope there is someone out there to claim these! *hugs* Lorrie SOWDER lorilyn@pmail.net
