    1. Re: Henry Roth (b. 02/25/1871, d. 05/01/1954)
    2. Why might Henry have gone half-way around the world? The Germans in Russia accepted an offer by Catherine the Great (in the mid 1700's) to come to Russia. She made many promises at the time, but by the mid to late 1800's, many of those promises were no longer kept. One big reason why many left Russia in the late 1800's and early 1900's was that for the first time, the Germans were being required to serve in the Russian Military. You can find more info at the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia website at www.AHSGR.org. I hope this helps! Connie Geringer Armstrong garmstrong@mediaone.net

    1. Henry Roth (b. 02/25/1871, d. 05/01/1954)
    2. I'm looking for any info on Henry Roth such as who his siblings were, who his parents were, etc. I believe he was one of the Germans from Russia (most likely Bessarabia). He came over to America around the age of 16 (by himself!!!) and settled in Adams County in Washington state to farm. If anyone has any idea of who his family was or why he would move halfway around the world as a teenager, please help me out. I asked my grandfather (Henry's son) before he died about his father, and he told me that he didn't know either and said that he was probably a stowaway which would explain why I can't seem to find any records of him.

    1. Roth-Germans from Russia
    2. My Grandfather was Adam Roth, b. 1890. His parents were Peter and Mary (?) Roth. I know that they were from the Saratov area, but I don't know what village. Adam came to America in 1911, and settled in the Sugar City, Colorado area. He met and married my Grandmother, Katie Keller, in 1914. They farmed in Colorado and Kansas until 1923, when they moved to Fresno, California with their 3 young daughters. Adam died suddenly in November 1923. It is possible that Adam had a brother who came to America with him, but we aren't sure. If anyone has any information, we would be grateful to hear about it! Thank you! 1. Re: Roth's of Lafayette, Indiana
    2. I'm also looking for some Indiana Roths, specifically my g-grandfather Charles Roth and (possibly) a son or brother named Craig Roth. Charles wife may have been named Sarah (possibly Mueller/Miller). My grandfather Harry Lamont Roth was born 15 Oct 1862, so Charles would be been born before 1842 at least. Harry's death certificate shows his place of birth as "Pennsylvania" (no town). If true, Charles would have had to move to Indiana after 1862. Family lore has it that this family was Pennsylvania Dutch. Also that Charles owned a hotel in Indiana, but I'm not certain of the town. Obviously, none of this info has been verified, except (perhaps) Harry's birthdate. Even there, it's information that was given by his 19-year-old daughter at the time of his death in 1913. I have not been able to locate Harry's place of birth and, thus, have no birth certificate for him. Pennsylvania records before a certain date are not centralized. They have to be requested from each county seat. Harry's birthdate falls into this category. And I haven't yet done the hard work of writing to every county in Pennsylvania to inquire about his birth. If anyone knows of this family, I would appreciate their contacting me. Thanks for your help, Lois >----- At 02:44 PM 23-07-01 -0600, awier1966@yahoo.com wrote: >Hi Judith, I am >interested in the Susan Cavanaugh mentioned in your message. My great >grandfathers mother was a Susan Cavanaugh. He was born in >Rensselear,Indiana in 1868.Since you have no dates listed for Susan I am >curious.Thank You.
