Hi listers I am new to this list, and have been going thru the archives, where I noticed several posting on the Highland Clearances. My gr. Gr grandfather James Campbell came out from Portree in 1835 to Tasmania, Australia. I have a copy of a ticket issued for his trip from Leith to Hobart Town and a copy of a reference from the Portree manse dated the 16.8.1835, where he had been living for the previous five years. His father Robert Campbell according to his sisters death certificate (Anne Campbell/Stewart) was a farmer. James was born in Fortingall 8th May 1804 to Robert Campbell and Jean Cameron. My query is could he have been part of the highland clearances? And is there any information as to who emigrated, as I am curious to find out who paid £21.00 for his trip to Tasmania on a Cargo ship, North Briton. I have ordered the book from our library on the highland clearances, but as it is a small library I have to wait a couple of weeks for it to come in from the state library.
