Dear Listers, I'm after help with a capital "H'. I have some parts of letters which were written by a relative in 1897, 1899 and 1901. She was Christina McLean [nee McKenzie] and wrote from 33 Harbour St, Plockton, Rosshire. I know they were long term residents of this address as Christina was writing to a cousin and in part said that she was living on the site of their grandfathers house. The Grandfather was a John McKenzie, Master Mariner. In the third letter 1901 she refers to the drowning of a Captain Alex McLennan who was the eldest son of the writers sister. Apparently he was retired from the sea as he was a ship owner but on this occassion took a fishing boat and along with his father and some other relatives went fishing at Locheshor [sic] Isle of Skye. I have obtained a copy of his death referance from Scotlands People and it tells me that he died 15th June 1899 by drowning in sea between Portnacloich and Drumbuie, Lochalsh and that his usual residence was Achnadarroche, Lochlash. Now my spelling or interpretation of this copy may be incorrect and I would appreciate it if someone would correct me and also if anyone has access to old newspapers that may have reported the incident that could tell me who else drowned with him. Apparently there were several deaths as the letter writer says "that the accident cast a glooming over the whole village". I will be grateful for any information at all.
