My understanding of the origin of this MacKenzie family name was given to me from the librarian at Inverness a number of years ago. Around the time of Hector Roy MacKenzie, 1st of Gairloch (died c1528), a body of Mackenzie's went to aid Ewen Beag M'Connel M'Ewan of Locheil (the Cameron's) in Lochaber in some dispute or other with the MacIntoshes. As they were from the north they were given a 'nickname' and 'Tuachach' has in the gaelic some sort of inference to northerner. When some of these Mackenzie's returned north they continued to be known by their Lochaber nickname. Hector Roy's half-brother Duncan of Hilton was married to Ewan Cameron, 12th of Locheil. Hector Roy had a number of sons; John Glassic, his heir Kenneth of Meikle Allan, now Allangrange **John Tuach, who inherited Scatwell ** Dugal Roy His daughters married; Bayne of Tulloch John Aberach MacKay James Bayne Fraser of Bunchrew, son of Lovat, killed at Blar-na-Leine ancestors of the Fraser's of Reelick (The above information was extracted from 'History of the Genealogy of the Mackenzie's by Alexander MacKenzie'. My link is with Christina Tuach born c1810 Inverness who married Thomas Petrie 24 May 1847 Inverness. She died at Elgin in 1877 age 67 Father ---- Tuoch, Mother Isabella Tuoch m/s McLennan. I found a possible baptism in Gairloch for Christina; '1811, Christina, April 20, Roderick McKenzie and Isabell McLennan tenant farmer, land of Udnagal' Also in Dingwall there was married on 1 Sept 1797, Kenneth MacKenzie and Isabel McLennan. I have still to do research on Christina Tuach and her possible parents so can't say much more. That's all for now, Regards Alasdair Macdonald Currie, Midlothian -----Original Message----- From: Kyle Mcallister [mailto:Kylem@tesco.net] Sent: 14 June 2004 14:24 To: SCT-INVERNESS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [SCT-INV] Tuach McKenzie, Kiltarlity, 1880 I am looking for any links to the Tuach Mckenzie family who were in Kiltarlity & Beauly from 1850 onwards. They originally came from nr Garve in Ross-shire, and subsequently they may have dropped the 'Tuach' part of the name. 'Tuach' was the gaelic equivalent of 'McKenzie' Any possible Tuach McKenzie researchers out there ? Many Thanks, Kyle McAllister
