To Bobbie and others I do not pretend to be an expert in land tenure but from stories I have read or heard here is how I understand it went. Before croft tenure was regularised following the Napier Commission land was let for a few years at a time with regular reviews of tenancy. Most times the land would be re-let to the families who had use of it unless they had displeased the head person of the area. There is a tale of the 1600's where the head person was too ill to oversee the lettings and his son took advantage of his power to shift certain families from land they had held for generations to poorer lots. On hearing this, the sick father left his bed wrapped only in a blanket and remonstrated with his son to return the lands to the families who had it previously. From the late 1800's croft land has been passed through the family and could be assigned to your chosen descendant I believe, as it has not always been the oldest son who succeeds, indeed it has sometimes been a daughter and son in ! law.
