    3. Hi list members, I am trying to work out how the tenancy of crofts worked in the old days. I have recently transcribed the 1841 census for Applecross and am now looking at the tenants at Lonbane, Applecross, through the 19th century. Using the 1795 Militia records and the Parish register from 1798 onwards, I have been trying to sort out who lived at Lonbane. Can any one enlighten me about how the tenancy worked? Was it passed down through families? I had assumed that the same families would have stayed in the area but it doesn't seem to have operated quite like that. The families that were there in 1795 seem to have left. The married daughter of one family seems to have stayed but the rest of the tenants/ residents seemed to have changed over several times. The main clearance in Applecross from the better land on the Applecross estate was around 1811 and presumably the number of families swelled from 7 from that time. By 1841 census there were 14 homes at Lonbane. Bobbie
