Scottish gardners were much sought after on English and other European estates, and several went on to some prominence. David Douglas of Scone for instance became a very famous plant collector in the US and Canada (discovering thousands of new species including the Douglas Fir, Sitka Spruce etc). His travels and adventures were extraordinary. Another was George Forrest from Falkirk who brought back from China and Tibet many of the rhododendrons we grown in our gardens. Lachie Munro
