    3. That is not a place in Lochs - in common with Blackpool, which I see as another Place of Birth (I presume). 3. Kate/Catriona - I think Scampeter *must* be in Lewis as there are well over 100 people recorded there in the 1841 census. If you Google for Scampeter you'll see what I mean. And Blackpool has 8 people of two families, and is listed right next to Grigaspool. So I don't think any amusement parks, trams, and illuminations are involved ;-) But.... these places are definitely not all in Lochs! The numbers 534-705 include Carloway and Shawbost! However let's start at the beginning - I think these places may be in some sort of order (please will someone from Lewis who speaks Gaelic come and help out as I really am talking through a hole in my head here - but I am good at using Google and reasonably good with a map). Here are the places in order: Airnish (presumably now spelled Arnish or Airinis) - up on the very northern side of the Loch-covered area, and near Stornoway Kinliniavary (I can't identify this from a map, or from Google, but it was once a sizeable settlement) Raernish (presumably now spelled Ranish or Ranais and presumably related to the geographic features Aird Raerinis and Rudha Raerinis) - now we're clearly down in North Lochs Liverbost (could this be Leurbost?) Scampeter (as yet unidentified) Cuither (there's a Cuidhir right by Ranais on the map) Keose (marked on the OS map as Ceòs) - this is the next road down off the main Stornoway to Harris road Valtos (could this be what is now called Laxay or Lacasaidh as there is a Loch Bhaltois and a Taigh Bhaltois right next to it?) Habost (there's a Tabost - the same as Habost, directly across the loch from Laxay) Kershader (next to Tabost, Cearsiadar on the map) Cavesta (Cabharstadh on the map) Torsta (Torasdaidh on the map) Need I go further - these places are in order - sometimes there are modern places in between which do not seem to be mentioned, sometimes they are just slightly out of the geographical order one might expect from a map, but they are in order - which places Scampeter somewhere near Ranais and Leurbost! Kind regards Peter Reynolds ----- Original Message ----- From: "Catriona Ferris" <kate@globalnet.co.uk> To: <ROSSGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, June 28, 2005 6:25 PM Subject: Re: [RossGen] place name in Lochs > That is not a place in Lochs - in common with Blackpool, which I see as > another Place of Birth (I presume). > Kate > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Joan Cairney" <jocair@lineone.net> > To: <ROSSGEN-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Monday, June 27, 2005 7:46 PM > Subject: [RossGen] place name in Lochs > > >> Hi >> I have been reading an online transcript of the 1841 census for Lochs and >> one of the places mentioned is Scampeter.
