    2. The 'Iolaire' was a double tragedy which some ROSSGEN subscribers may not know about. So many Scottish soldiers were killed in the First World War - about 26% of the total force (compared to 11% of the British Army as a whole), not to mention the wounded, so when it sank within sight of Stornoway, killing those from the islands who had survived, it was the last straw for their families, and it precipitated the last great emigration.
