The name Gustavus became popular in the counties in Northern Scotland after the first Lord Reay, and Munro of Foulis, mustered 2000 men in the area in 1626 and sent them to the continent where they fought with the forces of the King of Denmark and later with the forces of the Swedish King, Gustavus Adolphus. I understand that the Rev Gustavus Aird, a Free Church minister during the second half of the 19th century, had several elders in his congregation called Gustavus so it must have become very popular in that area.
