Does anyone know where I can find information on the 'Monteath" Volunteers or Ross & Cromarty Volunteers? I have checked out the official British Army Site Judy
Judy, I have a book, the Queen's own Highlanders, which is the official book on that regiment - ISBN 0 9508986-2-7. Of course, they are now the Highlanders, since the Gordons amalgamated with them. In the book, the only volunteers mentioned are the rifle volunteers and one of these is the Ross-shire Volunteers 1860-61 and consisted of the following companies - 1st Invergordon; 2nd Dingwall, 3rd Avoch ; 4th Knockbain. All of these were formed in 1860 and in 1861 we had the 5th & 6th Alness Company. In 1861, the 6 original companies were incorporated in the 1st Administrative Batallion, Ross-shirs Rifle Volunteers with its headquarters in Dingwall. In 1864 the whole batallion adopted the same uniform of red tunics and blue trousers, except for No 3 company which chose to wear the Mackenzie kilt. In 1866 & 1867 were added the 7th Evanton, 8th Moy and 9th Gairloch companies. In 1873 the Batallion came under the command of 55 Brigade Depot at Fort George. In 1875 the batallion adopted the new uniform of red doublet and Mackenzie tartan trews except for the 3, 7, 8, 9 Companies whic retained the kilt In 1880, the batallion was consolidated as the 1th Ross-shire (Ross Highland Rifle Volunteerswith its headquarters in Dingwall. After the army reforms of 1881, the Batallion became an integral part of the Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, Duke of Albanys). I hope that is of some help to you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Meibusch" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 3:05 AM Subject: [RossGen] Monteath Volunteers > Does anyone know where I can find information on the 'Monteath" Volunteers or Ross & Cromarty Volunteers? > I have checked out the official British Army Site > Judy > > > ==== ROSSGEN Mailing List ==== > To remove your email address from this list, visit this url: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/maillist.htm >
