Queries. 1. One of my ggg/f was Kenneth Maclean, a "catechist" in Lochbroom in 1843. What exactly was his job? ( Assistant minister, school religious visitor, ???) 2. On his daughter's marriage certificate he "made his mark". I would have thought that, given his apparent education he could at least have written his name. Perhaps he only knew gaelic? 3. One gg/f was Duncan MacKenzie, b1825. He was a "post runner" (postman?)in Lochbroom. 4. Some ancestors, almost certainly MacKenzies, were millers in Lochbroom and Little Lochbroom, some possibly closely connected to 3. Any info. on the above would be appreciated and might also put some leaves on someone else's tree. Regards, Fraser MacKenzie. [email protected]
Hiya Fraser! I'll leave it to others more knowlegable than me to answer your questions re Catechists)... On Sun, 8 Jul 2001 [email protected] wrote: <snip querie 1 and 2> > 3. On my webpage at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coigach I am with the help of many other descendants from the Coigach district of Lochbroom (north-west third of the Parish) transcribing and annotating all the censuses for the area. At the hamlet of Faochag on the tip of Rhu Coigach was a McKenzie family who had a mill there in the late 18th, early 19th century. I was unaware there was a similar family at Little Lochbroom! The family at Faochag was often enumerated as part of the nearby village of Reiff and on my web page you can find in 1841 at Reiff 41-4 and Faochag 41-21 notes that show that as well as being millers, there were "footrunners of post" in the family. The name Duncan is common in that family... Also on the page is a small file that gives a general overview of the history of Faochag. Very much interested to hear if your tree ties in with that one, and if some relationship to the Little Lochbroom MacKenzie family could be shown! All the best from the brink of Niagara, Donald.
