I have not been able to gather much information on Murdo ROSS, my 2X Great Grandfather. His wife appeared as a widow on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 Census returns for Stornoway and Murdo does not appear with Catherine (his wife or widow) and her daughter on the 1841 Census. I have, however, discovered an Alexander ROSS living two doors from the widow of Murdo ROSS on both the 1851 and 1861 Census for Stornoway. I am hoping that perhaps there is a connection and they could have been brothers. Ages would have been right and they were both listed as Seaman, Merchant Service. On the 1851 Census Alexander lists his place of birth as Harris, Inverness and on the 1861 Census as Dunnegan(?), Inverness. Are these two places close together? Another indication that perhaps they could have been brothers is that on a copy of the death extract for a child born to my Gr.Grandmother, the informant was listed as Henrietta Ross, Aunt. Henrietta appears as a daughter of Alexander ROSS on the Census returns. The relationship of Aunt would not be correct, but they could certainly be related. I have a copy of the death extract for Alexander ROSS giving his parents names as Donald ROSS, Crofter, and Isabella ROSS, maiden name MACLEOD. Any input would be most appreciated as to the place of birth of Alexander and also the possibility of there being a connection between the two families. Thank you.
