In all photos of my great grandmother she is wearing a mutch- a goffered cap. No other women in the pictures do so. What is the origin of this headgear and why would she wear it. I searched Cyndi's list but no luck. tia Shane in Cairo

A search on "widow's mutch" brought up a reference in "A Retrospective Introduction to the Standard Edition of The Scottish Chiefs" and the following quote: "...venerable ladies...coifed in milk-white mutch...noble widows.."
