I am interested in hearing from anyone who recognises Jessie MURRAY born about 1833, in Stornoway. On the 1881 census she is in Salford as Jessie SMITH with children George 17, Margaret 14 and Jessie 7. There should also be Isabella aged about 12. Family legend says that she and her husband, George, were forced to move from the island in disgrace. They married (in England?) and changed their name to SMITH. The legend also has Jessie as a parlour maid and George as the son of the house. The legend has more details but it would be helpful if I could confirm the existence of Jessie in Stornoway first.
