Hazel, I did a search in the site www.pro.gov.uk and found this description - "Plea roll. A parchment roll recording details of legal suits or actions in a court of law." If this is the case I am sure you will be able to find out more from court records. It is good to have criminal ancestors :) There was also something about plea roll portraits but the first is probably what you want. Have a look on the site for yourself to make sure.
