Today I have received a letter from Australia dictated by his son who must in his 80's or 90's. Donald Burns was the son of Margaret Maclennan and seems to be shown as being her son on the 1881 Census but as Donald Maclennan. The letter tells me that " he went to Australia in about 1855 under a scheme to young people from England,Scotland and Ireland "with sixpence in his pocket" the letter goes on to tell me that the ship had Sail And Steam and landed at Port Mackay which was an all Scottish settlement." Donald had a long life and 11 children in Australia. I would be interested in any information on shipping lists for this scheme or Passenger lists etc. Iain [email protected]
