Hello! I am trying to track down the death certificate for James Aird, born around 1830 or so in the Rosskeen area. While checking the Civil Registration Index at my local Family History Centre I came across a James Aird who died in 1901 (this fits the bill!) but the location is listed as "Plantation". Does anyone know where this might be? Thanks for any help. Hi Phillip Yes, I think I can finally help someone as I was very recently looking for Plantation myself. These are some replies I had. I am sure you will find your answer here as I got this all from the helpful people on this List. Good Luck Lorraine Ottawa, Canada Plantation is part of the Govan area of Glasgow. It was called Plantation because the lands of that area were purchased by a Mr. John Robertson, a Glasgow merchant, who purchased the estate in 1783. He owned several sugar and cotton plantations in the West Indies, hence the name "Plantation" for his new aquisition. The northern boundary of the estate was the River Clyde, the southern was the Paisley canal, to the east was the land of Park House and to the west, the lands of Bellahouston. Many Lewis people moved to Govan and became involved in the shipbuilding and engineering which the Govan area was once famous for, including my grandfather. All that, however, is now gone. I think that Govan is a very likely candidate - many Stornoway people moved to Govan, including several families of my Mackenzie descendants. Plantation was a "quoad sacra" parish and I've forgotten what that means!! Plantation is listed in the Scottish Origins file as a registration District in the Glasgow area. I have a book on the History of Govan. It states that the Parish boundary extended to the North side of the river Clyde as well as the South side. The boundary line followed the River Kelvin to Maryhill in the North, and included Whiteinch, Partick, Dowanhill, Hillhead, and Kelvinside. Glasgow University used to be in Govan parish. On the South side of the river Clyde it embraced the districts of Goven, Ibrox, PLANTATION, Kinning Park, Hutchesontown, Laurieston, Tradeston, Crosshill, Gorbals, Govanhill East and West Pollokshields, Strathbungo and Dumbreck. The Parish extended to Jenny's Burn at Polmadie in the east and to Dean Park at Renfrew in the west. In 1800, the parish was purely agricultural and had a population of 4389. I can in fact confirm that there are still old school buildings on the North side of the river which have "Govan Parish School Board " inscribed on them. Plantation Registration District was only in operation from 1882-1934, so if most of your events are earlier it would not appear. Before 1882 events in that area would probably have been registered under Govan. It does not appear in the IGI. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Phillip Aird" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: 08 December, 2001 20:33 Subject: [RossGen] Plantation? > Hello! > I am trying to track down the death certificate for > James Aird, born around 1830 or so in the Rosskeen > area.
