    3. Hi Again Can anyone tell me how I find a OPR for the early 1800's? Do I have to write to a specific place? Also if I am looking for OPR's for Edderton and Tain area's, do I have to have specific church names? Thanks Again ________________________________________________________________ Nokia 5510 looks weird sounds great. Go to http://uk.promotions.yahoo.com/nokia/ discover and win it! 3. I can't speak for Edderton, but here is some background on Tain OPRs: Films of Tain OPRs are available at LDS Family History Centers. The parish records begin in 1701 and extend to 1855, when the responsibility for the registration of births, marriages, and deaths was taken over by the civil authorities of Scotland. Birth records began in the parish of Tain in 1719, marriage records in 1808. The records for the parish from 1701 to 1727 are in poor condition, the edges are worn away, the ink bleeds through the pages, and there appears to be some water damage. These factors, and the age of the microfilm to which the records have been transferred, make these early records very difficult to read. The very poorest of the parish may not have had their births, deaths and marriages listed in the parochial registers. This had to do with the fees charged by the church for these functions. From the November 1995 issue of the Highland Family History Society Journal p. 21: "At Cromarty the 19th April 1808, We, the Committee appointed for drawing up a Table of Fees to be charged by Session Clerks & Church Officers within the bounds of the Synod gave in their report; which being read & considered was approved of, and the Synod in terms of it ordain. That the fees for a Marriage when both parties are resident in the Parish shall be five shillings sterling; but when only one party is resident, three shillings. For Baptism, one shilling. For writing a Certificate of Character one shilling and six pence. For an extract from the Register of Births or Marriage one shilling. For digging a grave & bell for an adult person three shilling. For digging a grave and bell for a person under twelve years one shilling and sixpence." /s/ Hugh Ross, Synod Clerk, Parish Edderton, Ross-shire Missing Records There is a gap in the birth records from 1727 to 1767. I am uncertain how much of these missing records were destroyed, missing, or never transferred to microfilm. With the thoroughness of the LDS genealogists, I assume that for the most part the records do not exist. In fact, the Statistical Account of Scotland (1837) has this to say about the parish records: "There are no trustworthy parochial registers now extant, of a date beyond 1765; at which period we find it recorded that general discontent has been raised by the total want of any registration for nine years before; since that time (except that there is no record of deaths) they have been tolerably well kept." This hole in the records makes doing research in Tain for this period very difficult, and is wide enough to make it nearly impossible to link the individuals on the two ends of the gap. Death records were not required to be kept in the parish until 1784, when a tax on burials was instituted. As it turns out, very few burial records exist in all rural areas of Scotland before 1855. I have been unable to find any of these burial records, save surveys of two burial grounds in the town of Tain. The local museum "Tain Through Time" is aware of an effort, currently underway, to catalog headstones in the area. Andy Airriess

    3. Has anybody else noticed the delay in the mail recently? I sent the OPR email out a few hours ago and I just now recieved my copy. This seems to be happening on other mailing lists as well.
