    2. Hello all, pressures of work have kept me from much genealogy over the last year, giving me a large file of unanswered emails, sigh... but took a stab yesterday at a few files on my webpage which includes annotated transcriptions of most of the 19th century Coigach censuses... see http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coigach Lochbroom OPR has 12 March 1830 Hector MacKenzie Isle Ristol married to Jannet McDonald, Reiff. My own ancestors included the Reiff MacDonald family, and I always felt Janet was likely a sister of my gt-gt-grandfather, Donald McDonald, child of John MacDonald and Ketty ("Catherine") MacLeod. Hector and Janet with three children were I think in the 1841 census close to Ristol at Polbain 41-5 (transcription on webpage), and missing after that, always thought they probably emigrated.... Found on the IGI and the other on-line Mormon databases two more children, born Lochbroom 1842 and 1844, then the family looks to have moved to Balintore Fearn, I have yet to consult 1851 and later censuses for there.... Hector seems to have died at Balintore, Fearn, 1890, and Janet there 1885. his parents as Roderick and Margaret (m.s. also MacKenzie), and hers as John MacDonald and Ann m.s. MacLeod (forename of Ann does not agree with "my" John's wife Ketty,... probably a mistake by the Informant) Submitted info in the Mormon site follows descent of Hector and Janet's first child Murdoch (born 1831-2 Lochbroom, died 21 April 1912 at Balintore). Ten children are listed born at Balintore from 1855 to 1874 to Murdo and his wife Davidina Ross. Second child of Murdo and Davidina was another Hector, born 1857 at Balintore, married 1885 at Tain to Catherine Urquhart (b. Nigg) with three named children from 1885 to 1891, first two at Broomhill Kilmuir-Easter, third at Balvaird, Urquhart. Death of Catherine 1903 at Broomhill, Hector 1922 at Balvaird. From Broomhill the family seems to have drifted to Invergordon, Hector's first child Murdoch married Rosanna Ball and had five children there, and his brother David died there 1957. Murdo and Rosanna's children all born Invergordon, death dates but not places listed, were; Catharine, b.1905, d.10 October 1989 Janet, b.1906, d.30 May 1927 Murdo, b.July 1912, d.1 January 1933 David, b.14 February 1987 Hector, b.22 January 1916, died 14 May 1989 All the best from the brink of Niagara, Donald. 1. Ross (Mountain) Battery - The Great War
    2. Mike Morrison
    3. Hello Listers, In an effort to pursue my family history, I have met a good many people, both in person and through the (e)mails who have a common interest in my grandfather's World War One military unit. This Territorial Force unit, the 4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade consisted of the Bute Battery, the Argyll Battery and the Ross & Cromarty Battery. It was a local Territorial Force unit created in 1908 as a "mountain" artillery unit, a part of the 51st (Highland) Division Artillery. Most of the Brigade fought in Gallipoli and was the first artillery on the beaches in the first landing on Helles Point and the subsequent landing at Suvla Bay. They literally wore their guns out on Gallipoli and, true to their martial traditions, manhandled their guns up cliffs and hills that their animals weren't able to in order to provide fire support for the Allied forces. At one point in the Suvla Bay landing, the Ross Battery was 1-1/2 miles ahead of the front line (so they were the front line!) following their earlier directive to set up in this spot. They then went to Egypt, training and participating in minor actions there and then on to Salonika where they performed feats of firepower and mobility that rated special mention in official and unofficial histories. My contacts with other descendants of this group and the remarkable Commander Ian Hamilton of Rothesay have led to the unavoidable decision to chronicle the Brigade in a book. Commander Hamilton has agreed to collaborate and has done wonderful research already in this regard. This will be about the officers and men of the Highlands & Islands who manned these batteries so well. I have collected several stories from descendants so far and hope to collect a good many more. I am also looking for lists, articles, diaries and anecdotes about the Brigade and it's men. This is not intended to be a commercial venture. I have begun it because it hasn't been done. I've seen many histories of other units in the Great War and several small articles and parts of books have been written about the brigade including a piece in The Sword of the North by Rev. Dugald McEchern, yet there is no dedicated history of the 4th Highland (Mountain) Brigade. If it is published commercially all the better, but it will be published one way or the other as it is a story that needs to be memorialized. Send me whatever you have (even just encouragement!). Give me your views, just let me know that you have a relative who served with the Brigade. I will keep it all. Thanks, Mike Morrison

Can anyone advise if there are transcriptions of the 1841 and 1851 census returns of Lochalsh Parish, and where these might be available? David Thompson London, Canada

    3. 1. Donald Ross: Born 9/23/1859, Fordoun Parish, Kincardine; died 5/15/1899, Darjeeling, West Bengal, India. Married Jessie Hollis 12/31/1883, Lochee, Dundee, Angus. Children/birth dates: Mary Jane (1886), Jesse Hollis (1888), Magdeline Carne (1890), Dorothy Georgina (or Georgina Towns) (1893/1894), Elizabeth Blackburn (1895), Margaret (Unknown). He was a jute mill overseer in Dundee before going to India, where he was employed as a batching foreman. From scottishdocuments.com, I have information on the disposition of his estate signed by the Dundee Sheriff Court. 2. Georgina Ross: a. My grandmother Dorothy Georgina Ross, per family information, was born 6/17/1894 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Donald and Jessie Hollis Ross, and died 12/7/1964, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. b. From scotlandspeople.gov.uk, I have a birth record naming Georgina Towns Ross, born 6/19/1893 at 14 Ross (or Rose) Street, Lochee, Dundee, to Donald Ross and Jessie Hollis. 3. Conclusions/Questions: a. I have 1891 census information on Donald Ross and his family. Where would I find any other information on Donald Ross after 1891? b. Donald's daughters Mary Jane and Jesse Hollis Ross were in the 1901 Winnipeg, Manitoba, census as servants, but I could not locate their mother Jessie Ross or any other siblings in that census. I used the 1901 Angus and Wigtonshire (where Jessie was born and her family lived) census on scotlandspeople.gov.uk, but I couldn't locate Donald's wife Jessie or any of their other children. I have searched some internet passenger lists for the family, thinking they emigrated to Canada, after 1891, but have found nothing so far. Where else could I look to find them? b. There are no Manitoba birth records for Dorothy Georgina Ross. In the 1930 Detroit, Michigan, census, she was living with my grandfather Charles David Rock, who she married before 1916. There, she states she was born in Canada. If Dorothy Georgina Ross and Georgina Towns Ross are the same person, it's obvious she arrived in Canada from Scotland at some point. What else can I do to find more information on her birth or on her arrival in Canada? Thanks for your suggestions.

    1. McRae of Kintail
    2. ross barrett
    3. Hi - my great grandmother was Marion MacRae (bJan15,1836) in Harris, Inverness to John McRae and Catherine Urquhart. John and Catherine show up in the 1851 census of Nishishee. John is indicated as being 40 at the time and born in Rossshire, Kintail and Catherine (his wife) as being born in Gairloch and 28 at the time. I have not been able to find out any more about John McRae - if he was a shepherd then I wonder if he and his family would be listed somewhere? According to the death record for Catherine Urquhart - she died Aug26,1897 and was the widow of John McRae - a shepherd. Her father was Donald Urquhart (a cattle drover - and her mother was Margaret Urquhart (nee Urquhart). John and Catherine (Cathrine) had at least ten children according to the IGI including my ggrandmother Marion who married William Dingwall and died in Glasgow and Annie (born March 16,1843) who came to Sydney Cape Breton with her husband Daniel Poushay and died here. I would love to know more about the children of John and Catherine and also the parents of John McRae. Any help would be most welcome. Regards from Cape Breton - Valerie Dingwall Barrett. The furthest back that I have got so far is my 3 x Great Grandparents - Farquhar and Catherine McRae. I have a possible father for Farquhar - Duncan - but am not certain. Farquhar was born in Rurach ?, Kintail about 1791. They had a son, Ewen born 20/2/1828 in Kintail. According to the 1851 Census, their children - Mary, Duncan, Ewen, John, Jane, Thomas and Donald were all born in Kintail but by this time they were living on Camusunary Farm, Inverness. Ewen married Jessie McRae in Kintail on 1/3/1860. Her parents were Malcolm and Mary McRae who married in Kintail on 11/6/1839 at Kintail. Ewen and Jessie's son, Farquhar (my great grandfather) was born 21/4/1860 in Glensheil but the rest of their children (Flora, Alexander, John, Ann, Peter, Donald, Bella and Helen were all born in Kilmonivaig, Inverness. 3. Hello All As a young girl in the late 1920's and early 30's my mother and her parents returned to live in Glasgow. Her maternal grandparents were Donald McINTYRE from Fort William and Margaret ROSS from Alness and my mother spent a fair amount of time around Alness visiting relatives and a great help with my family research. In 1967 we as a family spent a night in Fort William whilst touring Scotland and the experience has stayed with my mother. Well she is now 81 and a few weeks ago saw an advertisment for a tour leaving from London, travelling along the west coast of Scotland to Fort William and the Isle of Skye (where she has always wanted to go) and back down the east coast.Although I was asked to go,it has ended up that my daugthter- in-law has accompanied her. 3. Hello, This is my first time on the list so apologies in advance for any breaches of general etiquette!. I'm searching back my wifes history and looking for details on Alexander THAYNE(b around 1761). I believe he married Isobel HOOD. His son's (Donald) birth, marriage and death certificates all quote Tain as the place name. Is this in the Ross & Cromarty area? I was born in England and live in Australia so I'm a bit unfamiliar with the territory. His son Donald lived 1787 to 1860. I haven't been able to find any details on the census so far - any feedback would be great if possible. Any hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Phil Taylor Sydney, Australia
