Afraid not that particular Matheson family - but if Kenneth had a brother Murdoch Matheson, who married a Mary Matheson - and had a son Dugald, who ended up on the Isle Tanera Mor - I'd love to know! I just cannot get there whereabouts (1750-1800 ish). Nope, that was Kyle of Lochalsh, just west of it. Kyle of Lochalsh is still a railway terminal (from Inverness), but the ferry was abolished when the road bridge was built. That was where the contoversy lay, to get to Skye you could only use the bridge, and you had to pay the toll, which the locals, and people of Skye thought was grossly unfair. Lachie
Lachie: Would Plockton have been the likely location of the car ferry my wife and I took in 1982 to Skye, or would there have been several operating at the time? Plockton is on the north side of the Loch Alsh peninsula. Kyle is the town on the south side of the peninsula that had the ferry to Skye when I made the crossing in 1979. In 1999, I was fortunate to spend a week in Plockton. It is a lovely town. I hope to visit again. By the way, is anyone researching a Kenneth Matheson, who could be described as a "merchant" in Plockton between 1750 and 1800, and had a daughter named Mary born about1787. Marleen Van Horne

Hi there Wrong! I've been on the Isle of Lewis since 1988 and the most that happens is no alcohol is sold on a communion day (in shops that is!). Other than that, the shelves empty the day before and an orgy of eating and entertaining is carried out (presumably before and after going to church several times). Hope this helps you Kate ----- Original Message ----- From: "Torquil Productions" <torquil@bmts.com> To: <ROSSGEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, January 09, 2005 6:48 PM Subject: [RossGen] Off Topic Sacrament weekends in the Western Isles > Hello List, > > > > I know this is off topic but I was wondering if someone could tell me if > schools, shops and bars still close from Thursday on for Sacrament weekends > in the Western Isles? > > I believe this practice was still being observed in the late 1990's. > > > > Thank you in advance. > > > > Angus Macleod > > > > PS I will try to make my future postings on topic and please accept my > apology if this question is inappropriate for this list. > > > > > > ==== ROSSGEN Mailing List ==== > To remove your email address from this list, visit this url: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/maillist.htm > > >
An even more off-topic footnote. I once walked from Stornoway (in Lewis for our friends overseas) to Callanish on a walking tour of the Western Isles. Outside the town, for a couple of miles, on either side of the road, were thousands upon thousands of empty whisky (half) bottles which had been tossed out of passing cars. It was an amazing sight - a solid glass super-highway. Recycling had obviously not caught on, but I had the feeling that the drivers were getting rid of the evidence. Lachie
Hello List, I know this is off topic but I was wondering if someone could tell me if schools, shops and bars still close from Thursday on for Sacrament weekends in the Western Isles? I believe this practice was still being observed in the late 1990's. Thank you in advance. Angus Macleod PS I will try to make my future postings on topic and please accept my apology if this question is inappropriate for this list.
Thank you to Lilian, Alistair & Tina for your replies. Helen Mcculloch was born in Urray. in the 1841 census it looks like the family was scattered all over place. Now Helen left Liverpool on the St Helena to Australia. On the record she is listed as single female, genl servant from Anagh ROC. Now they got the ROC right. But with all the illiteracy & maybe Helen's accent they have spelt the place wrong & apparently Helen could read but not write. Probably couldn't spell either. Thank you again. Urray is in Easter Ross, a couple of miles in land from the Cromarty Firth in SW direction. Achetirson and Anagh do not appear on my map. Are they spelled correctly? Try looking for Ordnance Survey maps in a search engine, you can call up Urray to see places near by.

Sorry I didn't get back to you straight away. On her death certificate it appears her parents names were Hector & Margaret.. She was born around 1828 in Ross-shire. According to the New South Wales govt immigrant index 1844 - 1859, she arrived in Australia in 1854 on the St Helena as an assisted passenger. It quotes her age as 30 and makes no mention of any family travelling with her like the other passengers travelling on the same ship. She married Janes Desborough Hinton in 1856. He travelled out from Lincolnshire in England. They had four children that I know of Elizabeth, Margaret, Hector & James. That's all I know, Gordon. She was my great great grandmother. Hi I'm looking for info on my 2nd great-grandmother's family. Her parents' names were WILLIAM SCARLETT and MARGARET MURRAY. Siblings - all born in Stornoway - that I've found so far are: Norman Scarlett, born June 28, 1823 Annabell Scarlett, born August 2, 1824 Anne Scarlett, born May 14, 1828 Margaret Scarlett, born June 7, 1830 (my 2nd great grandmother) Norman Murray Scarlett, born June 7, 1833 Margaret Scarlett married James Milroy in Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia in December, 1863, and then they travelled together on the S. S. Great Victoria to Kirkcudbright where they lived until he died in 1901. Both the Assisted Immigration to Victoria list and the Unassisted Immigration list give the same details for a Margaret Scarlett: SCARLETT MARGARET 28 SEP 1860 WANATA 13 741 SCARLETT MARGARET 28 SEP 1860 WANATA 13A 92 Is anyone else researching Scarletts from that area?
Hi Lawrence Sorry, Lawrence I hit the 9 instead of the 8 and the same with the 5 & the 4. I sometimes type the vowels back to front. Anyway have now retyped it! Thank you for your patience. Trying to find any information on Helen McCulloch born around 1828 in Ross-shire. According to the NSW government immigration records she came to Australia in 1854 on the St Helena as an assisted passenger. It doesn't say whether she travelled alone or with her family. She married my great great grandfather James Desborough Hinton in NSW Australia in 1856. Her parents names may have been Hector & Margaret. Any information on her would be very much appreciated. Jane, I think it highly unlikely he was cleared given he had a ticket from Leith and a Letter of Introduction from the Parish Minister. More likely he was like most people, an economic migrant. My gr. Gr grandfather James Campbell came out from Portree in 1835 to Tasmania, Australia. I have a copy of a ticket issued for his trip from Leith to Hobart Town and a copy of a reference from the Portree manse dated the 16.8.1835, where he had been living for the previous five years. His father Robert Campbell according to his sisters death certificate (Anne Campbell/Stewart) was a farmer. James was born in Fortingall 8th May 1804 to Robert Campbell and Jean Cameron. My query is could he have been part of the highland clearances? And is there any information as to who emigrated, as I am curious to find out who paid £21.00 for his trip to Tasmania on a Cargo ship, North Briton. I have ordered the book from our library on the highland clearances, but as it is a small library I have to wait a couple of weeks for it to come in from the state library.
