    3. Hi Don if you go to http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctroc there is a map there, but it doesn't show Avoch but has some interesting reading about the areas. I do have a small map I can send you by attachment if you would like. My Gr. Grandmother was born in Avoch. 3. Avoch is north of Inverness, on the northern shore of the Moray Firth. It is on the land mass known as the Black Isle which sits between the Moray Firth, to its south, and the Cromarty Firth to its north. East Coast of Scotland. Lochs, I think, belongs to the Isle of Lewis, not a place but an area or parish name. Have just looked at Parloc and found two Lochs. 1st is in Ross and Cromarty, OS ref. NB which is Lewis. 2nd Moray, OS ref. NJ which is the area of the Grampian Mountains, north side. Head east from Loch Ness or west from Aberdeen. Hope that helps. Can recommend Parloc, came free on a magazine, probably downloadable. Tina

    3. I am certainly interested in your/ANY Dugald Mathesons around! OK Well, around 1790-1800 and before, as he was surely named after some ancestor. My Dugald appeared on Isle Tanera mor in the early 1800s. My Dugald married Catherine Maclean 22 Dec 1825, Lochbroom parish. 3. Plockton is covered, I suggest Stroma could be Strome which is a short boat trip from Plockton, at the narrow entrance to Loch Carron, north side. Cardanach and Ardmachin ring no bells. The only Ard.... name near is Ardaneaskan, on the point of land north east from Plockton. Is the lister struggling to read the parish register or is it a transcript that someone not familiar with the local names has interpreted? Tina

    1. Mathieson semi-scandle
    2. Marleen Van Horne
    3. Well, I thought I would liven things up a bit. In the 1850 US census, my gg-grandfather, Robert Mathieson, was listed as having two son, George D. Mathieson, aged 3, and Kenneth Mathieson. aged 1. Robert Mathieson died in 1857, two more sons were added to the family in 1854, Robert Bruce Mathieson, and in 1857, Justice Mathieson. In the 1860 census, Robert's widow, Ann Wood, is listed with her sons, George D. Mathieson, aged 13, Richard Wood Mathieson, aged 11, Robert Bruce Mathieson, aged 6, and Justice Mathieson, aged 3. So the question is, why was Kenneth's name changed to Richard Wood, and was George baptized George Donald, or was he really baptized George Duncan Mathieson, after his two grandfather, George Wood and Duncan Mathieson. I recently found the estate documents for Robert's death. In these documents it states there is a loan, and it is not clear whether the loan was made to Robert by his brother, Kenneth, or whether Robert loaned the money to his brother, Kenneth. Which ever way it went, something must have happened over this transaction that caused Ann to definately change the name of her second son and possibly even the first son. We did not have any Donalds in our ancestry, only Dugalds and Duncans. Isn't genealogy fun. Marleen Van Horne

    3. m researching the Bain, Greig and MacKenzie families which originate from either Lochcarron or Lochalsh, although Applecross does feature breifly in the family history. My website covering the above families has further information. Take a look at http://cmahoney.orcon.net.nz and follow the Scotland link near the top of the page. I would be interested in knowing more about these families and/or finding someone who is connected.

    3. Hi Marleen, I suspect a problem with the timeframe of your Kenneth Matheson, merchant in Plockton c1750-1800. I learned from Dr Iain Matheson, a Plockton resident and researcher of both local and Clan Matheson histories, that Plockton first came into existence in 1804. Apparently the site was first surveyed in 1794 by the British Fishery Society, which had earlier established the village of Ullapool, but the absence of fresh water on the promontory delayed the start of settlement. It was only in 1804, after water supplies had been secured, that the village was laid out. There may have been some minimal settlement prior to 1804, given the safe east-facing harbour, but the absence of a spring must have made a village out of the question, and the absence of a village makes the occupation of merchant highly unlikely. The gaelic name for the promontory was An Ploc, hence the anglicisation to Plockton from 1804 onwards, but before that there was no Plockton. The oral history of my family talks of a forebear from Plockton, but my research shows that he was in Easter Ross by 1794 and in Glasgow by 1804, so it's unlikely that he had ever come from Plockton. The name normally used for the entire district in those days was the parish name of Lochalsh. If your Kenneth was really from Plockton, it suggest that the timeframe should be post-1804, but if the 1750-1800 timerame is correct, maybe you need to look wider in the Lochalsh area.
