    1. ROSS family of Little Tarrel
    2. Jenny bakken
    3. I want to thank all you good people that wrote to me with so much info regarding the above 'subject'. I gained alot of info and I thank you all very much. One more request, does anyone know of the book named, History of the Clan Ross, by Alexander M Ross. I understand it is full of genealogies of various Ross families. It is a hard book to find and is quite expensive. I see where there is a CD-ROM of the book for $12.95 U.S. I am especially looking for the descendents of Alexander, 6th of Little Tarrel who was married to Margaret Munroe, daughter of Alex Munroe. Thanks again, Jenny

    3. Dear Jenny, If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk, and type in Tarrel as a place, you will be taken to a map which shows Tarrel and Balnagown castle. "Tarbet" is also mentioned on the same map - I don't know of a Torbet , but there are several Tarberts - do you know where in Scotland it was? I don't know for certain that Little Tarrel is the same place exactly as Tarrel - just a thought. In a place name reference book there is a reference to " Big Tarrel and Little Tarrel and Tarrel under the rock" - but unhelpfully it doesn't say if they were places near each other, although the only Tarrel it gives as a place is in Ross, so it is likely. If I come across more information, I'll pass it on! Hope this is helpful Janice On Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at 02:00 PM, ROSSGEN-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > ROSSGEN-D Digest Volume 05 : Issue 61 > > Today's Topics: > #1 Little Tarrel ["Jenny bakken" > <jennyb@ocis.net>] > #2 unsubscribe ["Jane & David Gow" > <jane_david@cei] > > Administrivia: > To unsubscribe from ROSSGEN-D, send a message to > > ROSSGEN-D-request@rootsweb.com > > that contains in the body of the message the command > > unsubscribe > > and no other text. 3. Hi: I have just obtained a pedigree of the Ross family starting with Malcolm Ross, 1st Earl in the 1100's. It was done by a relative in 1910 and works its way down to us in Canada. We are descended down through Hugh of Raridies, then on to Alexander Ross 1st Chief of Little Tarrel, and down and down. Many dates are missing, but it is very interesting to read, it really requires alot of study. I wonder if someone out there would tell me where Little Tarrel is? I know it is in Ross Cromarty, and that is all. How far away is Little Tarrel from Balnagown Castle? I have a notation regarding a tombstone in TORBET CHURCH. Is this spelt right and where is Torbet? Thank for anyones help, Jenny

    3. I am researching McDonalds at Killearnan. My husband's great grandfather Thomas was born in Killearnan in 1839, son of Donald and Elizabeth McDonald (of Tore). He had a brother Alexander, born in 1837. I also have a friend in California whose grandfather, Donald McDonald, was born in Killearnan in 1869, son of Alexander McDonald and Catherine Dallas (married at Quarry of Redcastle). This Alexander was the son of Donald McDonald and Jane McDonald. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has similar interests. Janice MacDonald

I've tried to order church records for Black Isle but I am getting no where. Does anyone do census look ups? I need one for 1841 for Thomas to see if I can locate what parish he is in. 3. Can anyone suggest where I might find information about a relation who was a doctor practicing medicine in Scotland in the latter half of the 1800s? He is John Gallie Fraser MB ChB, LRCP (c1867-1925) He is from the area of Nigg (near Tain) Ross & Cromarty. He appears in the 1891 cencus for Nigg as living with his family at Easter Rarichie Farm (Nigg), died 16 Dec 1925 at Leigh on Sea, Essex, and is buried at the Old Nigg Churchyard. My question is how might I trace any information to do with his medical studies.what college, when etc. Thank you from Canada. Wilmer Fawcett

    3. Unfortunately the parents of a couple marrying are seldom recorded before statutory registration began. You may be lucky if the recorder added a qualifier of a by name and sometimes the brides father is given or the place of her family but otherwise the detail of the previous generation is not often there. Don't give up though, Tina

    2. Recent news item in The Scotsman, dated 26th of April, that might be of interest to a few subscribers: "A historic Celtic hero credited with driving the Vikings out of Western Scotland was actually descended from a Norseman, according to research by a leading DNA expert. According to traditional genealogies, Somerled, who is said to have died in 1164 after ousting the Vikings from Argyll, Kintyre and the Western Isles, was descended from an ancient royal line going back to when the Scots were living in Ireland. But Bryan Sykes, an Oxford University professor of human genetics has discovered that Somerled's Y-chromosone - which is inherited through the male line - is of Norse origin. Prof Sykes studies of three Scottish clans have also led to the conclusion that 500,000 people alive today are descended from Somerled - a number only bettered by Genghis Khan, who among historical figures studied to date, has an estimated 16 million descendants. The MacDonald, MacDougall, and MacAllister clans all claim descent from Somerled and Prof Sykes found that between 25 and 45 per cent of them shared the same Y-chromosone, of a kind normally found in Norway but rare in Scotland and Ireland. By analysing the rate of multiplication in DNA samples from clan members, Prof Sykes was able to show that the Y-chromosone came from a common ancestor who lived roughly 1,000 years ago. He then tested 5 chiefs from the clans and discovered they all shared the same chromosone, which convinced him that the common ancestor must be Somerled, Lord of the Isles, in keeping with clan histories.

    1. Re Conan House grave yard
    2. I was interested to read of your find. My great-grandmother was the last person to be buried there and they had to carry the coffin all the way to the the grave yard as you say there is not access for vehicles. I was there a few years back to lay flowers and found it a moving experience, the friends who took me to the grave yard put a piece in the local paper it read as follows "On one of those glorious summer evenings last week we set out to find an old, unused cemetery near Conon Bridge. Quite by chance and more by good luck than judgement, I found a path near the main road, not a mile from Conan, taking us along beside the River Conon, and after about half a mile and two false trails we came across the cemetery. It is surrounded by an iron fence and two iron gates lying ajar. We went in and after searching, came across the stone and the inscription we were looking for. It is one of the most recent headstones in what is an overgrown piece of land in a most idyllic surrounding. The forest is gradually taking possession and in another 50 years or so may well obliterate the place altogether. There are perhaps 50 or so graves and although some of the headstones have fallen down, and thereare others where the inscriptions have faded rather badly, there are quite a few still legible and one can read of people who died in South Africa, in Perth (Scotland or Australia?) and one of a man killed on the railway line near Bonar Bridge, could it have been during the construction of the Highland line to Wick and Thurso? The dates are very difficult to decipher, but I imagine they go as far back as the beginning of the last century (1800s), the most recent being just before the last war, in the thirties. There were quite a few Mackenzies, mackays, Patersons etc on the headstones, and mostly from the Muir of Ord/Conon Bridge area, and others from the Black Isle. I found the evening very worthwhile and enjoyable. Standing there in the evening sunlight one could imagine how horse drawn hearses would have conveyed the deceased to their last resting places, and with only the noise of the River Conon nearby and the singing of the birds for company, funerals in those far of days may not have been such sad affairs." My great-grandparents were George Mackenzie and Donaldina Paterson. I have been there twice and if I lived nearer would love to transcribe the stones. I hope this is of some interest. Thank you Ann Roots

    1. Graveyard at Conan House
    2. Peter Reynolds
    3. We found an interesting graveyard while out walking today - near Conan House, Conon Bridge. I don't know anything about researching gravestones, but I was interested at finding a graveyard covering quite a long period, with no obvious vehicular access, and with several species of wild flowers in bloom. Legible gravestones of which I took photographs include * Thomas, Hugh Fraser, and Eleanor Shaw - children who died 1882 * K J Ramsey MacLennan, OBE, died 1988 * Isabella and Kenneth MacLennan, children who died 1849 * Christopher MacDonald, Deputy Commissary of Ordinance (sic), Calcutta, died 1850 Anyone wishing to see these and other pics of the graveyard, please email me. Kind regards Peter Reynolds www.peterreynoldsbooks.co.uk

    3. Hi Wilmer, Since you know the parish where the marriage took place, you might want to check the parish registers. Many of the parish registers have been photo-copied and are available from various sources such as the Family History Center, and of course, other sources.
