Hello listers, Is there someone on the list who has the 1881 census disks that can do a lookup for me? (I have them but my CD drive has died). After spending the evening on Scotlandspeople I've finally found the death certificate for my gr-gr-grandmother Ann McKenzie m/s McLean. She died in November 1880 in the District of Kinlochluichart. In the column for "Where died" it states Gorstan of Garve, Parish of Contin. I'm looking for at least an Alexander Mac/McKenzie about 55 yrs old (he was the informant - eldest son) and perhaps Ann(ies) other children Christina & Janet (twins) about 49 Ann 38, Murdo 33 I've not found marriages for any of them so far (but I've been looking in Contin not Kinlochluichart !) Thank you, Win MacKenzie
G'day All, Must apologise as I mistake the word "videos" in the site address, so if you try the one below, it works: http://disneyvideos.disney.go.com/moviefinder/products/0030103.html Thanks to those who pointed out my mistake. I've got a jigsaw puzzle of the battle scene form this movie that I've had since I was about 5 years old. Just for your information Greg, there's a scene in that film (shot behind Callander) where you can see a bus in the distance, kinda like the car in the recent Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring. Disney have recently released their 1959 version of the Scottish novel 'Kidnapped' on DVD starring Peter Finch (Aussie actor), and Russ Tamblin ("book-'im Danno!!") and it's certainly the most faithful adaptation on film. They've recently been releasing some of their live-action back-catalogue, so Rob Roy might not be far behind. Please let me know if you get any more news. Hi all. My very first message. Trying to find descendants of Donald Ross born approximately 1785 (of Balblair, Edderton, Tain area, Ross and Cromarty), wife Annie, son Andrew 1805-1886, whose son George migrated to Australia in 1865 (1840-1918) - our direct ancestor. George had siblings, Annie (b1832), Alexander (b1835) and Hugh (1838-1912) who married Margaret McKay. Most entries in Census, Scotlandspeople and on LDS site indicate they did not move far from the area of Edderton or Tain, Scotland. We plan to travel to the area and hope that long lost relatives are still there. Thanks. Helen Ross Adelaide, South Australia
Miranda Search http://uk.multimap.com for IV10 8SH and zoom in/out. This shows an Ordhill whose current postal address is Fortrose, but it is only 2½ miles from Avoch too. There is another Ord Hill near Kilmuir/North Kessock (IV1 3XG or thereabouts) but less sign of a settlement there and nearly 8 miles from Avoch. Jean Bill I have just notice an answer to your email which made me look at it. My wife's ancestors was one Roderick McLennan born around 1831 in Redcastle, he married Elizabeth Stewart in 1852 and migrated to Victoria, Australia where he was killed in an accident. Would there be any connection even with the different spelling of the surname. Andrew
Does anyone know where Ordhill is or was? My Parloc program can't identify it - the 1841 census included Ordhill residents - is it a suburb or Avoch? Miranda White Rock, BC

Hello Listers. Want to toss in my McLachlan in with the recent McLennan discussions. According to the death record for Janet McLachlan, her parents were Kenneth McLauchlan, Ship Captain and Margaret Dawson. Janet was born ca 1807 and died in 1883. On various census returns, Janet was listed as being from Lochbroom, Ullapool and Red Castle. I do realize that McLauchlan and McLachlan are not McLennan. but I didn't want to leave this stone unturned. Anna in Spokane
Hello Marilyn, The MacLennan's in my posting were living the eastern side of Ross-shire but were born in the Aultbea area which I think is in the western part. (So far I am not very well acquainted with the location of towns and parishes.) Your story about the Red Castle was of interest because there are MacKenzie MacLennan marriages in our tree and the area around Inverness was MacKenzie territory. Happy Hunting, Jean
Hello Marilyn, Thanks for your recommendation to the Ontario Genealogy Society for books on the MacLennan's. I have only read the one written by the former Chief of the Clan RONALD MACLENNAN which only deals with Scotland and is held in the LDS Library. My Aunt had a copy of this. My MacLennan's originally settled mainly in Perth County Ontario but their descendants are now scattered - some in the London area and others in western Canada. My Catherine MacLennan was the daughter of Alexander MacLennan and Mary Macauley of Blarnabee, Strathconon. She married Duncan MacLennan 23 Feb. 1824 at Kilmuir, Black Isle. Jean British Columbia

I am impressed with the response I received to my request for information about the BLACK ISLE! What a helpful group you have. Thanks especially to MARK who sent me a detailed description of the area with some interesting information about the agricultural show held there every year. To DAVID for the photo of the Bridge to BLACK ISLE and to RICHARD for the map of the parishes of EASTERN ROSS-SHIRE which is much more detailed than the one I obtained from ANESFHS. Also to MAUREEN for her description and to Peter for his humorous comments. ANN asked for family details so see below. I have just started research on the MacLennan side of my family that came to Canada in the late 1840's or early 1850's from the Black Isle area. My G Grandfather ALEXANDER MACLENNAN and two of his brothers MURDOCH and DUNCAN left Scotland and settled in Ontario Canada. They were the sons of DUNCAN b.1781 d. Urray 1869 and CATHERINE MACLENNAN b.1805 d.URRAY 1862. Several siblings remained in Scotland including RODERICK, DONALD, GEORGE, JOHN and ANN. The information above came to me from research done by my Aunt now deceased who had for many years been corresponding with RONALD the former Chief of the MACLENNAN CLAN. On a visit this summer to Ontario, I had the opportunity to read their letters and make a copy of the Family Tree that he had sent to her. Now I have the task of finding the parish records etc. to support their work. Some of the dates do not correspond to what I have found on the IGI and I have not yet looked on the SCOTLAND PEOPLE site. Thanks for all the help, Jean (MacLennan) Levins British Columbia, Canada
Apologies! It wasn't meant to come across the way it evidently did. I have however several times come across people trying to use these same place names (on Wikipedia, as it happens) in sentences without their articles (the), but hadn't come across someone trying to use both sets (Black Isle and several firths) together without... I was just trying to be helpful and humorous but it evidently sounded like I was being nasty. Should have added some smileys :-( In fact, looking back, I did use *one*! Oh well, can't win.............. My great great grandmother, Catherine McKay was (supposedly) born in Red Castle located on the Black Isle, north of Inverness, near town of Milton. We visited the Castle in 1989 and even though had not been used since WWII was still fun to see and rather intact. Later, the roof was taken off and it is not nearly demolished. On the front of the Castle was a box with big initials...McK...referred to long-time owners, McKenzies instead of our McKay! Marilyn Cameron Stinson

Jean, The Black Isle is a headland which sticks out of the eastern end of Ross-shire into the Moray firth. Although not an island it is surrounded on all 4 side by water. On three sides it has The Beauly Firth (the name given to the Moray Firth once it goes inland from Inverness), The Moray Firth out to the Sutors (a small range of hills) at Cromarty and then it has The Cromarty Firth which comes all the way into Dingwall. On the 4th side it is delineated by rivers. The River Conon divides Maryburgh, 1 mile outside Dingwall from Conon Bridge which is the first village on the Black Isle from the western side. Through at the other end there is the river between Beauly (in Inverness-shire) and Muir of Ord (in Ross-shire and on the Black Isle) just beside Tomich House which divides the 2 counties and also delineates the start of the Black Isle on the south-western side but I cannot remember the name of the river there. So Muir of Ord is on the Black Isle and every year it hosts The Black Isle Show, arguably the second most important agricultural show in Scotland on the first Thursday in August. It is second only to the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston and farmers come from all over Scotland and beyond to take part.
