Try this web site http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/sas/sas.asp?action=public& It is very interesting reading once you can use to 'f' being used instead of 's' in the earlier reports. Bill Kilcoy (IV6 7SF) is north of Redcastle, adjacent to the old Redcastle Station on the former railway line to Fortrose. In more modern terms it is close to the Tore roundabout where the A835 to Ulllapool leaves the A9. There's a Balnain near Drumnadrochit, in Inverness-shire, but that doesn't fit in with the other three, being nearly half-an-hour's drive away. We know there is a Balnain in Ross-shire as there are references to people being born there. At the present day there is a Balnain Farm House (IV7 8EE) between Brahan and Maryburgh, about 5 miles from Kilcoy. Maybe this is the location? Listers: Here's a challenge: I am looking for the MARRIAGE RECORDS of these people: 1. JOHN MACKENZIE ("butcher in Kilcoy") and ISOBEL STEWART and their son: 2. WILLIAM MACKENZIE (b. 1 APR 1770) and FLORA MACMILLAN According to the OPR (Office of Public Records) in Urray, Scotland, " William was born to John McKenzie and Isobel Stewart in Balnain. He was their third child and was baptized on 2 April 1770 in the presence of the Congregation." Any help gratefully appreciated. Bill Dorgan URRAY and KILEARNAN are both parishes in the County of ROSS and CROMARTY in what is known as the BLACK ISLE. They are on the border of INVERNESS SHIRE on the east side of Scotland on BEAULY FIRTH. Someone else may be able to tell you about BALNAIN and KILCOY. They may be villages or farms where your family lived. I am presently working on research in the same area in the 1800's and have seen many MACKENZIE's on the URRAY census. If you go to the Family Search .org website and then to their Library Catalogue you will find information about URRAY and KILLEARNAN Parish Church records, census etc. Hope this is some help. I am trying to verify the children of Donlad McKay & Isabella Fraser married c 1830. I have their family as: Jamesina, Isabel, John, Jessie, Janet, Margaret Ann, Catherine, Duncan & James. If anyone has access to 1841 & 1851 census records perhaps you could check for me as it is a little hard in the Antipodes. I am wondering if Janet & Jessie could be the same person as I understood that Jessie could be a nickname for Janet. Many thanks, Wnedy, Perth, Aus
Dear Ann, I read your posting with interest. I am not sure if there is any connection with the ROSS family you are looking for but I thought I could post what little I know about mine from the same area of Kincardine. I have an Angus MacKenzie (1791-1865) of Stewartfield, a small farm on the eastern outskirts of Stornoway, who was a son of John MacKenzie and Margaret Ross, and was born in Kincardine Parish, near the town of Bonar Bridge. He was married to CATHERINE ROSS (1796-1869) , daughter of Donald Ross , an Army Pensioner, and Jessie Ross, from that same area. They had six children: Margaret, George and Donald, Peter, Helen and Mary. It would be great to find a connection in all of this. Janet
Hello i wonder has anyone come across a William and Catherine Ross they had a daughter Margaret born Kincardine about 1830 and died Bogbain 1890 she married John Mackenzie in 1856 Kincardine. Any help would be great Thank you Ann Roots
Hi Gordon & List Thank you for your help in the past re my Helen McCulloch. I have unfortunately misplaced all info re parents etc. I am wondering Gordon whether she is related to William McCulloch. Helen born in Ross-Shire arrived in Australia in 1854 alone at the age of 30. She would have been born around 1824. Don't know whether her family were still alive or not as she was one of the assisted passengers from Scotland. Hello list: I just joined this list and hope it is the correct one as I don't have any idea where my gggrandfather lived on the Isle of Lewis. I have Donald MACDONALD b. abt. 1803, Lewis, Scotland He married Euphemia MORRISON b. 1810 Lewis, Scotland. They came to Nova Scotia, Canada in 1828. It states on her headstone that she came with her parents so I guess they weren't married at the time. They settled at Estmere in Cape Breton. I would sure like to find a long lost cousin in Scotland. I look forward to hearing from you. Evelyn in very wet Cape Breton.
I have a William McCulloch who married Ann Duff and daughter Christina McCulloch from the same general area. Christina McCulloch was born in 1779. I would be interested in anything you found. Researching the families of Duncan McKay of Balguneerie farm, North Kessock, married Catherine Matheson c 1809. Information has been gathered from the head stones at Killearnan Church Yard. Descendants still farm at Balguneerie. I am hoping to make contact with Farquhar Mitchell who I believe has done extensive research on this tree. I am descended from their grand daughter Catherine McKay who married Angus McBean in 1864. My cousins & I are organising a family reunion of thses clans in Inverness in July 2007. Would be pleased to hear of any connections, Many thanks, Wendy (McBain) Brindle, Perth Australia wendy@accommodation-perthairport.com
Hello Tina, Thank you for looking. I don't know about the other suggestions (I'll have to do some followup) but the last one with wife Margaret and sister Christina are correct. I received a reply earlier from Hilary so went back to Scotlands People and found the marriage for Alexander and Margaret (m/s MacDonald) in Dingwall in 1863. Alexander and older children of this family were born in Lochbroom, and the younger ones starting with my great grandfather Duncan were born in Contin, although none of them are on the Contin OPR film. As adults they seem to be confused as to their ages. Christina should have been about 50-51 really.
