Hi, Barbara, I wonder if your Mackenzies are related to mine? I have Kenneth MACKENZIE (1), m. Elizabeth MCGREGOR (no dates/places) Roderick MACKENZIE (2) b. ?1810,m. 1848 (parish of Kilmuir Easter) Mary ROSS d. 1865, Capplich, Rosskeen Alexander MACKENZIE (3) b.?1853, Alness, m. 1881,Saltburn, Elizabeth/Betsy MCCULLOCH, d. 1930 and so on down to me, generation 6. Just to confuse matters, Eliz/Betsy McCulloch's parents were Thomas MCCULLOCH and Isabella/Bella MACKENZIE, she b. 1817/18 at Alness. I have no further information going back on either of these branches. I haven't found anything on the IGI, Scots Origins or even at New Register House itself. I think maybe my lot were Free Church of Scotland. I think I will have to visit the area some time to get any further back!! I hope we can make a connection. I have several ancestors who lived in and around Portmahomack in the first half of the 19th century. Has anyone come across any burial or MI records for churchyards in Portmahomack? Any help on existing records would be very much appreciated. Mary.

Hallo everyone, from a new list member, I have just joined this list as I found that my 4xGreat Grandparents came from Ross and Cromarty. They were Alexander Mackenzie and Isobel Allan and lived in the Tain area at the beginning of the 19th century. Their first five children were born at Tain and were James b. 1808, Ann b. 1810, Margaret b. 1814, George b. 1816 and Elizabeth (Betsy) b. 1818. They then moved to Kilmuir Easter parish and lived at a place called Heathfield where Alexander was a shoemaker. They had two more children, Gustavus Aird b. 1822 and Isabella (Bell) b. 1824, who was my 3xGreat Grandmother. Some time between then and about 1840 the family moved to Aberdeen as I have found four of the family there on the 1881 census and three of them married in Aberdeen. If any of you have come across any of these MacKenzies or any Allan family I would be very pleased to hear from you. I have not found the marriage of Alexander and Isobel on the IGI or at Scots Origins (or their births as far as I can tell - there seem to be several Alexander MacKenzies around there of suitable age) so appear to have hit a brick wall at the moment. Any clues or suggestions greatly appreciated. Barbara King Cambridge UK
My thanks to everyone who responded with the names of places to search for my "old book." Susan
I perhaps should have given more info on my Alexander Forbes ancestor. He is documented from Sept 17, 1777 in New York onward. Discharged from the 38th Foot there in Oct 1783 and migrated with loyalists and disbanded soldiers to Port Roseway (Shelburne) NS and received a land grant there in 1785. Married Phebe DENNIS in NS in 1790 and had 11 children. Have genealogy of life and family descendents in Nova Scotia, Canada. I am a 3rd Ggranddaughter. Family legend says he was born a Highlander, in ROC, "in a place surrounded by the sea on two sides, and left/ran away in late teens and enlisted after his mother died". That is about all I know of his birthplace and early life. He had good penmanship, and on only one document apparently signed FORBAS (? error). He was resourceful, and acquired several grants over the years and was a skilled seaman, and he and his sons were seamen, carpenters, and merchants. Alexander was never known to have returned to Scotland after going to NS. What I am missing is previous to NY in Sept 1777. Do not know how he came to join the Reg there, and birth family not substantiated, though thought in the 1970's to be John Forbes and Jean Thompson of Cromarty. The Forbes/Urquhart family names are all repeated in his children, that is why I am inclined to be interested in this family's timeline. Thanks to all who took time to share info with me. Thought you might enjoy the story. I know there are many strays whose records are lost, but sometimes you just never know who has the info you need to connect. Carol Vater [email protected]
Hello listers: Looking for an ancestor's whereabouts between 1755 and 1777. Would anyone have the census for any of 1755-1777 time frame? Looking for a FORBES family: Thomas and Jannet/Janet (Urquhart) FORBES m. Nov 29, 1751 in Resolis, ROC Four children all christened in Resolis: Alexander 1753 Isobel 1755 Mary 1757 Thomas 1760 Need to find when the mother died, and what happened to this Alexander - did he marry, have children, join a regiment, run away? When is the last mention of him? Appreciate any help with this blank. Carol Vater [email protected]
Hi, I would like to know how I would go about finding out if someone living in Stornoway received Poor Relief? Was it available and would there be an application that had to be filled out to obtain it? If so, what information would it contain? My Gr.Gr.Grandmother, Catherine ROSS, is listed on the 1851,1861 and 1871 Census for Stornoway as being the widow of a Seaman and a pauper. Regards, Marion B.C., Canada [email protected]
abebooks is a great site. If you do not find what you are looking for there, you can try the Out-of-print section at Barnes and Noble which is another good source of hard to find books. You will find it at www.bn.com Lilian Campbell
I am looking for a for a book published in Scotland in 1935. Would anyone have addresses of places that I could contact that may be able to locate out of print books? Thanks, Susan
Try this one. I don't know whether this is the best place for books specialising in Scotland, but I've used the web site below to buy out of print books off-line, with great success. It links numerous 'used' bookstores, including several dealers in antiquarian books. Everything I've looked for I've found, at prices that range from the reasonable to the ridiculous. Books have always arrived quickly in good order, though I guess that would depend on the individual seller. The search system was easy to use. www.abebooks.com Jim Wright Lougheed, AB From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 11:25 AM Subject: [RossGen] LOOKING FOR AN OLD BOOK > I am looking for a for a book published in Scotland in 1935. Hi Jim: I picked up my antena to the name FORBES. My ancestor Alexander Forbes, b.abt.1755, came from the Highlands, ROC, prob Cromarty/Nigg area. Still to be proved. Which Forbes family are you researching? Have you been to the Forbes castle website? You may get something on your topic by contacting Lord Forbes, I found him most amiable. Not to say he knows genealogy to help you, but that they have a bed and breakfast and say you can "explore Whiskey Trails...", so might have some info re your whiskey makers? Then again, it may be just a name of a place and not related. Check out their site at: http://www.castle-forbes.demon.co.uk/accom.htm Carol Vater [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Wright and Rona Drennan" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: February 19, 2001 22:33 Subject: Re: [RossGen] Ferintosh > Many thanks for those who replied re: the location of Ferintosh. Many thanks for those who replied re: the location of Ferintosh. I now have a general idea where it is, though I haven't found a map with a specific location, yet. It appears I jumped the gun a little with the question. A web search turned up quite a lot of information about Ferintosh, (but no precise location). Ferintosh was the site of the 18th century whiskey manufacturing works of the Forbes of Culloden. My ancestors lived there at the height of the whiskey production, it would appear. Whether that is a significant detail or not, I have yet to find out. However the web search did turn up an unexpected cousin, so it's possible I may find out more soon. Jim
I'm new to the list. I'm looking for the location of 'Ferintosh', which is apparently in Ross-shire. If anyone knows where it is or has any information about it, I'd be interested in hearing from them. I've skimmed the archives for a few months back, but didn't notice anything. My large map of Scotland, and the UK map site didn't turn up anything either. Thanks in advance Jim

You can access the 1891 census at http://www.origins.net/GRO/ for a fee. That is the only way on the Internet. Good luck. My long e-mail did not get sent, I understand. Just do a search for "Lochcarron" and it will take you to the website. There are maps that you can zoom in on and you will find Slumbay between Lochcarron and Strome. Lilian
