    1. [RossGen] MATHESON/MATHISON/MATHIESON
    2. Ken Mathieson
    3. Hi all, It's time I posted my "brick-wall" again: My GGGGF were Kenneth MATHESON/MATHISON/MATHIESON & GGGGM Christian MUNRO. I have no information on their births or marriage, but they had a lawful son Alexander b 29 Aug 1794 in Balintraid (near Invergordon) in Kilmuir Easter Parish. The next traces are my GGGF William b Glasgow High Parish 25 May 1804, Isabella Rutherford Mathieson b Glasgow High 24 Aug 1807, Mary Ann b Glasgow High 10 Oct 1809 and Robert b Lanark 27 May 1814. There was also a son James b abt 1802-1803 but not registered in Scotland. I suspect Kenneth was in the Army between 1794 and 1804, and was definitely in the Inverness-shire Militia between 1804 and 1810, so perhaps James was born elsewhere in, or outwith, the UK if Kenneth was in fact in the Army pre-1804. His occupations are given as shoemaker (1794 & 1804), militia soldier (1807 & 1809), and by 1814 he was working as a cotton teaser in the mills at New Lanark. I have no firm info on dates or place of death. If anyone has any data on these people I'd love to hear from them. Regards, Ken Mathieson, Uddingston, Lanarkshire

    3. FAO PAUL STRETTON Hi Paul Looking up maps, I don't see how anyone would live at Resolis and work at Balcherry (too far apart?). If you want to see where the places are use www.multimap.com Resolis and Balcherry are marked but Braelangwell (Lodge) is not. To see where it is, search for Wester Gruinards and Braelangwell is just due north across the river on the north side of the road. Presumably your ancestors would be married from the home of the wife's parents. Balcherry is in the middle of farming country so presumably the work would be farm- or estate-based. Hope this helps Ann Cook NW Sutherland

    3. Well, please don't take this as necessarily correct, but it does look suspiciously like the Gaelic spelling of MacLeod on the female side - which I THINK is Nicleoid - I've probably missed an 'h' somewhere, but I'm sure someone out there will know what it should be! 1. [RossGen] Lookups in Rosskeen Parish census
    2. I was wondering if anyone would be able to do lookups in any of the ROSSKEEN PARISH CENSUS from 1841-71. The village is SALTBURN. I am specifically looking for: 1) the family of DONALD (tailor) and MARGARET MUNRO 1841-1861. Perhaps MARGARET in 1871. I believe there are 2 sons, John and Donald...perhaps more children also. I have been unable to find information on DONALD and MARGARET beyond his profession and that he was dead by 1860. 2) Their son DONALD b1825 with his wife ANN and family in 1861-71 census. Thank you, Susan

Duncan ban MacLennan s/o Ewen MacLennan of Inchchro born1717Kintail.dKintail 1809.Duncan married Catherine MacLennan born 1722 Kintail d1813 d/o Roderick MacLennan. They had eight children .EWEN---DONALD---ALEXANDER---RODERICK----JOHN ANN ---MARY----CATHERINE. We are descended from ALEXANDER who married Mary Macrae and had four children Ewen -Duncan-Donald and Janet/Jessie who married Duncan Macrae. Many of these families came to New Zealand however Janet /Jessie remained behind. You ask about the Finlayson connection. ALEXANDER FINLAYSON 78th Reg of foot was born in Lochalsh in 1777 toDonald Finlayson and Catherin? Alexander married Mary Murchison at Balmaccara in 1802. They had 10 children and followed Rev Norman McLeod to Nova Scotia in 1820.Theyoungest son Roderick married Catherine McLean and again emigrated to New Zealand in 1852 this time where they had 10 children. We have just had a Finlayson Reunion and published a book for the family.1200 at the Reunion. As we are in our late 70's we thought we had better do something before it got too late.It was a wonderful success, now I'm trying to master the computer. 1. [RossGen] Re: Monteath Volunteers or Ross & Cromarty Volunteers
    2. Don Munro
    3. Judy, I have a book, the Queen's own Highlanders, which is the official book on that regiment - ISBN 0 9508986-2-7. Of course, they are now the Highlanders, since the Gordons amalgamated with them. In the book, the only volunteers mentioned are the rifle volunteers and one of these is the Ross-shire Volunteers 1860-61 and consisted of the following companies - 1st Invergordon; 2nd Dingwall, 3rd Avoch ; 4th Knockbain. All of these were formed in 1860 and in 1861 we had the 5th & 6th Alness Company. In 1861, the 6 original companies were incorporated in the 1st Administrative Batallion, Ross-shirs Rifle Volunteers with its headquarters in Dingwall. In 1864 the whole batallion adopted the same uniform of red tunics and blue trousers, except for No 3 company which chose to wear the Mackenzie kilt. In 1866 & 1867 were added the 7th Evanton, 8th Moy and 9th Gairloch companies. In 1873 the Batallion came under the command of 55 Brigade Depot at Fort George. In 1875 the batallion adopted the new uniform of red doublet and Mackenzie tartan trews except for the 3, 7, 8, 9 Companies whic retained the kilt In 1880, the batallion was consolidated as the 1th Ross-shire (Ross Highland Rifle Volunteerswith its headquarters in Dingwall. After the army reforms of 1881, the Batallion became an integral part of the Seaforth Highlanders (Ross-shire Buffs, Duke of Albanys). I hope that is of some help to you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judy Meibusch" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2001 3:05 AM Subject: [RossGen] Monteath Volunteers > Does anyone know where I can find information on the 'Monteath" Volunteers or Ross & Cromarty Volunteers? > I have checked out the official British Army Site > Judy > > > ==== ROSSGEN Mailing List ==== > To remove your email address from this list, visit this url: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cheps/maillist.htm >

    3. Hi Everyone Last week I asked if someone could look in the 1851 census of Tain for me, I have come to the conclusion that I have been looking in the wrong town. So if anyone could look in the 1851 Fearn census for me I'd really appreciate it, looking for Donald, Janet, Alexander, Catherine, Marion, Helen, Mary and Joanna Gibson and Margaret[Gibson]Munro , all born in Sutherland. I'm not sure if Donald was born in Sutherland though, it is possible he was born in ROC. I have to thank those who did look in the Tain census for me, that was very helpful to finding my family in Fearn. Thanks Everyone Robin

    1. [RossGen] McKenzies and McIntoshs of Knockbain
    2. Ron McKenzie
    3. Dear List Members, I am looking for a family of McKenzies living in the Knockbain area at the turn of the 18th/19th century. Specifically,Donald McKenzie born about 1802 to parents Donald McKenzie and Jessie McIntosh, who were crofters at Knockbain. This information was obtained from death records . There are no entries that I can find in the OPR for the marriage of Donald and Jessie or for the birth of their son Donald. It is believed that there was at least one other child to this family, John, born 1812-13. Donald junior became a seaman working in the "Atalanta",an excise cutter in the Inverness area. He died as an Excise Pensioner in Inverness in 1865. He married Jessie Paterson from Grantown parish,R and C, in 1831. They produced the following family,Donald at Inverness 1831,Johanna at Kilmorack 1834,John at Kilmorack 1837,Peter at Urquhart 1839 and Isobella at Boleskin 1841. Jessie Paterson was the daughter of John Paterson, ship`s pilot, and Isobella McIntosh who had a large family all born in Grantown parish,Knockbain. She was born around 1805. The other son of Donald McKenzie (senior) and Jessie McIntosh was named John and was born 1812-13. His birth is also not listed in OPR`s. John trained as a ship`s carpenter and migrated to Australia in 1838 where he remained. If anyone has any information on the above family would you please contact me. Thank you Ron

    1. [RossGen] Gustavus
    2. Lilian Campbell
    3. The name Gustavus became popular in the counties in Northern Scotland after the first Lord Reay, and Munro of Foulis, mustered 2000 men in the area in 1626 and sent them to the continent where they fought with the forces of the King of Denmark and later with the forces of the Swedish King, Gustavus Adolphus. I understand that the Rev Gustavus Aird, a Free Church minister during the second half of the 19th century, had several elders in his congregation called Gustavus so it must have become very popular in that area.
