My gggrandparents were James HALL(1795-1864) and Isabella LAWRENCE (1799-1865) who moved from Limekilns in Fife to Rosskeen in Ross and Cromarty between 1836 and 1841. He was a shipowner and probably traded with Baltic ports as well as with Fife. They had a family of ten , and one of their sons had a family of fifteen. I still have a lot of work to do to follow all these lines. However, from the gravestone and surrounding markers there are refernces to: o Wilson HALL (1874-1937), his wife Catherine MURRAY (1884-1967) and their children John, Isa and Billy o Roderick CORBETT (1886-1974) and his wife Isabella H. HALL. I also know, courtesy of John MacLennan, that Catherine HALL (1833-?) married John HENDERSON in 1857. Any connections? Alan Cairnie Perth, Ontario
Many , many thanks to Donald MacLennan of Dingwall who has gone to a great deal of trouble to find, describe, and photograph the monument in Rosskeen graveyard which marks where my gggrandparents are buried. This has opened new avenues for me since it is now clear that the story I was told by my mother that the HALLs of Rosskeen had died out in the 19th century is not accurate. Hello Sue, Beauly (pronounced like Julie but with a B), is a small town just outside the city of Inverness, 2-3 miles to the west. According to a letter, my ggg grandfather was born "at Beauly in Rosshire." Is Beauly a place name/town? I am not familiar with the word. Dear Listers, Many thanks to Donald for sending me the 1891 census.Perhaps now I may get on the right track. It is not easy when you lose a couple of generations through the huge emmigration schemes that took their toll on so many. There was a Highland and Island emmigration scheme about 1830 that seemed a bit of a disaster to Australia and New Zealand somehow connected to a Dr Dunmore Lang where the ships were contaminated having come from Hong Kong ---both with typhus and tuberculosis. Has anyone any information on these schemes? once again many thanks especially to Donald MacLennan. Maureen Orewa Hibiscus Coast New Zealand.

Hi, I am planning a trip next summer to Ullapool - can someone tell me where the musuem is? I have discovered that some of my McKENZIE ancestors were from there. I found (in the 1851 census) Alexander (b. Urray, 1823, s/o John) and wfie Catherine (b. 1823, Ullapool, s/o John McKENZIE) with their 2 young children, his brother John, plus James MUNRO (listed as app. tailor-same as John, Alex. was also tailor). Alex. and brother and children moved to Ontario, CAN in 1857 and I have the history from there. I also have Alexander McDONALD (b. Glengarry, CAN abt 1811). I believe his father was from SCT but I have not been able to make the connection. Another ancestor Norman McLEOD was prob. born (abt 1757) in SCT, married and have several small children. Supposedly his wife died and he left for US with the children, where he remarried and I first find him in Ohio (Gallia cty). His dgt Mary Jane was b. abt 1795 in what became Gallia cty. I have no idea where he entered US. Someone told me his wife's name was Nancy and that they probably married in Greenbrier cty, VA (no source). Any suggestions as to where else in the area I should search? Thanks, Linda M., Hermosa Beach, CA, USA
Hello all, A few weeks ago I asked on this list for volunteer help to OCR a couple of typewritten documents, for placing as files on my website, here follows a report on the process and results: Two of this list's members, Flora MacDonald and Robin McLeod leapt in. I mailed them both photocoppies of the photocoppies sent to me by Kate Ferris on Lewis. The one document, "TANERA ISLAND", was delegated to Flora, it was her first attempt at OCRing, and luckily it was fairly crisp and clean. Flora did a great job, and the file is now on my website, follow the link at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coigach The second document, "COIGACH", was much more fuzzy and blotchy, and two people who had seen it thought it was beyond hope for OCRing. Robin came through though! I suspect she hand transcribed some sections, and she says she used her spellcheck as a tool to help eliminate some of the static. Others deserve credit of course, Willy Muir and Alexander MacLeod were the original authors, Ann Urquhart brought them into the museum at Ullapool, Greg Wighton in Tasmania though about to leave on holiday gave technical advice, and Kate Ferris with her husband David did proofreading. Probably others also deserve credit, and I hope I think of them all before hitting the "send" key! Both documents are fascinating reading, the Tanera one giving personal insights into late 19th century, early 20th, society of a small Highland community. The Coigach, or "Mitford manuscript", mostly deals with the late 18th century, it includes mention of the 11 Coigach familys who left on the Hector in 1773. Thought you might enjoy the following genesis of a webfile, Thanks again everyone! Donald. One of the pages had been missed in the original photocopying, Kate contacted Ann, who coppied and mailed it to her. The process of getting that one page onto the web is interesting; 1) Kate phoned Ann in Ullapool. 2) Ann Searched for the page, photocoppied it, and postal mailed to Kate. 3) Kate scanned and emailed me the page. 4) I then emailed that file to Greg Wighton in Tasmania, for his advice and possible help (Greg has OCRed stuff for me in the past, but because of holidays could only give overview and tech advice this time.) 5) Greg could not get his program to read the file. So he printed out the jpg file, scanned it, then OCRed it. 6) Greg emailed me the ascii file. 7) I printed out the ascii file. 8) I then photocoppied the printout, along with photocoppies of the rest of the photocoppies sent by Kate. 9) All the photocoppies were then included it in a mailout to Flora MacDonald in Ontario. 10) Flora scanned and OCRed the pages, including the printout. 11) Flora then emailed me the result as an ascii file. 12) I then made an HTML file of the ascii, and uploaded it to Rootsweb Freepages. 13) After the several people involved including Kate and her husband David looked it over I made several edits.

Hi to the list, This is addressed to those of you who live in or have visited the Inverness area. We are going to be in the area for several days in June and would loke to know if anyone has any specific recommendations for places to stay and things to see. My ancestors were from the Rosemarkie area, so we will see that, and of course, Loch Ness and Culloden. I've been doing reading and web-surfing, but would love to hear something first hand. Thanks so much to you all. Francie Collins

Hello Listers! I don't see many queries on the List, so I assume you all know your family trees going way, way back - SO, here is my query to you all. I have a Murdoch MacLeod, born about 1772 (from death certificate age given) and who died 11 February 1855 (wasn't I lucky?). He was married to a Margaret Munro. His parents were given as Roderick MacLeod and Catherine MacLeod (her maiden name also), but now I am stuck. Did they come from Strathpolly or did they come down from Assynt - or where? I know, I am talking about the mid-late 18th century, but has anyone found a similar problem and solved it? I can trace downwards on my MacLeod side, through Dornie, Achnahaird, Achiltibuie and from there, my grandfather went over to the east coast and Brora in the early 1900s. Would be very happy to hear from other MacLeod or Munro hunters in the Coigeach/Assynt areas who have similar families. Kate (now) on the Isle of Lewis Kate and David Ferris [email protected]
