Hi, Could someone please look up census results for any of the years after the following marriage? Alexander McLEOD (or MacLEOD), married Alexanderina STEWART on 23 Jun 1863, in Kincardine, Ross and Cromarty. So far, I have found 4 children - Murdo b.21.3.1864 Kincardine Donald b.13.1.1866 Kincardine Mary b.17.1.1868 Kincardine Robert b.25.2.1874 Kincardine. Mary is the person marrying into our family - she married in 1893 and moved to Cromarty. I am hoping to find Alexander and Alexanderina's places of birth from the censuses, and any other children they may have had. Any help someone can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Suzanne Irvine Brisbane, Aust.

Hiya Suzanne, From Gordon's extract of the 1881 census that gives her birthplace as Lochbroom, and your note that Alexanderina's maiden surname was Stewart, I took a look at the Coigach censuses,... no luck there, she must be from some other part of the Parish. The name "Robert" was found with several Coigach Stewart families, very rare with other surnames in that area, and my guess is her son was named for her father or other relative,... seem to recall a family with Robert Stewart as Head at Ullapool... For what its worth, the Stewarts in Coigach are said to descend from four Stewart of Appin soldiers, who fled with their familys following Culloden, and found refuge among the poor people there. My website at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coigach now has all the 1841, '51, '61, and '71 censuses transcribed and annotated, with a good start on 1881 and 1891. Once those are complete I intend to add the area east of the Coigach peninsula, which some records refer to as part of Coigach, including Ullapool. All the best from a hot and muggy Niagara, Donald.

I am seeking help to find Roderick Morrison, shepherd, whose son John, cabinet maker, aged 23, married Martha Sawyers on 26 July 1865 at the Register Office, Sunderland, Co Durham, England. He said that his father was deceased. John and Martha were at 4 Barrington Street, Monkwearmouth Shore, in the 1881 Census. John's birthplace is given as Scotland. All ideas gratefully received. Anne ....Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused ....

I thought this might be of interest: >From baptismal records of Logie Easter, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland 1788 "On Thursday the 17th July by 5 o'clock of the morning there was found by Donald McKensie Gardener at Scotsburn a male child laid on the threshold of the main door of the house of Scotsburn; immediately thereafter there was a minute search made among the unmarried women of this and Rosskeen parishes in order to discover the mother & a guinea of reward ordered and promised to any person that would give information that would lead to her discovery, but as all the trouble & pains that Elders & Midwives were at did not discover her, the session ordered him to be baptised on the 21st and gave him the name Nicholas and engaged David Munro's wife at Scotsburn to nurse him for a Guinea wages & a boll of meal a Quarter with payment for his necessary clothing." I can just imagine those elders and midwives! And why only the unmarried women?
Researching Alexander MacDonald in Tain and I've hit a wall. Wondering if anyone can tell me if I have an approx. year of death, 1917, would the information be available through Scots Origins and would a copy of the death certificate list the parents names? Thanks Martin Beveridge
Hello All, I have a Murdoch Mackenzie (crofter) who married a Williamina MacLeod in 1837. Their daughter Williamina Mackenzie was a domestic servant in Badralloch and married John Matheson (fisherman) Tanera Mor in the Summer Isles 1865. At that time, both Murdoch Mackenzie and Williamina Macleod were still alive, but I've been unable to identify their death records on Origins - so far! Anyone who might feel they have a link? I'd be very pleased to hear from you. Kate Kate and David Ferris [email protected]
I too am interested in the archives for Ross and Cromaty. I only subscribed on 18 July but if someone could post a reply to Kate Ferris' query it would save me searching in the same way. Thanks -- Margaret Roberts, Carlisle, UK

Kate, Margaret and Others To find the archives for this list, go http://www.rootsweb. Scroll down until you come to Mailing Lists, click on Index. Scroll down to International and click on Scotland. Click on Rossgen. At the bottom of the next page you will see Search and Browse archives. Select whatever you want. A word of warning, no messages posted to the lists since the end of June were available through the archives as of last week. The have been saved, and will be available, but there is a large hardware problem that was being difficult to fix. As I understand it, you should be able to view the messages prior to that date. I give you these instructions rather than the URL, as they apply to information for all mail lists. Marleen Van Horne
Hello - is there anyone out there? I looked at Rootsweb for Ross and Cromarty as I wanted to search the archives - BUT I could not find the List named as one which I could search on. Has anyone got an explanation for this - was I in the wrong place entirely - or am I alone?? Kate Kate and David Ferris [email protected]
