Dear Listers, I have been delighted with the response that I got about my Alexander McLennan and his two children Duncan and Mary. In the old letters that I have from his granddaughter-she had no idea who Alexander,s third wife was-only the names of his children. Alexander was first married to Catherine Macrae [daughter of Farquhar of Torlyish] and had Ewen 1806,Donald 1807 and Duncan1808 then he married Mary Macrae[daughter of Alexander Macrae -[Alister Donn]]and had Janet[ Jessie1815]and when Mary died he had two more children -namely Duncan and Mary and noone has had an idea who their mother was---- only that they were taken to America by relatives when quite young. Strangely enough the saga carried on when my grandpa contacted some descendants in America1924 and they did not know either whoAlexander married for the third time as they were too young to remember when they were taken out there.Slowly we are working our way through all the names and places with th! e help of Ross and Cromarty and Inverness rootsweb-just the ticket and wonderful help from you all. One day I will succeed.Ithink our Alexander must have moved around a fair bit in later life. When he married Mary he was tenant to Roderick MacLennan Kilaoglan Kintail.and he had a sister Ann Mclennan. Also a brother Ewen -Donald[tailor]-Roderick married Charlotte Stewart---John of Glenelg married sister of Ewen[Lienassie]---Mary marriedMurdoch MacLennan -and a Catherine. I have no idea when Alexander died or where. Many thanks to you all. Maureen Finlayson. Orewa New Zealand life.
Hi List I would just like to introduce myself, my name is Anna and I am in Canada. I was born in Scotland (many moons ago) in Ayrshire my grandmother came from Rosskeen and my great grandparents from Avoch and Cromarty. What I have found out my names (Sutherland and Hogg) they are just like Smith. Hope to get some e-mails flowing. Hello, Kiwicatz52!! Dear Jan, I found your query when digging in the archives, and I haven't seen a reply; if there has been you can easily delete me! Yes, Melvaig is about 10 miles north west of Gairloch, North Erradale about 5, on the same road. My mother came from Big Sand, about 2 miles south of North Erradale.I hope all these Norths and Wests don't confuse you! The nearest churchyard would probably have been in Gairloch. I have a copy of the pre1855 MI's for here (although there are some up to the1870's), and although the area heaves with MacKenzies there are not many MI's. The inscriptions tell their own story- (merchant) - (blacksmith) - (farmer) - (minister) etc. The ordinary folk in many cases could not afford a permanent memorial to their departed and now no traces remain. Hope this may help. Regards, Fraser MacKenzie.
Hello Maureen, I have one tiny reference to the name, MacCALMAN. My GG Grandfather, Ewen MacMILLAN was born 28 Feb. 1824, in Lochcarron, the son of Archibald MacMILLAN & Mary MURCHISON. This couple also had three daughters born in Applecross between 1814-1820. The interesting thing is that when Archibald died in 1855, it was stated that he was the widower of Mary MacCALMAN! I have been advised that the names MacCalman and Murchison are interchangeable. Whether or not this is really so, I cannot be sure. Perhaps someone on this list knows something about this. Lyndall Canberra, Australia. ................................................. Dear Listers, My wonderful help Elizabeth has sent me what could be my elusive Alexander McLennan and he and Margaret Mc Calman had a son Duncan January 23 1838 at Corry and a daughter named Mary on August24 1840 at Maligin. Elizabeth found these records on OPR Applecross. Has anyone heard the name McCalman for a surname or a place called Maligin please. I would be very grateful.I am still amazed at the great help people are prepared to give on these rootsweb sites. Maureen Orewa New Zealand
Maureen, There is a district named Alligin just across Loch Torridon on the north side of the Applecross peninsula. A serious shortage of Mccalmans and Maccalmans in the Highland Telephone Directory, although I seem to recall a Folk Group called The Macalmans. Fraser MacKenzie.
Searching for information about Anne Macrae d/o Florence and Rory Macrae 1802 Farquhar d/o Florence and Rory ??? Male child Anne married John Macrae and they were in Nova Scotia in 1840s. They were from the Applecross area listed as Miltown. Would appreciate any information? Mary in Oregon
Hi -I am researchign the family of John McRae and Catherine Urquhart-as they were my great grandmother's parents. The children of John McRae and Catherine Urquhart were: Marion MacRae born 1836 in Tarbat, Harris-she married William Dingwall of Gairloch; William MacRae born January 2,1838; Anne MacRae born March 16,1843; John MacRae born July 2,1848; Donald MacRae born November 28, 1851. Marion MacRae is my great great grandmother. I know nothing of any of the other MacRae siblings. I received information from Edinburgh archives shows the following on Marion's death record - she was the daughter of John McRae and Catherine Urquhart in Fort Augustus?? It also says her brothers were as follows: William MacRae-single labourer in Fort August??; John-single-labourer in Nairn ;Daniel in McLellan St.Southside; Donald married with no family - warden in Larbert Asylum; alexander -married with 7 children - shepherd in Nairn. Anne -married with 7 children to Daniel Poushey in Cape Breton; Flora single -cook in Crown Circus Glasgow; Mary -single servant in Wilson St.Hillhead; Christina -single servant in Fort Augustus; Helen - single nurse in Bridge of Allan. I don't know where these names came from as some of them weren't from my original receipt of information. I included the names of the areas where they were from or listed in as residing there. Does any of this look familiar to anyone? I would love to trace their families. I do know that Anne MacRae -the sister of Marion (My great grandmother) married Mr. Poushey and came to Sydney, Nova Scotia with her family and that is where my grandfather came to stay when he first arrived here in Sydney. Hopes this helps someone in their search for information -look forward to hearing from someone also. Valerie Dingwall Barrett - Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada. Hi all, I need to find a replacement host for the Ross and Cromarty ScotlandGenWeb website (http://www.rootsweb.com/~sctroc/). The new host should know how to make a web page (or be willing to learn), how to ftp to the internet, and have interest in helping others learn more about Ross and Cromarty. Time commitment is minimal - friendliness is important. If you are interested, please email me directly. -- Best Wishes, Carol Hepburn [email protected] Phoenix, AZ USA
I notice a yawning gap between 1715 and 1786, and between 1792 and 1803, in the IGI marriages / proclamations for Logie-Easter. Is this true of the GRO records as well? i.e. were the marriages (and b&bs?) in these years never recorded or were the records lost some time in the past? I'd be grateful to know before I go on an expensive, and doomed, search on Scots Origins! Sara (Cardiff)
Hello Listers - I'm back again after a year or so. I'm still looking for James THOMSON (from the Tain area) I have found him in the 1881 Census in St Lambert, nr Montreal, Quebec, Canada which Indicates that he was born in 1825. Family legend holds they come from Tain or near-by. I have found a likely family for him from the IGI and wonder if Anyone is related to them, or has some knowledge of them. Parents: Hamilton THOMSON Ann THOMSON nee CARR/CAW siblings: Marion THOMSON ch. 1819 Edderton Ann THOMSON ch.1821 Tain James THOMSON b.1824 Fearn Mary THOMSON ch.1826 Logie Easter Alexander THOMSON ch. 1828 Rosskean and Janet THOMSON ch. 1831 Rosskean. Has anyone come across their entries in the Parish registers or found them in a census? I was unable to find them in the 1841 census Index held by my FHS, but I'm not sure that is complete. Looking forward to hearing from you. Janet Packer (nee Thomson)
I am interested in hearing from anyone who recognises Jessie MURRAY born about 1833, in Stornoway. On the 1881 census she is in Salford as Jessie SMITH with children George 17, Margaret 14 and Jessie 7. There should also be Isabella aged about 12. Family legend says that she and her husband, George, were forced to move from the island in disgrace. They married (in England?) and changed their name to SMITH. The legend also has Jessie as a parlour maid and George as the son of the house. The legend has more details but it would be helpful if I could confirm the existence of Jessie in Stornoway first. Does anyone recognise her? Thanks -- Margaret Roberts, Carlisle, UK
Like to invite the list members for a visit to my Scottish Website. http://www.geocities.com/snrw1/one.html Thanking you. Peter
Hi Listers, My gt.gt. grandmother was Mary MORRISON (B. Stornoway 1843). She married Peter BELL in 1864. Their children (8) were born in Iverkip (Gourock) Her parents were Kenneth Morrison and Annabella McAULAY(SP. on Mary's death cert.) Kenneth and Annabella were married in Stornoway Nov 1833. They had 4 other children. Would like to find Kenneth and Annabella's birth and parents. Anyone see any connections? Regards Andrea
In my previous posting there was an error: Catherine MACIVER was the dau of John MacIver and Isabella MACLEOD (not Ross) Sorry for the mistake. Thanks for reading this. Win MacKenzie
