    1. [RossGen] MacLeod - Birth Extract
    2. ALLANA MCLEAN
    3. Hi Everyone: I have an "Extract of an entry in a Register of Births" which I ordered through Origins (thought it was a relative) that does not belong to my family. The following is the data on the certificate. If anyone recognizes this person they are welcome to contact me and I will send it on. Kate MacLeod, born April 10, 1889, Achlochan, female, father - Roderick MacLeod, Crofter; mother Christy MacLeod, m.s. MacKenzie; they were married February 5, 1880, Coigach. Roderick signed with an "X", witness was Alex. Fraser, Registrar. Hope someone is looking for this "Kate" and she finds some relatives who will be pleased to find her. E-mail me at [email protected] if she belongs to you. Regards Allana McLean [email protected]

    1. [RossGen] THOMSON in Tain, Rosemarkie, Resolis, Rosskeen, Tarbat & Logie Wester
    2. Janet Packer
    3. Hello, I am trying to trace the ancestors of my Canadian THOMSONs. It is possible that my James THOMSON (b.1825) was descended from Hamilton THOMSON and Ann CARR/CAW. They moved around a bit and had children in various parishes in Easter Ross. In desperation I am trying to eliminate those families that are not connected! I have an index of heads of households in the 1841 census for Tain, Rosemarkie, Resolis, Rosskeen, Logie Wester and Tarbat. If you think that your THOMSON, THOMPSON or THOMASON anscestors would be mentioned, please contact me and I can check the index, and if you require, look up the full entry. TIA, Janet Packer (nee Thomson)

    2. Hello Sandra, can't help with the census, but the placename is almost certainly Braemore. As a gardener your Alexander could have worked at Braemore House, sometimes called Braemore Castle, built by Sir John Fowler in 1867. He was a consulting engineer and co-designed the Forth Bridge. Regards Fraser MacKenzie.

    1. [RossGen] Newsagents in Evanton
    2. Sharon Davage
    3. Hi, i'm new to the list and i'm hoping to find out a bit more about why my Great Grandfather, George William Davage (1890-?) who's family had lived for several generations in Sheffield, Yorkshire would give up his job as an insurance agent and move his family to Evanton where he either ran or owned a Newsagents. George married Beatrice Rose, also native to Sheffield in 1912 and my Grandfather was born in Eckington, Derby in 1914,leaving Scotland in the 1930's when he joined the marines. My Grandad only had one sister, Alice who remained in Scotland, marrying a local man ; Hector Macleod, not sure if his last name is correct but it was something similar to this.George William also stayed in Scotland until he died in the 1960's or early 70's, my father only ever met him the once! I would love to hear from anyone with information on shops in the Evanton area around the 1920's or later. Regards, Sharon, Portsmouth,Hants, UK

    3. I have been searching for a Macrae booklet which I saw at the Inverness Library. The genealogist ? McLoed had a copy which he said could not be copied. He told me it was from Nova Scotia and I would be able to find a copy there. I have not found anyone who knows anything about it. I have written to the Inverness Library and have had no response. Do any of you know about this booklet? My family Farquhar McRae May 18, 1816 Applecross This birthday was on his gravestone. We keep trying to connect him with Rory and Florence McDonald McRae from Miltown near Applecross. He came to NS with his sister Anne McRae who married John MacRae in Scotland. They are both buried in Man O' War cemetery Cape Breton. They were supposed to have arrived in NS c1840s His wife was Isabella Campbell d/o Alexander Campbell and Janet Urquhart and she was born at Lochbroom, Scotland April 13, 1813. The family went to NS c 1828. Would appreciate any clues. Mary in Oregon

Dear Listers, Ihave been fascinated with all the interest and replies that I have had over my McLennan and Macrae families-at last I seem to be sorting things out a bit. ;Duncan McLennan1717-1809 married Catherine McLennan1722-1823[dau of Roderick McLennan] They had [1] Anne McLennan who married Duncan Macrae[Donnachadh Og] [2] Ewen McLennan [3]Donald Mc Lennan[Tailor] married Jennet Macrae [4] ALEXANDER MCLENNAN married [1] Catherine Macrae dau of Farquhar Macrae of Torlysich 1806-[2]Mary MACRAE dau of Alexander Macrae[Don Tacksman of Auchtertyre and [3] we are not definite about her yet. Bits and pieces have come from everywhere. My original query about [FERNAIG] some months ago I think have been sorted out-my old letters said that my great aunt lived with her Aunt Ann at Fernaig after her mother died and apparently Ann and Duncan did live there for a while as their son Donald lived there at one time.. The other place I was looking for wasMaligin and I notice on my 1976 reprint of the Macrae book it mentions on page 210 that [Christopher Macrae lived at Malagan in the heights of Kintail] this is all very fascinating. Iwould appreciate any comments-perhaps this is the place I am looking for. Regards to all especially to John McLennan and Elizabeth of dulaig Maureen Orewa NewZealand

    2. John MacLennan
    3. Hello Maureen, Alexander MacLennan and Margaret McCalman had at least four of a family. 1 Donald b circa 1834 2 Duncan circa 1838 in Corry 3 Mary circa 1840 in Maligin (?) 4 Catherine circa 1843 all born in Applecross Parish. There is an Allt Coire Mhaileagain (Malegane (in 1543) in Glenshiel. However, since, all the family were born in Applecross, Maligin is almost certainly a miss-spelling of Alligin. Corry and Alligin are hamlets, separated by a few miles distance, on the north shore of Loch Torridon in Applecross Parish. Places can often be located via www.multimap.co.uk .

    3. Hello Well, where to begin! Rodel, Isle of Harris is part of the Outer Hebrides or Western Isles of Scotland. You have to cross a stretch of water called the Minch to get to the Outer Hebrides - and the stretch of Islands containing the Isle of Harris (which in reality is connected to the Isle of Lewis to the north). Have a look at an atlas and you will see the Islands group at the north west of Scotland. Tarbat is on the mainland of Scotland - and we Islanders consider anywhere on the mainland is far away! Seriously, lots of Islanders left the Islands for the mainland, so there's nothing odd about it. Islanders were pretty well travelled people through most centuries we are researching! Good luck with your McRae search. You might want to search the Internet for info on the Isle of Harris, as there is a researcher called Bill Lawson at Northtom Harris, who does professional research and can be reached via the Internet.
